Sony try to disrupt Nintendo Switch 2 launch with surprise PS5 State of Play

Metro03-06-2025
Sony has announced a new PS5 presentation for this week and they've timed it to happen just hours before the Nintendo Switch 2 launch.
You'd think with the Nintendo Switch 2 launching in just a couple of days, other companies would wait for the hype to die down before pushing their own games.
So, it's genuinely shocking to see Sony not just announce a new PlayStation 5 showcase for this week, but schedule it for Wednesday, June 4 – the night right before the Switch 2 launches.
It's very clearly been done on purpose, in an act of antagonism that is very unlike Sony in the modern era, and harkens back to the bad old days of their PlayStation 1 and 2 rivalries.
As is often the case for Sony's State of Play events, those of us in the UK will need to stay up until 10pm BST to watch it, with the showcase set to last approximately 40 minutes.
There was talk of Sony having something planned for June, with rumours pointing to it being one of these smaller scale State of Plays rather than a larger E3 style showcase.
40 minutes is a decent amount of time for a flurry of game reveals, but past experience points to them mostly being from third parties rather than Sony's in-house studios.
The last State of Play from February was actually very good though, after a string of disappointing presentations, with highlights including the announcement of Returnal successor Saros and a trailer for the new Onimusha game from Capcom.
As for what could be shown at this week's showcase, it's anyone's guess. It could be new footage for Ghost Of Yōtei, since that's out this October, or an update on one of Sony's live service projects like Marathon or Fairgame$.
Maybe Sony will give the people what they want and announce a new God Of War; something that has been rumoured for several years now.
Whatever the case, it's hard to imagine Sony having anything that will be significantly more exciting than the launch of a new Nintendo console. More Trending
While the two companies are competitors at the end of the day, we can't help but find the timing of this showcase is disrespectful on Sony's part. What's for certain is that it isn't accidental.
It's also wildly pointless since no one's going to cancel their Switch 2 pre-orders at the last minute to save their money for a PlayStation 5 or whatever new exclusives are announced.
Plus, a significant chunk of the viewing audience will want to own both consoles anyway.
That is unless Sony has some monumental announcement planned, that is going to change the status quo, but if that was the case they almost certainly would've made it a full showcase and not just a State of Play.

Ozzy Osbourne's final wish for biopic on his life that won't be fulfilled

Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne lived a life ripe for a movie adaptation – with one officially in the works since 2021. At the late 76-year-old's final-ever gig on July 5 in his hometown of Birmingham, at Villa Park, his son Jack even had fresh updates on the project promising 'we have a lot of good momentum on the Ozzy biopic'. The rocker's boy revealed there was a director attached, and that the script was completed for the Sony-produced film. 'It is about to go through a script rewrite. It's going to be raw. We are not pulling any punches, we are really laying it all out,' he added to The Sun. An unsuspecting comment that Ozzy himself made on the film has now come to pass with his death on July 22. Discussing the developing project with wife of over four decades Sharon on the Osbournes podcast in 2024, she revealed: 'Movies take forever to make. Forever!' Ozzy's quip in response revealed his hope for the biopic as he commented: 'By the time they finish this film, I'll be dead… I wanna be alive to f***ing see it!' Sadly, that won't be the case for the musician, aka the Prince of Darkness, after a tough few years with his health following a Parkinson's diagnosis after a string of complications due to a fall in 2019. During the same chat, Sharon, 72, shared her hopes for the actress that could play her, suggesting Oppenheimer and We Live in Time star Florence Pugh or 'the little girl from Game Of Thrones' – a likely reference to Bella Ramsey, who portrayed Lyanna Mormont on the show and before starring as Ellie in The Last Of Us. But Ozzy himself had an even more epic answer as to who could take on his rollercoaster of a life and career. In 2010, before the Ozzy biopic was in development, The Nerdist podcast host Chris Hardwick asked him who he would pick to play him in a movie about his life. Without missing a beat, the rocker confidently revealed his pick, simply answering: 'Denzel Washington.' The two-time Oscar winner, who has a career total of 10 Academy Award nominations so far, has previously featured in films as varied as Taining Day, Malcolm X and The Tragedy of Macbeth. In the wake of his death, fans have been sharing Ozzy's witty reaction as they remember him fondly. 'Your turn Denzel – this is what Ozzy Osbourne would've wanted,' posted @screenthrill on Instagram. 'Denzel would nail the role,' responded @yar_zednanref, while Katie added: 'Hopefully someone who is probably working on the Ozzy biopic just needs to make this happen (or maybe put Denzel in a post credit scene where he's singing Crazy Train or War Pigs in costume).' In 2019, Sharon revealed she'd been working on developing a biopic about her early days and relationship with her iconic husband after she learned another rival script had been doing the rounds in Hollywood. She dismissed it as 'a load of crap', complaining it 'didn't make sense' and 'didn't have a heart'. 'I don't want to do another rock and roll, sex, drugs and money movie about a musician. That's not what I'm doing,' she told Variety. 'There hasn't been a movie about a woman that actually works on the management side – that's a true story – and somebody that succeeds through the struggle and you come out the other side.' Sharon said the film would cover 'everything before we get married', which they did in 1982, therefore omitting a lot of Ozzy's hellraising. At that stage she'd approached 28 Years Later filmmaker Danny Boyle to direct already and said she would want 'a complete unknown for Ozzy' as it's him 'at a very young age'. The following year, the couple teased more about the movie in an interview with Rolling Stone and a few changes that had been made. 'From what I understand, it's about Sharon and I and our relationship. It's how we met, fell in love, and how we married. She's my other half. She grew up a lot with me, and I grew up a lot with her,' Ozzy explained. 'I hope it will be a story that everybody can relate to,' Sharon added. 'You don't have to be a fan of the music, because it's a story about a survivor. No matter what life throws at you, you pick yourself up and you start again. It's just an amazing story of overcoming everything that's thrown at you in your life.' Son Jack confirmed they'd asked the writer to focus on 1979 to 1996, bringing the timeline forward compared to Sharon's initial idea. Suitably, his mum then insisted that the biopic would be 'a lot more real' than the Freddie Mercury and Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody because 'we don't want it to be squeaky, shiny clean and all of that'. 'We're not making it for kids. It's an adult movie for adults.' In October 2021, the official announcement then came via Variety, confirming the producers and studios involved as Polygram Entertainment, Sony Pictures and Osbourne Media – which is Sharon and two of the couple's children, Jack and daughter Aimée . The scriptwriter was revealed to be Oscar-nominated Billy Elliot and Rocketman scribe Lee Hall and the focus of the film the decades-long bond between the iconic rock star and his manager wife, which exploded onto the pop culture scene in the 2000s thanks to their TV reality show The Osbournes. 'Our relationship at times was often wild, insane and dangerous but it was our undying love that kept us together,' shared Sharon. 'We're thrilled to partner with Sony Pictures and Polygram to bring our story to the screen.' More Trending The update also confirmed that the biopic would feature music from both Black Sabbath and Ozzy's solo career. Jack Osbourne, 39, also shared his hopes for the earliest release possible date for the biopic at his dad's last show, as he confirmed the director they'd landed was 'absolutely phenomenal' and a 'die-hard fan' of his influential father. In terms of a predicted release, he added to The Sun: 'If the evil overlords of Hollywood give us the green light, we could be filming in the spring, so maybe it will be out by the summer of 2027.' It remains to be seen whether Ozzy's death could affect these plans. Got a story? Donkey Kong Bananza fan breaks game by painting the cartridge yellow

An overly enthusastic Donkey Kong fan has almost ruined their Nintendo Switch 2 by spray painting one of their game cartridges banana yellow. Donkey Kong Bananza is a great game and it's been a very long time since there was another big budget Donkey Kong title, so some fans, with a lot of nostalgia for the franchise, have got a bit carried away with themselves. One major point of conversation has been the game's placement in the wider Donkey Kong timeline or rather how it seems to contradict it entirely. We're not going to get into that again here, but some fans are oddly annoyed by the lack of consistency… even though the series has never had in-depth storylines. Another even stranger trend has been trying to paint the cartridge the game comes on yellow, like the Donkey Kong 64 one. That's not a very good idea though, as one fan in particular has discovered. The fan in question is one gardnerhartung, or merely Gardner, on TikTok who recently shared a video expressing disappointment that the physical game cartridge for Donkey Kong Bananza is the usual red colour, like other Switch 2 cartridges. His reasoning is that, back in the day, a couple of Donkey Kong games received unique yellow cartridges when they came out, specifically 1995's Donkey Kong Land for the Game Boy and 1996's Donkey Kong 64 for the Nintendo 64. It was a fun novelty, but it really was only those two games. Yet Gardner, in his own words, was 'displeased' with Bananza not following suit and filmed himself disassembling the cartridge so he can paint it yellow without damaging the game and its connection pins. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. The final result is admittedly authentic looking, but it ultimately proved fruitless since the cartridge would no longer fit into the console, either due to the extra layers of paint making it slightly bigger or it wasn't put back together properly. In a follow-up video, Gardner showed he was able to force the cartridge in eventually and, from the sound of things, actually play the game. But the cartridge is now stuck, and he can't remove it, with one attempt with a pair of metal pliers only breaking part of it off. While some of the comments do try to offer advice on how to remove the cartridge, there are unsurprisingly a lot of people mocking Gardner for even attempting any of this to begin with. The videos have gone viral enough to generate at least three separate Reddit threads, where plenty of people either insult Gardner or accuse him of just trying to draw attention. Whatever the case, Gardner appears to be taking has fame well. In a third video, where it seems he's about to address the mean comments and media coverage, he reveals he was sent a threatening email from Nintendo. Signed by 'John Nintendo himself', it says unless Gardner gets the cartridge removed by the end of the day, the company will take his house and brick his Switch 2 (admittedly, that second one is something Nintendo can actually do). He then shows that a second attempt at using the pliers was successful and has presumably left his Switch 2 undamaged, but the cartridge itself is in pieces. If there's any lesson to be learned from this, it's don't spray paint your games, especially with how expensive they are nowadays, although you'd think most people would know not to do that. More Trending In other Donkey Kong news, although Nintendo hasn't shared official sales figures yet, data by NielsenIQ and shared by The Game Business says Donkey Kong Bananza enjoyed the biggest opening week in the UK in the franchise's history… maybe. As it stands, 2010's Donkey Kong Country Returns (the original Wii game, not the Switch remaster) officially holds that record, but NielsenIQ admits it currently lacks data for how many copies of Bananza were sold directly from Nintendo's online store and the eShop. Even if Bananza has outperformed every other Donkey Kong game in the UK, that doesn't really mean much as the series has never done tremendously well over here. Although Donkey Kong Country helped the SNES to beat the Mega Drive (aka Genesis) in the US, during the 90s, it didn't have quite the same effect here, where it wasn't until the DS and Wii era when Nintendo really became popular in the UK. You're not required to unlock a specific number of Banandium Gems from each layer to advance, so feel free to race through the game and Teeleport between layers to boost your stats. As you delve deeper, though, we recommend increasing your punch strength as the terrain becomes tougher. So don't gauge your progress based on the layer you're on – and certainly don't assume there are only ten layers as some players have already discovered. There are plenty of Donkey Kong Bananza layers to explore, each offering different climates and opportunities to find those crucial Banandium Gems. So roll up your sleeves and start digging.
