Though 75 games, McMahon is slashing .225/.311/.416 – all noticeably lower than the combined numbers of Toro and Gonzalez. Power is where McMahon makes up the difference. With 12 home runs and 25 RBIs, McMahon would become their best-hitting first baseman this season and the third-most home runs on the team. Advertisement McMahon is not just a slugger. He provides tremendous defense, especially at the hot corner, accumulating the second-most defensive runs saved among third basemen. Signed through 2027, McMahon will not come cheap, and prying players away from Colorado is never easy, but it is the insurance McMahon can provide that makes a deal worth considering. Third baseman Alex Bregman has a player option for the 2026 season that he is not expected to exercise. With Devers now gone, Boston will do their best to retain Bregman, but if the two-time All-Star elects to leave, having McMahon, a former All-Star in his own right, on the roster cushions the potential blow. The Red Sox deadline approach is unknown after the Devers trade. Will chief baseball officer Craig Breslow be aggressive or do just enough to keep the team afloat while preparing for a bigger free agency plan? For an organization currently in a transition period, acquiring McMahon might be the happy medium. With Jordan Romano being a massive disappointment and Jose Alvarado getting suspended for 80 games and the postseason, the Phillies need to make a move. Philadelphia would land All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase in exchange for a deal headlined by Brandon Marsh. The Phillies need bullpen help, and the Guardians could be sellers if things don't improve. With Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN naming the Phillies as a best fit for Clase, a trade isn't out of the question like it seemed after 2024. In 2024, Clase was the best reliever in baseball. In 74.1 innings pitched, Clase struck out 66 batters, walked 10, and finished his season with a remarkable 0.61 ERA. He was third in Cy Young voting and had a 667 ERA+, a ludicrous number for any stretch of pitching. The Guardians closer is under contract through the 2026 season, with club options of $10 million in 2027 and 2028. It's a fairly inexpensive contract to take on for what was the best reliever in baseball just one season ago. Advertisement To acquire such a talent, the Phillies would have to offer a lot. That's where Brandon Marsh comes in as a headliner. The Guardians need outfield help, whether it's in center or right field. Marsh, an above-average defender and solid hitter, would be a nice upgrade for the Guardians' outfield. While the Phillies would lose Marsh, they'd have Johan Rojas and Justin Crawford waiting in the wings to take over. Max Kepler could also play center field in a pinch, while Otto Kemp could take over in left field if needed. Trading for Clase would cost more than just Marsh, but he could be the main trade chip going to Cleveland in such a deal. While losing a fan-favorite like Marsh would sting, it'd lead to the Phillies getting a massive improvement in their bullpen for the next four seasons. Passan and McDaniel say there's a 20 percent chance of Clase getting traded. But, if the Phillies are willing to part with Marsh and more, they could swing a deal to lock up their closer of the future in Clase.
