How Morley's became an 'icon' of London high streets as first sign goes on display at London Museum
For many Londonners Morley's is a staple - whether it's after school or the end of the night - the cult friend chicken brand has a loyal fanbase.
This year it's celebrating its 40th anniversary and the sign of its first restaurant is going on display at the London Museum to celebrate.
Back in 1985 the first Morley's chicken shop in Sydenham, south London was opened by Kannalingam "Indran" Selvendran - who moved to London from Sri Lanka in 1970.
For 35 years, Morley's stayed south of the River Thames and now it is run by Indran's son Shan.
'Staying rooted in south London allowed Morley's to refine its offering, build a cult following, and create something authentic before expanding more widely,' says Morley's CEO Shan Selvendran, ahead of the opening of the display at the London Museum.
'South London is where the heart is, it's home. Our head office is still based here, the family still lives in the area, and it remains the heart of our business, with the largest cluster of Morley's stores.'
Since then its spread across the capital, with 100 branches and an extremely loyal fanbase including some famous faces - earning it cult status.
Artists such as Stormzy remain devoted to the brand, with a Morley's store serving as a music video backdrop for Stormzy's 2017 hit single Big For Your Boots,
Plus South London's Krept & Konan using it for as the inspiration behind Krept's 2019 track Morley's Freestyle.
The shop has also featured as a repeat location for Amelia Dimoldenberg's popular 'Chicken Shop Date' series, playing host to celebrity interviews including Burna Boy, Rosalía, RAYE and 'Wicked' star Cynthia Erivo.
Most recently, the brand reached a global audience when it was featured in an episode of Netflix's acclaimed 'Black Mirror' series.
The sign will be exhibited as part of the museum's Hanging Out installation which celebrates the social spaces that bring London's communities together - something its founders had always hoped it would be.
Shan Selvendran, said: 'Ever since our beginnings as a small family-run shop, it was always my father's dream to make Morley's a household name.
"Although his unexpected passing meant he wasn't here to see just how far we've grown, Dad's vision lives on - and it means the world to see our story being recognised by London Museum.
"Morley's means so much to so many people – as part of their own lives and heritage – so this moment is also for everyone who has been a part of that journey.'
Dhikshana Turakhia Pering, Head of Creative Programmes at London Museum, said: 'Morley's is an icon of London's high streets – a name that instantly evokes memories of after school hangouts and late-night stories for generations of Londoners.
"It's part of the DNA and culture of London and tells a story about community spirit and entrepreneurialism that's at the heart of this city.
"Acquiring the original sign has been on our wish list since the early inception of Hanging Out. We're thrilled it'll join the museum's collection as part of London's story.'
Morley's isn't the only sign the museum is hoping to display, when it opens in 2026 - it is calling on businesses from music venues and sports clubs to corner shops, nail salons and cafes to donate signs.

Maya Jama's real motive for Stormzy split as she moves on with Ruben Dias
Love Island host Maya Jama and Stormzy broke up for a second time last year after rekindling their romance in August 2023 Over two years after giving love a second shot, Maya Jama and Stormzy went their separate ways again last summer. The breakup reportedly followed a day at Silverstone where Maya was spotted watching Stormzy perform from the sidelines. Now, the Love Island beauty, is besotted with Manchester City player, Ruben Dias. The Love Island host, 30, and Portuguese footballer, 28, were first linked in November last year, and it seems their relationship has only blossomed from there. New photos of the smitten pair have captured the TV bombshell and footballer enjoying a sunny getaway aboard a luxury yacht off the idyllic coast of Capri. Maya has definitely moved on from Stormzy almost one year on from their split, as she embraces her new romance with Ruben. Here, we take a look at Maya and Stormzy's turbulent dating history and why, despite a rekindled spark, the pair ultimately couldn't make it work. The Rumour-Fuelled Split Their relationship began in 2014 and ended five years later amid whispers Stormzy had cheated on Maya with Jorja Smith. While he denied infidelity, the rapper admitted in Lessons that he'd 'done the dirt.' 'Do you know what? I actually didn't cheat,' Stormzy later clarified. 'I swear to God, I didn't cheat... We'd broken up and I was out publicly being a rapper, being very inconsiderate... I was out looking like I didn't give a f**k. It didn't need to be cheating for it to be a disrespect.' Moving On After their split, Maya began dating NBA star Ben Simmons. The relationship, which included an engagement, ended in 2022. 'While they both care for each other so much… they just come from two different worlds,' a source said. 'Their nonstop careers and endless travel… made it incredibly impossible to make it work.' Stormzy remained single during this period. The Reunion In August 2023, the couple rekindled their romance during a trip to Greece. Rumour had it Stormzy's mother encouraged him to make amends. A source said: 'Stormzy is really open about wanting to settle down and have kids one day and he knows Maya is 'The One'.' The pair appeared happier than ever, making public appearances at Glastonbury and the British Grand Prix. The Final Goodbye But last July, the couple confirmed they had split again, issuing a heartfelt joint statement on Instagram: 'We've been laughing whilst drafting this because we never, ever, in a million years thought we'd be the couple announcing a breakup,' they wrote. 'But for the sake of clarity and, more importantly, to allow us the space and grace that's needed for us both to be able to navigate this next bit of our lives with peace, we thought it might be best to.' They explained: 'We fell madly in love in 2014, broke up in 2019, and then spent five years manoeuvring life apart. We decided to try for the final time in August 2023, and we've spent this past year trying our best to make it work; however, we recently decided to call it quits.' Reflecting on their growth, they added: 'We were 21 and 20 when we first met—both at the beginning of our careers—and spent five years growing together and then five years growing separately, so this final attempt required a whole lot of figuring out, relearning.' Despite the split, there's no bad blood. 'We still think the absolute world of each other… we are still friends and will always be friends (so if you see us having a lil catch-up at The Brits or something, don't cause a fuss, we are dawgs!)' Maya closed the message on behalf of them both: 'We're kindly asking for the grace to let both of us keep it moving and not be bothered about it (we highly doubt this'll work, but we're still kindly asking anyway. Love you guys and thank you for all the love you've showered us with, it's been beautiful,' signing off with 'MJ and Mike.'

Greggs Sausage roll honoured at Madame Tussauds in London
The beloved pastry secured a top spot at the wax figure museum, standing alongside the likes of Sir David Attenborough, Stormzy and William Shakespeare at the attraction's Culture Capital Zone. The one-of-a-kind replica has been handcrafted by the talented artists at Madame Tussauds and is the first time a food item has been given the "celebrity treatment". The special exhibit will be available to see from Thursday, June 5. This is being done to mark National Sausage Roll Day (Image: Jonathan Short/Greggs) Jo Kinsey, Studio Manager at Madame Tussauds London, said: "The Greggs Sausage Roll is synonymous with British culture - we just had to put it in our Culture Zone. "Our artists have put in numerous hours to capture every detail of this popular menu item. "The pressure was on to capture it perfectly because we know how passionate Brits are about their favourite pastry! "We took the process very seriously, making this creation the same way we make all our figures at the attraction. "We're delighted to honour its iconic status with a history-making feat - the first time an individual food item has had the honour of having its figure at Madame Tussauds London. "We can't wait for guests to be stopped in the tracks at the life-like sausage roll - just in time for National Sausage Roll Day." Rosin Currie, CEO at Greggs, added: 'We're thrilled that Madame Tussauds London has chosen to honour the Greggs Sausage Roll in such a unique and iconic way. "It's a true celebration of a national favourite, and we couldn't think of a more fitting tribute in the lead-up to National Sausage Roll Day. "Seeing our Sausage Roll receive the celebrity treatment is a proud and slightly surreal moment for all of us at Greggs.'
