Jimmy Fallon is a ‘Soul Man' (and very out of breath!) during ‘SNL50: The Homecoming Concert'

Jimmy Fallon opened the SNL50: The Homecoming Concert on Friday night with a live rendition of 'Soul Man,' the song made famous by the Blues Brothers, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, who starred in the first several seasons of Saturday Night Live. 'We are coming to you live from Radio City Music Hall, and I am out of breath!' Fallon shouted to the crowd of A-listers.

'Where you're seated is based on how much Lorne [Michaels] loves you,' he joked. 'I was so honored when the assistant to Lorne's assistant asked me to host tonight.' The current Tonight Show host was chosen to emcee this iconic event because 'it's awards season, which means I've got nothing going on right now.'
Just like SNL, Fallon turned 50 this year, and they both 'peaked around 25,' he deadpanned. Fallon originally starred on SNL from 1998 to 2004.
Fallon instructed the cameras to turn around and show the audience members, all of whom had a special connection to Saturday Night Live, a television staple since 1975. The Roots accompanied Fallon during his 'Soul Man' performance, which is fitting since they're by his side every night on The Tonight Show.

(Peacock via AP) This image released by Peacock shows Victoria Heuermann in a scene from the documentary "The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets." (Peacock via AP) NEW YORK (AP) — The daughter of accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann believes he 'most likely' committed the infamous killings in New York even as her mother steadfastly defends her ex-husband's innocence in a new documentary released Tuesday. The admission from Victoria Heuermann isn't made on camera but through a statement from producers near the end of 'The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets,' a three-part documentary on NBC's streaming service Peacock. Advertisement 'A week before the series release, Victoria Heuermann told the producers that based on publicly available facts that have been presented and explained to her, she now believes her father is most likely the Gilgo Beach killer,' reads a statement at the close of the final episode of the documentary, which was produced by musician 50 Cent's production company, G-Unit Film and Television. Bob Macedonio, an attorney for Heuermann's now ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, said in a statement after the documentary's release that 'time will only tell' whether his client will ever accept that her husband may have been a serial killer. Heuermann's lawyer didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment. The Manhattan architect has been charged with killing seven women, most of them sex workers, and dumping their bodies on a desolate parkway not far from Gilgo Beach on Long Island, some 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Manhattan. Advertisement He has pleaded not guilty and is due back in Riverhead court June 17 as a judge continues to weigh whether to allow key DNA evidence into the trial. In the documentary, Victoria Heuermann struggles to reconcile her childhood memories with the portrait of the killer described by authorities. She says her father was around the family '90% of the time' and was never violent toward any of them. At the same time, Victoria Heuermann acknowledged there were times when he stayed home while the family went on vacation and that she was around 10 to 13 years old when the killings happened. Prosecutors say Heuerman committed some of the killings in the basement while his family was out of town. Advertisement 'Whether or not I believe my dad did it or not, I'm on the fence about that,' said the now 28-year-old. 'Part of me thinks he didn't do it, but at the same time, I don't know, he could have just totally had a double life.' Ellerup, for her part, maintained she saw no 'abnormal behavior' in their nearly three decades of marriage. She dismissed a computer file prosecutors claim is a 'blueprint' of his crimes as 'absurd.' The document features a series of checklists for before, during and after a killing, such as a 'body prep' checklist that includes among other items a note to 'remove head and hands.' Advertisement Ellerup also shrugged off other evidence prosecutors have enumerated in court documents, including a vast collection of bondage and torture pornography found on electronic devices seized from their home, and hairs linked to Heuermann that were recovered on most of the victims' bodies. At the same time, she revealed that in July 2009, around the time one of his alleged victims went missing, Heuermann suddenly renovated a bathroom while she and their two children were on vacation for weeks to visit her family in Iceland. But she noted her former husband eventually joined the family for their final week of their trip. 'My husband, he's a family man. He's my hero,' Ellerup said. 'What I want to say to him is, 'I love you, no matter what.'' Ellerup divorced Heuermann after his arrest in 2023. But in the documentary, Victoria Heuermann says the separation was for financial reasons to protect the family's assets. Advertisement Indeed, the mother and daughter have been regularly attending court hearings with their attorney. The filmmakers even captured them speaking to Heuermann by phone from jail. A Peacock spokesperson said Ellerup was paid a location fee and a licensing fee for use of family archive materials, although the payments cannot go toward the defendant or his defense funds. The family, which also includes Ellerup's adult son from a prior marriage, is planning to put up its notoriously ramshackle house in well-to-do Massapequa Park for sale as they look to move to a property they own in South Carolina. ___ Follow Philip Marcelo on X: @philmarcelo.

R. Kelly's Attorneys File for Immediate Release From Custody, Alleging Officials Solicited Inmate to Murder Him

R. Kelly's legal team has filed an emergency motion seeking his immediate release from federal custody to home detention, claiming that his life is in danger and accusing the government of misconduct. In Tuesday's filing, reviewed by Variety, Kelly's attorneys claim that they have explicit evidence that officials solicited an inmate to murder him while in custody at a federal penitentiary in North Carolina, where he's serving a 30-year sentence. Kelly and Universal Music Must Pay Over Half-Million Dollars in Music Royalties to Victims, Judge Rules His counsel provided a sworn declaration from Mikeal Glenn Stine, a terminally ill inmate, who stated that officials offered him freedom in his final days in exchange for Kelly's murder. Stine claimed that he was told Kelly and his attorneys were planning to expose damaging information, as the filing alleges that officials violated attorney-client privilege by intercepting personal correspondence. Stine stated that officials told him he would be charged with Kelly's murder, but that evidence would be mishandled and there would be no conviction. Stine, a leader of the Aryan Brotherhood, arrived at Kelly's unit this past March, and though he was prepared to kill him, he had a change of heart and instead told Kelly that Bureau of Prisons officials directed him to carry out his murder. Kelly's counsel alleges that in June, they learned of a second member of the Aryan Brotherhood who was directed by officials to kill both Kelly and Stine. They claim that Kelly is in danger as he remains in custody with other members of the Brotherhood. 'The threat to Mr. Kelly's life continues each day that no action is taken,' reads the filing. 'More A.B. members are accumulating at his facility. More than one has already been approached about carrying out his murder. One of them will surely do what Mr. Stine has not, thereby burying the truth about what happened in this case along with Robert Kelly.' Kelly's attorney, Beau B. Brindley, is asking the judge to release him to home detention on a temporary furlough. Variety has reached out to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Chicago for comment. The singer, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was initially convicted of nine counts of a superseding indictment in Sept. 2021. He was charged with violating the Mann Act and racketeering that involved the sexual exploitation of children. The following June, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. In Feb. 2023, Kelly was separately sentenced to 20 years in prison for child sex crimes, with the judge ruling that all but one year would be served concurrently with his previous 30-year sentence. This past February, an appeals court upheld Kelly's racketeering and sex trafficking convictions as well as his 30-year prison sentence. The court rejected his claims that trial evidence was inadequate and that the trial judge made improper rulings.
