Mumbai, Jul 28 (PTI) A day after the arrest of Eknath Khadse's son-in-law in a drugs case, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Monday claimed the former Maharashtra minister was being targeted for linking BJP leader Girish Mahajan with an alleged honey trap scandal.
Pranjal Khewalkar, the husband of Eknath Khadse's daughter Rohini Khadse, was arrested along with six others after the police raided a 'drug party' at an apartment in Pune in the early hours of Sunday and claimed to have seized narcotics, hookah set ups and liquor from there.
Rohini Khadse is the state head of the NCP (SP) women's wing.
'The entire matter is suspicious,' Raut said.
'Khadse has been talking about honey traps for the last three days. He is talking about the involvement of (state cabinet minister) Girish Mahajan in this but there is no probe related to it. Now that Khadse is talking, his son-in-law has been arrested,' the Rajya Sabha member said.
Such incidents were occurring everywhere in Maharashtra, Raut said.
He also accused the police of having become a servant and targeting those who speak against the government.
Mahajan recently accused Khadse of trying to malign his image by raising baseless allegations in connection with an alleged honeytrap scandal.
The fight between Khadse, a BJP veteran who quit the party to join the then undivided NCP in 2020, and Mahajan is not new. Both belong to the Jalgaon district.
'We followed a principle that family members (of political rivals) were never dragged. Unfortunately, people from the BJP are now targeting family members, maligning them,' Raut charged.
He claimed that after the arrest of Khadse's son-in-law, Mahajan was just short of breaking into a dance.
NCP leader and former minister Nawab Malik's son-in-law was arrested in a similar NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act case and so was actor Shahrukh Khan's son Aryan Khan, Raut pointed out. PTI PR GK

Two held after shootout with UP police in connection with hit-and-run case
Two men were arrested following a police encounter in connection with a hit-and-run incident that killed an e-rickshaw driver and injured four others in Uttar Pradesh's Deoria district, officials said. The accused have been identified as Khurshid Shah of Kushinagar district, and Munab Ali of Gopalganj district in Bihar, Shukla said. Following the incident, Bariyarpur police reached the scene, arrested the two suspects, and brought them to the local police station, where a case under BNS sections 103 (murder) and 109 (attempt to murder) was registered. During a police-led site inspection of the vehicle used in the crime, the accused, late Thursday night, allegedly attempted to escape by pulling out country-made pistols hidden inside the pickup truck and opening fire on the police team. In retaliatory fire by the police, both suspects sustained bullet injuries to their legs, the officer said. They were immediately taken to the district hospital in Deoria for treatment. Authorities said further legal proceedings are underway, he added.

In BJP's Punjab push, Haryana CM Saini steals a march over CM Mann on Udham Singh martyrdom day
In a move that created ripples in political circles, Haryana Chief Minister and BJP leader Nayab Singh Saini visited Punjab's Sunam to pay tributes to Shaheed Udham Singh on his 86th martyrdom day on Thursday, hours before Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and the AAP's national convener Arvind Kejriwal reached the legendary freedom fighter's native town in Sangrur district. The Haryana CM's surprise visit to the martyr's memorial not only took place before the Punjab government's function but was also marked with political symbolism. Sporting a saffron turban, Saini paid homage at the Shaheed Udham Singh Memorial, built over nearly 2 acre land in Sunam, and met the martyr's descendants. 'I pay tributes to this son of the soil who couldn't bear the Jallianwala Bagh massacre as a child and avenged it by killing Michael O'Dwyer (Punjab lieutenant governor during the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre) in England. I salute him and his family's sacrifice,' the CM told media persons. When reporters asked him about the Rs 113 crore bill sent by the Punjab government to Haryana for the upkeep and maintenance of Bhakra canal, he side-stepped the row, just saying, 'Talks are on with the neighbouring state. Both states will sit together to find a solution.' Saini, who belongs to the OBC, was accompanied by Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma. After leading the BJP to a resounding win in the October 2024 Haryana Assembly polls, Saini, 55, has been going all out to boost his credentials as an OBC leader. Besides engaging with prominent OBC organisations and leaders from across the country, he has also been making frequent visits to Punjab. In April this year, Saini had addressed a gathering in Derabassi in Mohali, where Gurdarsan Singh Saini, son of former Akali stalwart Gurnam Singh Derabassi, joined the BJP. Saini also participated in the Saini community events in other Punjab towns like Ropar and Kharar in March-April and had campaigned in Ludhiana in June for the BJP's Ludhiana West bypoll candidate Jiwan Gupta. Good morning! Just hours before the August 1 deadline when US President Donald Trump's tariffs were to take effect, the White House announced a new set of 'adjusted' tariffs on more than 60 trading partners and the 27-member European Union. These tariffs will kick in on August 7. In his executive order, Trump said that the new tariffs are based on additional information he has received on the 'lack of reciprocity in our bilateral trade relationships', recommendations on foreign relations and national security matters, and the status of trade negotiations with some countries. The tariffs range between 10 and 40 per cent. Certain EU goods will be exempt from duties. Countries not mentioned in the new list will be charged a baseline 10 per cent tariff. For India, the rate stands at 25 per cent, as was announced a couple of days ago. Waiting game: Although the government has stated that it will study the implications of the 25 per cent tariff rate, the view in private is that India simply cannot afford to rush into a lopsided deal, an official told my colleague Anil Sasi. India has been striving to negotiate an agreement which maintains its edge over China. Notably, the July 31 order did not change the agreed-upon 30 per cent tariff on China. As of now, confusion persists on overall tariffs on India, given that Trump is yet to specify the 'penalties' for buying Russian oil. With new announcements every few days and changing US policy, such as a proposed BRICS tariff, there's a giant question mark on the sanctity of any trade deal with the American administration. Given the current status of India's negotiations with the US, any agreement will likely be signed by September or October. Pak factor: New Delhi has also factored in Trump's growing closeness to Pakistan. It's believed that Trump has not taken kindly to India's fact-checking of his claims that he brokered the ceasefire between the duelling nations.
