USC alum will play in Super Bowl as a rookie

USA Today28-01-2025
USC alum Juju Smith-Schuster is headed to Super Bowl LIX with the Kansas City Chiefs. We know that. However, he will not be the only Trojan suiting up in New Orleans. Former USC cornerback Christian Roland-Wallace, in his rookie season with the Chiefs, is also headed to the big game. In his first year in the league, Roland-Wallace will have a chance to win his first ring.
After four years at Arizona, Roland-Wallace transferred to USC for his final season of eligibility in 2023. In his lone season with the Trojans, he was USC's top cornerback, recording 37 tackles, nine passes defended, and two interceptions.
Despite a standout college career, Roland-Wallace went unchosen in the 2024 NFL draft. However, he made Kansas City's 53-man roster nonetheless, and has made significant contributions to the Chiefs' secondary this year. Roland-Wallace finished the regular season with 34 tackles, a pass defended, and an interception. He also had a tackle in Kansas City's divisional round win over the Houston Texans.
In the Super Bowl, Roland-Wallace and the Chiefs' secondary will be matched up against a talented Eagle wide receiver room led by A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith. If they can keep Philadelphia's passing game intact, the Chiefs will have a great shot to become the first ever team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.

Former USC running back Quinten Joyner suffers torn ACL, out for 2025 season

On Monday, the current USC football team suffered a blow when the Trojans learned that they will likely be without offensive lineman DJ Wingfield this season. That same day, a former USC player was also lost for the year, as Texas Texh running back Quinten Joyner suffered a torn ACL, per Pete Nakos of On3. As a redshirt freshman at USC last season, Joyner rushed for 478 yards and three touchdowns, while also adding 89 receiving yards and a score through the air. He was seemingly set to take over as the Trojans' lead running back in 2025 following the departure of Woody Marks for the NFL. However, he elected to enter the transfer portal prior to the Las Vegas Bowl, reportedly due to an NIL dispute. Joyner landed at Texas Tech, joining a Red Raiders team that has been receiving a good amount of hype in the Big 12. With Joyner now out for the season, they will now be forced to look elsewhere for production at the running back position. Meanwhile, the Trojans were busy in the portal at the position themselves, adding New Mexico transfer Eli Sanders and JUCO back Waymond Jordan. Those two, along with sophomore Bryan Jackson, figure to get the majority of the carries for USC this fall.

Kansas City Chiefs STC Dave Doub weighs in on Skyy Moore's roster status

During his press conference on Tuesday, Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub shared his thoughts on wide receiver Skyy Moore's roster status going into the final preseason game on Friday night. "The past couple of years have been like for him, yeah, I mean, his punt return ability and kick return ability have really gotten better over the years. It showed right there. He's, solid there, on that part of it, the other part (dropped passes) it's a mental I think, with him, "said Toub, "It's just getting over that hump, he's definitely an NFL player, whether he's on our team or not, on our team, I think the return helped him." Moore contributed mightily at the start of his career before battling injuries. He notably scored his first NFL touchdown in Kansas City's victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. "I'd be happy with Skyy back there. I mean, he's broken through. He had a barrier when he was a rookie; he had a couple of bad things that happened, but then he had a lot of success in the playoffs," said Toub, "so I think he got over that, and he's comfortable back there. He's one of our best catchers on punts. So I feel comfortable, if we had had to use him, if it came down to that." The recent 88-yard punt return touchdown may have given the two-time Super Bowl champion hope of making the team this season.

Former Iowa football OT, current Bucs star in elite company in NFL players poll

We're now in the top 30 in the newest NFL players ranking of the best in the game currently. This is where the list gets extremely hard to make, as there are so many fantastic players in the league, all deserving of respect. But this is why the players get paid the big bucks. Iowa fans most recently saw George Kittle come in at 31st on the ranking, but he wasn't the highest-ranked former Hawkeye on the list. Because that honor belongs to one of the offensive tackles in the entire game. A guy who can play both left and right tackle at an elite level. And a player who just became the highest-paid offensive lineman in the history of the NFL. Tristan Wirfs was named the 28th-best player in the entire league by his fellow players. Wirfs' place on this list is very fair, maybe even a little bit too low. He's a four-time Pro Bowler, two-time First-team All-Pro, and a Super Bowl champion. Oh, and he's only 26 years old. The sky is the limit for Wirfs in terms of what he can do the rest of his career. There's a very good chance he could go down as the best offensive lineman to ever play the game. It's high praise, but he's deserved it with what he's done in the league so far. There's also a good chance that Wirfs ends up being the highest-ranked former Hawk on this list, just beating out Kittle. The rest of the list is still being revealed gradually, so we'll have to wait and see if that's the case. Regardless, it's a great accomplishment for Wirfs and another ledger to add to his resume. It's great to see a former Hawkeye have this much success in the NFL, especially after a stellar career in Iowa City. And it'll be exciting to see what Wirfs can do in 2025.
