REVEALED: Why Kaizer Chiefs have failed to do a deal for 'Cafu'

Kaizer Chiefs wanted to sign Thibang 'Cafu' Phete, but a surprise hurdle got in the way of them and the 31-year-old holding midfielder.
Sekhukhune are the frontrunners to sign the seasoned star.
Phete is currently with the Icelandic side IF Vestri.

Thibang Phete has dropped a strong hint that he's ready to return home. Local outlet FARPost believe Sekhukhune are favourites to sign a man whose extensive experience includes stints in Portugal and the UAE. Phete has four caps for South Africa.
'Things have been good so far, I'm trying to adapt to the weather [in Iceland], but I'm very grateful for the opportunity they [IF Vestri] gave me,' Phete said, via FARPost .
'I have considered coming back home, especially now with having a new family, my decision will always be surrounding them. Even coming to Iceland was a bit difficult for them, but I had to make the sacrifice.'
Former Orlando Pirates full-back duo Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane would add experience in defence. 25-year-old Nkanyiso Shinga is another new option at left-back, after spending seven years in Portugal. 31-year-old Thibang 'Cafu' Phete is a versatile operator who can play as the hard man in midfield or in defence. 22-year-old winger Asanele Velebayi has been a long-standing target, while 26-year-old playmaker Ethan Chislett returns to South Africa after Port Vale got relegated to the fourth tier of English football. Etiosa Ighodaro and the relatively unknown Flavio Silva could bolster the attack. A deal for Ighodaro, however, has stalled.
Finally, some good news for Kaizer Chiefs fans

Eric Tinkler's questions Sipho Mbule's output at Sekhukhune ahead of Orlando Pirates opener

Eric Tinkler believes Sekhukhune United have the squad depth and quality to break into the top three this season. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Sekhukhune United will be chasing back-to-back league victories over Orlando Pirates when the two sides meet in their 2025/26 Betway Premiership opener at Orlando Stadium this Saturday (kick-off 5:30pm). Babina Noko enter the new season with confidence following another respectable campaign, having secured a fourth-place finish in the Premiership. Sekhukhune narrowly missed out on a spot in next season's CAF Confederation Cup, with Stellenbosch FC edging ahead late in the race to secure the final continental slot after their own deep run in the competition last season. Considering the challenges they faced, including a mid-season coaching change, Sekhukhune's achievements were admirable. Lehlohonolo Seema departed the club midway through the campaign and was replaced by former Cape Town City boss Eric Tinkler. Video Player is loading. Now preparing for a full season in charge, Tinkler will look to build on that solid foundation. Interestingly, one of his standout results last term came against Pirates—his former employers—when Sekhukhune edged the Soweto giants 1-0 in a tightly contested fixture that proved costly in the Sea Robbers' title charge. That victory gave Tinkler and his side a psychological boost, and they will be eager to replicate that outcome on Saturday against a Pirates team determined to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the title again this season. Both sides have been among the busiest in the transfer market, and Tinkler has overseen an active window, making several changes to the squad as he seeks to build a more balanced and competitive team. A number of new signings have arrived, while some familiar faces have departed. Among those to leave is Sipho Mbule, who spent last season on loan at Sekhukhune from Sundowns. The midfielder has since joined the Sea Robbers on a permanent deal and could now face his former teammates in the opening match of the season

Good news for Orlando Pirates: Ouaddou won't change Riveiro's structures

Orlando Pirates' new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has made it clear that he will build on what Jose Riveiro left behind. The Spanish coach was in charge of the Buccaneers from 2022 until 2025, and won five trophies in three seasons. Riveiro transformed the Pirates side that looked below par before his arrival and made them one of the best teams in Africa. Having left for Al Ahly, Orlando Pirates have found Ouaddou as his replacement. The Moroccan coach has won his first match in charge and could very well become a fan favourite if he continues from where Riveiro left off. 'As a new coach, it is very important to keep the legacy,' Ouaddou said, as quoted by SPORTSWIRE . 'When you arrive at a club such as Orlando Pirates that has been working well, that has built a legacy for three years, it would be stupid for me to come and try to change everything,' he added. 'Let's keep the good things and try and bring my own touch. So, we are expecting an exciting season; we want to please our fans.' 'When I saw the fans in the opening game (last week's MTN8 quarter-final), it was just fantastic. So, we don't want to disappoint them,' he said. 'We are ready; we did a good pre-season camp (in Spain), the club made some new signings, the scouting department did a tremendous job, and I'm a happy coach because I have a choice.' 'We cannot hide. We are going to play our role this season. It will not be easy, because every year the PSL is getting more and more difficult, with lots of contenders in the league. Of course, we are ready, and we are ready to play our role.' Ouaddou will be in charge of Orlando Pirates' first league match of the season this weekend against Sekhukhune United. Kaizer Chiefs (Signings & Exits): FIVE expected deals!

Kaizer Chiefs are set to make more changes to their squad this transfer window. Kaizer Chiefs have completed 18 new deals so far. So, Amakhosi have signed SIX new players and promoted four DDC youngsters to the first team. Meanwhile, EIGHT players have been released by Chiefs. So, who is next? Fiacre Ntwari and Edson Castillo face likely departures out of Naturena. As reported on The South African , Ntwari is not in Nabi's plans for the up-and-coming 2025/26 season. Meaning, he is likely to be released. Moreover, Castillo's departure is being finalised with an announcement expected soon. 'It's been said head coach Nasreddine Nabi could be open to his [Castillo's] potential exit, allowing the club to be more flexible in the market as they look to lure new foreign recruits to bolster the squad for the upcoming season, ' the report read on iDiskiTimes . Chiefs have identified the need to sign an attacker – or two. They have been liked with the likes of Percy Tau, Fiston Mayele and Zakhele Lepasa (who has left Orlando Pirates) up front. However, they will not be signing these players. However, Dzenan Zajmovic is being considered and their is still interest in Etiosa Ighodaro. Outbound Sundowns striker, Ighodaro is currently training alone. As things stand, Chiefs are still interested but the striker is contemplating his options. Hence, the need to train alone, to reflect and make this career-changing decision. Meanwhile, Nasreddine Nabi has expressed interest in signing Zajmovic. 'I don't want to comment on the striker from Galaxy. I'm not sure if he's part of the club's plans or if his administrative issues have been resolved. But if the opportunity arises to recruit him – especially if he has residency – then yes,' he stated on IOL . Furthermore, they are close to securing a winger and midfielder from PSL rivals. Winger, Asenele Velebayi and midfielder, Luke Maartman have both agreed personel terms with Chiefs. Therefore, they will both join Amakhosi if the legal dispute is resolved.
