Labuan Steps Up Promotion Ahead Of Borneo Flora Festival 2025
Labuan Corporation (LC) chief executive officer Mohd Sukuran Taib said preparations are progressing smoothly, with promotional activities rolled out through various platforms, including face-to-face engagements, social media, printed materials, and billboards.
'For the past two months, we have stepped up promotion by distributing leaflets, putting up posters, and hanging banners,' he told Bernama today.
'You can now see these materials displayed in almost every corner of the island, particularly in the town centre,' he said to Bernama today.
Mohd Sukuran said the Borneo Flora Festival 2025, organised by LC in collaboration with Putrajaya Corporation and the Department of Federal Territories (JWP), is expected to attract around 50,000 visitors over its five-day run from July 26 to 30 at the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex.
'We are targeting not only domestic visitors but also tourists from the Borneo region, including Kalimantan and Brunei. This is our flagship tourism event of the year, and we are optimistic about a strong turnout,' he said.
Mohd Sukuran added that the festival will showcase a wide variety of flower and plant species from across the country.
'Labuan Corporation is also taking the initiative to enhance the overall beauty and ambience of the Borneo Flora Festival by planting a total of 250,000 polybags of flowering plants, as part of its broader environmental and tourism enhancement strategy,' he said.
He also emphasised that the Borneo Flora Festival 2025 aims to position Labuan as a key tourism hub while creating economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs and plant growers.

Over 30,000 Sabah smallholders achieve MSPO certification by 2025
KOTA KINABALU: More than 30,000 smallholders in Sabah have achieved Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil certification across over 191,000 hectares as of April 2025. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor confirmed the certification rate now stands at 97.62%, ranking among the highest nationwide. 'This underscores collective progress and emphasises the importance of continued collaboration between government agencies, industry players, and smallholders to sustain and expand sustainable palm oil production,' he said. Hajiji stressed the crucial need for Malaysia to advance certification and traceability efforts to maintain international recognition and credibility. 'In Sabah, we are making progress where about 97 per cent of the planted area and over 92 per cent in Sarawak are now certified under the MSPO.' 'However, we must push toward 100 per cent inclusion, particularly for independent smallholders.' 'We are fully cognisant of the challenges the industry faces,' he stated in his speech delivered by Sabah Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe. The Sabah government has adopted the Jurisdictional Approach for Sustainable Palm Oil launched in 2015 to achieve full certification by 2030. 'This approach is more than administrative in nature,' Hajiji explained. 'It is also a governance mechanism that allows all players in the palm oil value chain to work together under a unified framework.' Sabah maintains its leadership with 1.48 million hectares under cultivation and annual output exceeding 4.2 million tonnes of crude palm oil. The state alongside Sarawak accounts for over 55% of Malaysia's total oil palm planted areas. Hajiji emphasised that this success resulted from decades of hard work and collaboration across the entire supply chain. 'It is a testament to our shared commitment to balance economic development with environmental stewardship and social progress,' he added. The palm oil industry sustains livelihoods for more than 300,000 Malaysians and supports over 85,000 smallholders directly and indirectly. Hajiji expressed confidence in the industry's continued growth through strategic investment and strong governance. – Bernama

KPKT Explores Formation Of Single Agency For Waste Management
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) is exploring the formation of a single agency to manage solid waste, e-waste, sewage and radioactive waste through optimised use of resources, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Minister Nga Kor Ming said the initiative was among the key strategies outlined in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), as part of a comprehensive effort to safeguard planetary health and achieve zero waste. 'This single agency will encompass the five key principles of waste management, namely collection, transportation, recovery, treatment and disposal. 'This effort is in line with the commitment to achieve zero waste, while promoting green economic growth, advancing social well-being and ensuring environmental sustainability, as outlined in the Circular Economy Blueprint for Solid Waste in Malaysia,' he said during a question-and-answer session. He said this in response to a question from Datuk Dr Richard Rapu @ Aman Begri (GPS-Betong) on the ministry's strategic measures to strengthen solid waste management governance, including aspects of the circular economy, green job creation and the adoption of innovative technologies. Responding to a supplementary question from Richard Rapu on the ministry's strategy to assist local authorities (PBTs) in tackling rising solid waste management costs, Nga said the government had allocated substantial funds for public cleaning under the 13MP. 'Almost every year, RM2 billion is allocated to states that have adopted Act 672. Selangor and Penang have now agreed in principle to adopt the same act, and assistance will be extended to their respective PBTs to ensure efficient solid waste management,' he said. Nga said under the 13MP, the government had set a target for 20 per cent of waste collection vehicles to be electric-powered by 2027, in line with the country's decarbonisation policy.

The joint declaration was adopted at the ASEAN Law Forum 2025 here, which was attended by representatives from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. In a joint statement, the ministers emphasised the importance of harmonising arbitration and mediation frameworks across ASEAN in alignment with international standards such as the Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards, the Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation, and the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration. 'A robust legal infrastructure for dispute resolution is essential for attracting investment, promoting trade, and strengthening economic growth in the region,' the statement read. The ministers recognised the need for greater collaboration among ASEAN nations and with international and regional partners, including knowledge-sharing platforms and capacity-building initiatives. These would target the upskilling of policymakers, legal professionals, and dispute resolution practitioners to meet the region's evolving needs in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). In a notable move, the joint statement also addressed the transformative role of technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in improving ADR mechanisms. The ministers supported the use of AI-powered platforms to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure evidence-based and impartial decision-making—while also underscoring the importance of responsible AI use, data privacy, and human oversight. 'We encourage the use of AI to streamline case management and facilitate equitable outcomes, while upholding transparency, impartiality, and the rule of law,' said the statement, which also reaffirmed the importance of inclusivity, accessibility, and public trust in legal processes.
