Mohamad Hasan to attend BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Brazil
According to a statement by the Foreign Ministry on Sunday, the meeting is the first gathering of foreign ministers from BRICS Member and Partner Countries this year.
It also serves as one of the key precursors to the BRICS Leaders' Summit, which is scheduled to take place on July 6 and 7 under Brazil's chairmanship.
Under Brazil's leadership, BRICS will focus on six priority areas: global health; trade and investment; climate change; artificial intelligence; reforming peace and security mechanisms within the multilateral system; and institutional development.
'These priorities resonate strongly with Malaysia's national interests and its commitment for inclusive and sustainable development.
'In particular, the emphasis on trade and investment is apt and timely, given the growing uncertainties in the global economic landscape, in the wake of the United States' unilateral tariffs,' read the statement.
During the meeting, Mohamad is scheduled to deliver Malaysia's national intervention at a dedicated session themed 'The Role of the Global South in Reinforcing Multilateralism'.
The intervention reflects Malaysia's steadfast commitment to strengthening multilateralism and amplifying the voice and interests of developing countries, aligned with the core objectives of BRICS 2025.
Malaysia is also expected to share its strategic perspectives on key global challenges.
'As Chair of ASEAN for 2025, Malaysia will actively advocate for deeper engagement between ASEAN and BRICS, aimed at fostering regional cooperation, enhancing economic collaboration, and reinforcing collective efforts toward a fairer and more sustainable global economy,' it added.
Malaysia officially becomes BRICS Partner Country on Jan 1, 2025. — BERNAMA

Russia urges Azerbaijan to repair ties with Moscow amid diplomatic crisis
FILE PHOTO: Spokesperson of Russia's Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova attends the annual press conference held by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow, Russia, January 14, 2025. REUTERS/Evgenia Novozhenina/File Photo MOSCOW/BAKU (Reuters) -The Russian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday urged Azerbaijan to restore its ties with Moscow to a level befitting "strategic cooperation" after saying that certain forces were trying to wreck the two countries' relationship. The diplomatic row began last week after two ethnic Azerbaijanis died during police raids in Russia and escalated after Baku then arrested two Russian state journalists and a further roughly 15 more Russians on suspicion of drug trafficking and cybercrime. Azerbaijan says post-mortems conducted in Baku on the two men who died in Russia showed they were beaten to death - though Moscow said one of them had died from heart problems - and that authorities in Baku had opened their own investigation. Relations have been under strain since late last year, when 38 people were killed after an Azerbaijani airliner headed from Baku to southern Russia crashed. Baku says the crash was the result of accidental damage caused by fire from air defence units in Russia. Nemat Avazov, the head of Baku's investigation into the accident, told reporters on Wednesday that his team would release its findings in the coming days. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday that Moscow had been cultivating its relationship with Baku for many years based on mutual respect and suggested unknown actors were now trying to use the situation to "warm up their hands" - a Russian phrase meaning to enrich oneself. "Just don't let them get burned," she told Sputnik Radio in an interview. "Because for us, for the two peoples, friendship relations are extremely important. And those who want to spoil them should think carefully about what they are doing." She later said in a news briefing that Baku should restore its ties with Russia, complaining that Moscow did not have any consular access to its detained citizens. "We, of course, call on the Azerbaijani side to take measures to return our ties to the level of interstate relations as set out in official documents. Let me remind you that this is the level of strategic cooperation," she said. The Kremlin has said Russia aims to negotiate the release of its journalists, who have been charged with fraud and other crimes and placed in pre-trial detention in Baku. Italy seeks economic and trade partnership with Malaysia
ROME: Italy is looking to Malaysia as a partner in its quest to enhance economic and trade sectors, according to Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani. Tajani, who also serves as the Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, highlighted Malaysia as one of the most progressive nations with whom Italy has been building partnerships in these sectors. "The relations between Italy and Malaysia have always been good. Now, we look to build it further," he said during a courtesy call to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He echoed Anwar's earlier remarks on the importance of peace and stability as the foundation to support and grow the business sector. "We have many big companies and we are ready for joint ventures and investments abroad. Italy is also the second most industrious country in Europe," he added, noting that Italy has much to offer. Anwar stated that Malaysia is an excellent partner, given its "dynamic and clarity" in policies. He mentioned that PETRONAS, one of the top companies globally, is more than ready to collaborate with the European nation. Asean, he noted as regional chair, is one of the most peaceful and economically promising areas in the world. 'This will certainly pave the way for greater cooperation,' he said. Anwar expressed gratitude for Tajani's visit, reflecting both nations' commitment to strengthening bilateral relations based on mutual respect and understanding. "We have been talking about expanding our cooperation in various fields, including relations between Asean and the European Union,' he added. Anwar mentioned discussions on regional and global conflicts, including those in Gaza, Ukraine, Iran, and Israel. He also expressed his admiration for Italy's rich history, literature, and art, sharing how Dante's Inferno, the song Caruso, and Leonardo Da Vinci's works have impacted the world, drawing applause from the Italians present. Anwar noted Italy's transformation in embracing the AI realm and expressed anticipation for increased cooperation with Italy. COMPLI Keywords:

Asean on track to meet clean energy goals, says Petra deputy sec-gen
Energy transition and water transformation ministry deputy secretary-general Mareena Mahpudz says several Asean countries aim to achieve net-zero emissions between 2050 and 2065. KUCHING : Asean is on track to achieving its clean energy and climate goals, the energy transition and water transformation ministry said. The ministry's deputy secretary-general (energy) Mareena Mahpudz said the region had already made notable progress, particularly in the power sector where countries were working towards their net-zero targets. She said several Asean countries, such as Malaysia and Singapore, aimed to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, while others such as Indonesia and Thailand had set targets for 2060 and 2065, respectively. 'Even now, Malaysia has already achieved its target for this year. We were supposed to reach 31% by the end of the year, but it's already close to 32%,' Mareena told FMT, referring to the share of renewable energy in Malaysia's installed power capacity. At the regional level, the Asean Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) sets out a long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, with a strong focus on expanding renewable energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Asean has committed to achieving a 23% share of renewables in its total primary energy mix by this year. While current figures sit at around 14.4%, Mareena said efforts were being scaled up across the region to close the gap — through greater investment in renewable energy, improved energy efficiency, and the adoption of clean technologies. This regional push was reinforced during the 43rd Asean Senior Officials' Meeting on Energy, held from June 16-18, which laid the groundwork for the second phase of the APAEC roadmap. Mareena also highlighted the launch of the Asean Power Grid (APG) Financing Facility under Malaysia's chairmanship, a platform aimed at mobilising funding for cross-border energy projects and accelerating the region's clean energy transition. 'It's a collaboration between financial institutions, the economic sector, and the energy sector. It can help attract more investors to the region and support local industries.' She added that the facility had already attracted support from Bank Negara Malaysia, the Asian Development Bank, and the World Bank. 'We have also received interest from the European Commission, Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Islamic Development Bank and several Chinese banks too.' Mareena said Asean was also working to strengthen the region's clean energy infrastructure — including solar panel manufacturing and battery storage — to meet rising demand and build a more self-sustaining green economy. 'It's challenging, but I believe moving forward it will be very successful, and we can achieve the targets we've set for the region,' she said.
