Santner named New Zealand Test skipper for Zimbabwe Series
Latham sufferd the injury while fielding in a domestic T20 game in England, and hasn't been deemed fit enough to feature in the playing XI. But the left-handed top-order batter will continue to remain with the squad, with the hope that he regains full fitness ahead of the second Test match against the Chevrons.
Santner, who has 1066 runs and 74 wickets from his 30 Tests, assumes the role fresh off a T20I Tri-Series victory in Harare where the Black Caps remained undefeated in the group stage into the finals.
Rob Walter, New Zealand head coach, expressed his disappointment for Latham but backed Santner to do well.
"It's never great when you lose your captain (Tom Latham), who's a world-class opening batter and a great team man, but that said we're going to work really hard to have him available for the second Test," he said.
"We'll continue to assess and see whether a replacement player is necessary, but at this stage we are hopeful that he'll recover in time," he noted.
"Mitch (Santner) did a wonderful job with the T20 squad in this recent series. Whilst the format is different, he certainly has the respect of the players and will be supported by some highly experienced Test cricketers, so I trust that he's going to do a great job," Walter said.

Questions England must address ahead of Ashes in Australia
London: England need to seek answers ahead of the five-match Ashes series in Australia later this year. If they harbour aspirations of reaching the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final for the first time, then a positive result Down Under is crucial, as per the official website of the ICC. England showed plenty of good signs during their recent series with India, but still have some unanswered questions as they attempt to win back the Ashes from Australia for the first time since the start of 2018. England tried as many as six different fast bowlers across the five-match series against India, but they aren't all that much clearer about what their best pace line-up looks like. Whether Chris Woakes recovers from his shoulder ailment in time for the Ashes remains to be seen, while the ongoing fitness concerns for pace spearhead Jofra Archer are also sure to be monitored before the trip Down Under. England will also be hoping that Mark Wood will be fit to make the trip to Australia as his pace will surely be an asset, with the likes of Josh Tongue, Brydon Carse, and Gus Atkinson all in consideration for selection too. While there is no doubting the class of Joe Root, the England veteran is yet to register a Test century on Australian shores, and this is probably the only thing missing from his bulky resume as he tries to hunt down Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most hundreds in Test cricket. If Root can break his century duck this time in Australia and lead England to an Ashes victory, then it will surely go down as one of the right-hander's biggest achievements during his illustrious international career. Youngster Shoaib Bashir appears to be the front-runner to be England's first-choice spin option during the Ashes, providing he recovers from his finger injury, but the 20-year-old is yet to set the world on fire and may be targeted by Australia's batting group. England could turn to the experience of Jack Leach or provide Liam Dawson another opportunity after he got a taste of it against India, or will Rehan Ahmed make a surprise return and be included in the touring party? Crawley was England's leading run-scorer during the most recent Ashes series in 2023, but the tall opener was somewhat disappointing on his inaugural visit to Australia when he managed just 166 runs from three Tests across the 2021/2022 series. Australia's experienced pace attack will fancy their chances against Crawley and the right-hander will be under pressure to perform well and get the side off to a good start alongside fellow opener Ben Duckett. Jamie Smith has made a superb start to his fledgling international Test career, and the comparisons with Australian great Adam Gilchrist seem somewhat justified, given his Test batting average currently sits close to 50. It will be a step up in class for Smith taking on Australia away from home and the Aussies are sure to try and intimidate the talented 25-year-old in his first tour Down Under.

London: India's star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal heaped praise on Akash Deep following their crucial partnership in the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England at The Oval on Saturday. The duo added 107 runs for the third wicket on Day 3 in the series decider. This partnership was the 18th 100-run stand in this ongoing England tour, the most in a Test series in this century (since 2000), surpassing 17 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2003-04. The partnership between Jaiswal-Deep was a turning point in India's second innings as they lost KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan for low scores on Day 2. "He did what he could, and he was playing shots and defending very well. We were just having a talk in the middle about what we can do best in that situation because we wanted him to play as long as he can play. So, that will benefit us as well. So, I was just keeping thinking about how we can build this partnership as long as we can," Jaiswal told the media. Deep walked as a night watchman in the third session of the fifth and final Test on Day 2 and went on to make the most of a reprieve and score a gritty half-century. This was his maiden fifty in Test cricket. With his first fifty in the longest format, he became just the fourth Indian to score a Test fifty at No.4 in England in this century, joining the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Indian skipper Shubman Gill. On the other hand, Jaiswal delivered a batting masterclass and completed his second century of the ongoing series in 127 deliveries by pushing the ball for a single off Gus Atkinson. Jaiswal's innings ended after he played an upper cut straight to the third man fielder, placed for that particular shot, for 118 runs off 164 balls.
