J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele clinch U.S. Ryder Cup spots

August 11 - Three of the six automatic qualifying spots for the U.S. Ryder Cup team have now been filled, with J.J. Spaun and Xander Schauffele joining Scottie Scheffler on captain Keegan Bradley's roster. Russell Henley, Bryson DeChambeau and Harris English enter the final week of automatic qualifying on Monday in the Nos. 4-6 spots, respectively, in the U.S. rankings. The top six after this week's BMW Championship will represent Team USA against Team Europe at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y., from Sept. 26-28. The squad will have six additional captain's picks, with Bradley potentially competing as a playing captain. Spaun secured his spot with a runner-up finish Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, where he lost to England's Justin Rose in a playoff. The 2025 U.S. Open champion is up to No. 6 in the Official World Golf Ranking after starting the year outside the top 100. Schauffele, who has made 70 consecutive cuts on the PGA Tour, finished T22 on Sunay to mathematically clinch his spot. Scheffler finished T3 on Sunday but has long been a lock for the squad with wins at the PGA Championship and the Open Championship this year, along with victories at the Memorial and the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. Russell Henley has 11,904.82 Ryder Cup rankings points, followed by DeChambeau (10,774.98), English (10,439.55) and Justin Thomas (10,347.59). Players gain one point per $1,000 earned at each non-major PGA TOUR event and gain 1.5 points per $1,000 earned at major championships. The BMW Championship, with a $20 million purse, opens Thursday at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. DeChambeau, who competes with LIV Golf, has no chance to earn additional points this week. However, Bradley said last month that there would be a spot on the team for the two-time U.S. Open champion whether he stays in the top six or not. --Field Level Media

Bronny James plants kisses on girlfriend in PDA-filled anniversary posts

Bronny James, the son of LeBron James, recently celebrated his anniversary with his girlfriend, Parker Whitfield. The Los Angeles Lakers guard posted a mirror selfie with his boo on Sunday to his Instagram story. The rising second-year player had his arm draped around Whitfield and captioned the post 'Anniversary dinner!' with a kissing emoji. Whitfield - the daughter of actor Dondre Whitfield and movie producer Salli Richardson-Witfield - reposted the image to her Instagram Story as well. Later in the day, she posted an image of her own to the social media platform. Whitfield was seen wearing a bikini while Bronny hugged her from behind and planted a kiss on her cheek. Very little is known about the specifics of their relationship - with the couple keeping some secrets, such as how long they've been dating. Rumors of their dating began circulating last summer - when they were seen in Paris holding hands during the Summer Olympics. James and Whitfield were spotted courtside alongside Bronny's younger brother, Bryce James, and his girlfriend Sadie Johnson. They were all also seen at a private afterparty at L'Avenue restaurant in the City of Lights. This is a crucial offseason for James - who is hoping to gain more time in JJ Redick's rotation for the 2025-26 season. Bronny told ESPN during NBA Summer League play that he'd spent the last year trying to overcome lingering issues stemming from a heart condition. He notably went into cardiac arrest two years ago prior to his only year of college basketball at USC. Eventually, Bronny was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and underwent surgery. Across 27 games in his rookie season in the NBA, James averaged 2.3 points, 0.7 rebounds, and 0.8 assists on a shooting average of 31.3 percent from the field. He was much more efficient and proficient in the G-League - averaging 21.9 points and 44.3 percent shooting.
