Teen swept away in Kukrail, body found

Time of Indiaa day ago
Lucknow: The body of 14-year-old Rizwan Ahmad, who went missing on Saturday after being swept away in the Kukrail river near Rahimnagar, was found following a seven-hour-long search operation.
The rescue mission was led by Mahanagar police station house officer (SHO) Akhilesh Mishra, who, along with two dedicated teams. "We began the operation with the SDRF team, and although hope was fading by evening, we continued to comb the river," Mishra said.
Rizwan and his friend Sahil, also 14, had gone to collect floating garbage from the river. However, a sudden rise in the water level due to rainfall caused Rizwan to be swept away by the current.
Sahil managed to swim to safety.
The incident took place around 3pm near a Jal Nigam barrel. After the incident, locals informed the authorities.
Kismat Ali, 45, Rizwan's father, works as a garbage collector, while his two brothers, Zainul, 19, and Raju, 18, are sweepers. Their mother, Bashirun Nisa, 40, is a house help.
Municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar visited the spot and directed officials to begin immediate rescue efforts.
Teams from Jal Nigam, SDRF, local police and municipal corporation began a search operation.
According to the municipal corporation, a preliminary inquiry shows that the children entered the water on their own.
The barrel and the drain are part of the Jal Nigam infrastructure, and water flow increases in this area after rainfall. There was no immediate evidence of structural fault or unattended hazard. Officials said the boy drowned near the meeting of the river and the Jal Nigam's outlet, a zone where water speed increases after rain.
Mayor Sushma Kharakwal reached the spot and appealed to the parents and residents to prevent children from going near open drains, barrels, or river outlets, especially after rainfall. She said that instructions will be reviewed regarding access to such areas during the rainy season.

Imposter in SI uniform caught aboard Guruvayur Express

T'puram: A young man posing as a sub-inspector (SI) was arrested by railway police after his overly polished appearance in official uniform raised suspicions. The accused, Akhilesh, a native of Kalliyoor, Thiruvananthapuram, was nabbed while travelling on the Chennai Egmore–Guruvayur Express on Saturday morning. Akhilesh, dressed in what appeared to be a spotless and well-fitted SI uniform, was noticed by on-duty officers and members of DanSaf squad—a special railway safety team. The officers found his appearance unusually meticulous, prompting closer scrutiny. Ironically, it was the 'excessive neatness and sharpness' of the uniform, something rarely seen among real officers on duty, that triggered the doubts. Upon questioning, Akhilesh failed to give convincing answers and attempted to dodge inquiries. This behaviour deepened suspicions and officials soon confirmed that he was impersonating a police officer. Further interrogation led to a full confession, though the motive behind the impersonation remains unclear. Police are now investigating whether Akhilesh wore the SI uniform to commit fraud or simply as a prank or personal thrill. Railway police registered his arrest and he was handed over to Alappuzha RPF (Railway Protection Force) for further legal proceedings and detailed investigation. Police have not ruled out the possibility of prior offences or attempts to misuse the uniform to deceive public. Investigators are checking if Akhilesh tried to gain unauthorised access or favours during the journey or at railway stations by posing as an officer. Officials have also launched a probe into how he acquired the uniform and whether others were involved. "Misusing the police uniform is a serious offence that undermines public trust and could be used for unlawful gains," a senior RPF officer said. This incident raised fresh concerns over security protocols and the ease with which individuals can impersonate uniformed personnel on public transport. Police urged passengers to remain alert and report any suspicious activity, especially involving impersonation of officials. Railway police assured a thorough investigation into the case. Further charges may be added depending on the outcome of the inquiry into Akhilesh's intentions. Street spectacle: Raj police's public parade of accused raises eyebrows

Jaipur: In the town of Merta in Nagaur district, a scene unfolded Friday that felt more like street theatre than police procedure. Three men—heads shaved, dressed in women's salwar suits, and chanting admissions of guilt—were paraded through the town streets by police. Their hands were folded in front of them as they repeated, "We made a mistake," while locals watched and filmed. The trio allegedly swindled an elderly man out of Rs 2 lakh with a familiar scam: a fake lottery win. Police said the men, wearing female attire to disguise themselves, convinced the victim he won Rs 4.5 lakh. The elderly man borrowed money to claim his supposed reward, only to see the conmen vanish on a motorcycle moments after receiving the cash. When the police tracked them down, the men were still wearing the salwar suits they used for the scam. Police officers decided to march them through town exactly as they were caught. The parade stretched from the local bus stand to the local court. The message wasn't just for the three men. It was for everyone watching—on the street, on social media, and across the state. Police in Rajasthan are increasingly using public shaming as a tool in their crackdown on organised and financial crimes. According to police sources, these parades are designed to rattle confidence—both of the accused and those who might consider following their path. They are also meant to comfort the public, who may otherwise feel powerless in the face of rising organised crimes. In other parts of Rajasthan also, people accused of extortion or affiliated with organised crime groups have been paraded. For example, the men accused of firing at a house in Jhunjhunu's Gudhagorji were paraded in identical underwear in Jan. Videos of such scenes spread rapidly online, earning praise. Police officers, when asked about the spectacle, denied that these walks are intended as public shaming. They maintained that the accused are simply being taken to court for legal production or to the crime scene for physical verification and, in some cases, this is done on foot due to logistical reasons. While many on social media cheer the police for taking bold steps, legal experts and human rights advocates are less enthusiastic. They argue that public punishment before a court conviction undermines due process and puts the justice system on a slippery slope. "Sensationalising crime this way may do little to prevent it and may, in fact, cause more harm," said Naresh Kumar, a lawyer. Public outcry does not diminish gravity of the offence, HC denies bail

New Delhi: Denying bail to a man in a POCSO case, Delhi High Court on Friday observed that mere public outcry and media coverage of the incident cannot diminish the gravity of the offence. A single judge bench of Justice Girish Kathpalia observed that the court cannot minutely examine the evidence on record and that the broad picture showed the gruesome manner in which an eight-year-old girl was raped and killed, that too by her cousin. He said, "Merely because there was public outcry and media coverage of the incident, the gravity of the offence does not diminish." According to the prosecution, the accused committed rape upon an eight-year-old girl, strangled her, and hid the dead body in a plastic bag in a pit. He said that there was doubt regarding the time of death of the girl. The FIR was registered in 2016 for offences under Section 302 (murder), 363 (kidnapping), and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of IPC, and Section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the POCSO Act. The bench noted that while prolonged incarceration is certainly a ground for releasing the accused on bail, it is not the solitary one. It said, "The court has to keep in mind various judicially sanctified parameters, including the nature and gravity of the alleged crime and the material on record to support the same." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like She Was Everyone's Dream Girl In 90's, This Is Her Now The Latest Article Undo The court, dismissing the bail application, observed, "It is not just the grave consequences of the offences alleged against the accused/applicant. One also cannot ignore that a relationship of trust between the cousins was exploited by the accused/applicant in such a brutal manner." The counsel of the accused, referring to the post-mortem report of the girl, submitted that the entire autopsy was carried out within one hour, which raisesdoubt over its correctness. He also argued that the accused has been in jail for about nine years and four months and cannot be confined indefinitely.
