CPI accuses AINRC-BJP government of making Dalit Ministers scapegoat in their power struggle

The Hindu28-06-2025
The Communist Party of India has accused the AINRC-BJP government of making Ministers belonging to the Dalit community 'scapegoats' in their internal power struggle.
In a statement, party secretary A. M. Saleem said the AINRC-BJP combine which came to power in Puducherry after the 2021 Assembly polls had failed to deliver on its promises. The ruling camp was full of contradictions and caught in a power struggle, he said.
'In 2023, Chandira Priyanga, a Dalit member belonging to the AINRC was dropped from the Cabinet. And now, BJP member A.K. Sai J. Saravanan Kumar has resigned. Dalit Ministers become scapegoats whenever problems arise within the BJP and the AINRC combine. The BJP is anti-Dalit and against social justice,' Mr. Saleem said. He urged the people of Puducherry to give BJP a fitting lesson at the appropriate time.

Keralite nuns' arrest: KPCC takes out protest march to Raj Bhavan

The Governor should convey to the Centre about the public outrage in Kerala over the arrest and imprisonment of two Keralite nuns by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Chhattisgarh, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president and MLA Sunny Joseph said. Addressing a march organised by the KPCC to Raj Bhavan on Wednesday to protest against the arrest and the unconstitutional actions of the BJP administration in Chhattisgarh, Mr. Joseph pointed out that the Chhattisgarh government had foisted false charges against the nuns and had manipulated the first information report (FIR) by adding non-existent legal clauses, thus denying them bail. He said that the BJP was challenging the rule of law and it was shameful that the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh was justifying its action against the nuns, which was a violation of the civil rights guaranteed by the Constitution. Inaugurating the march, the Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said the Kerala Chief Minister should not waste any time in informing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister the State's strong protest against the unfounded action against the nuns . He said the Chhattisgarh government had been unfair in imprisoning the nuns who were engaged in humanitarian work. The Sangh Parivar's hallmark was intolerance. Instigating people and communities to fight against each other over religious freedom and rights was how the BJP was playing the people of Kerala, Mr. Satheesan said. An example He said the incident in Chhattisgarh was a stark example of the fate that awaited the minorities and the marginalised wherever the Congress was out of power The incident has tarnished the nation's secular image on the international front, he pointed out. Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala spoke about the anxiety and insecurities faced by the religious minorities in the country today. The arrest of the nuns who were engaged in humanitarian activities amongst the poor and marginalised in Chhattisgarh was a joint attempt by the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to unleash a communal riot, he said. Mr. Modi, who makes a song and dance about greeting Christians on the occasion of Christmas, has been silent about the atrocities that were being committed against the Christians by the BJP's feeder organisations, Mr. Chennithala added. AICC general secretary Deepa Dasmunshi, KPCC working president P.C. Vishnunath, acting president of Thiruvananthapuram DCC N. Sakthan and senior Congress leaders M.M. Hassan, V.M. Sudheeran, K. Muraleedharan, among others, spoke

Activist calls for special law to prevent honour killings in the State

Human rights activist and Executive Director of People's Watch, Henri Tiphagne, has urged the State government to immediately convene the Legislative Assembly and enact a special law to prevent honour killings in Tamil Nadu. Addressing the media in the district on Wednesday (July 30, 2025), Mr. Tiphagne referred to the recent murder of Kavin Selvaganesh (27) in Tirunelveli, calling it an instance of honour killing. He alleged that police personnel were among the accused and hence their arrest was being delayed by the police department itself. 'Anyone involved must be arrested immediately, and the case should be expedited to ensure swift punishment,' he said. He pointed out that several political parties, women's organisations, and Dalit groups have been protesting against honour killings, and reiterated the need for a special law to effectively curb such crimes. 'Existing laws, including those meant to prevent atrocities, are inadequate. Only a special law can offer a lasting solution,' he emphasised. Mr. Tiphagne also strongly condemned the recent murder of a High Court lawyer in Dharapuram, Tiruppur district. 'The victim, who was a person with disability, was brutally murdered, and two other lawyers were also assaulted. This heinous crime appears to have been committed with the cooperation of the police,' he alleged. He demanded a special investigation under the supervision of the Inspector General of Police, Western Zone, and said that a Deputy Superintendent of Police from Tiruppur should head the probe. 'The State government must take the incident seriously, provide adequate protection to witnesses, and take immediate action,' he said. 'The Chief Minister, who has consistently voiced support for the rights of persons with disabilities, must intervene to ensure justice is delivered in this case,' he added.

BJP leaders, workers stage protest in Karnataka's Hassan over shortage of fertilizers

The Hassan district unit of BJP's farmers' wing staged a protest in Hassan city on Wednesday, blaming the State government for the shortage of chemical fertilizers in Karnataka. The protesters, led by BJP MLAs H.K. Suresh, Cement Manju and others, formed a human chain near the office of the Joint Director of Agriculture in the city and raised slogans against the State government. Mr. Suresh, MLA for Belur, said that the State government failed to provide quality seeds and fertilizers for the farmers. 'The government did not make proper preparations for the sowing season. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had no concern for the farming community. He had no scheme for the benefit of the community,' he said. The BJP MLA alleged that fertilizers had been sold on the black market, and that the government had made the farmers purchase fertilizers from the same by paying double the price. The government should identify the agencies responsible for the shortage of fertilizers and those who sold seeds of substandard quality to the farmers and punish them, he demanded. MLA for Sakleshpur Cement Manju said that during the BJP rule in the State, the government would spend money to keep a buffer stock of fertilizers. 'However, the Congress government did not take any measure to fulfil the needs of the farmers. They had also stopped its contributions for the Prime Minister's Kisan Samman scheme. Similarly, the Raitha Vidyanidhi, that benefited the children of the farming community had also been stopped,' he added. BJP Raitha Morcha district president B.H. Narayana Gowda and other leaders took part in the protest.
