Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru Set Dry Days On These Dates: Check Full List

Last Updated: Major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru have announced dry days during festival season. Liquor sales will be banned on Independence Day, Janmashtami, and Ganesh Chaturthi. As the festival season kicks off in August, authorities in major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru have released a list of dry days. On these days, all bars, pubs, restaurants, wine stores, and liquor shops across the cities will be closed. The restriction will be imposed on a 24-hour basis. Dry Days In Delhi The Delhi administration has scheduled consecutive dry days this week, closing all liquor shops on Independence Day and Janmashtami. The liquor vends in different licence categories were closed on August 15 for Independence Day and will be closed on August 16 for Janmasthami, Hindustan Times quoted an order issued by the Delhi government's excise department as saying. The order said that in addition, all liquor vends, bars, restaurants, hotels, and clubs will remain closed on Independence Day and on October 2, Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary. Dry Days In Mumbai Apart from 15 August, the state excise department has marked multiple days when the sale of alcohol will be prohibited in Mumbai. All liquor shops, bars, pubs, and wine stores remained closed on 15 August for Independence Day and will be closed on 16 August for Janmashtami, the celebration of Lord Krishna's birth. The state has marked a strict ban on the sale of alcohol in Mumbai on 27 August and 6 September, the first and last days of Ganesh Chaturthi. During the 10-day grand festival, concluding with Anant Chaturdashi (Visarjan Day) on 6 September, dry days could be enforced on 5 September due to public processions and large gatherings. If needed, restrictions may apply throughout the entire festival, with a complete ban on the sale of alcohol by licensed shops, restaurants, or bars. However, there is no bar on private consumption, but purchasing alcohol on these days will not be possible. Dry Days In Bengaluru The Bengaluru administration imposed two consecutive dry days this week. Liquor was banned on 15 August for Independence Day and will again be banned on 16 August for Janmashtami. On these two days, there will be a 48-hour restriction on the sale of alcohol through licensed vendors, restaurants, or bars across the city. Additionally, Ganesh Chaturthi on 27 August is expected to be a dry day in Bengaluru. Like Mumbai, the administration may also enforce extra restrictions during the immersion celebrations on 6 September. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. India should position weddings, MICE as niche tourism segment: Govt official

Kochi, Aug 15 (PTI) India should focus on promoting weddings and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) as a niche tourism segment rather than grouping it under general tourism development, a senior Union Tourism Ministry official said here on Friday. Delivering the keynote address at what was claimed to be the country's first Wedding and MICE conclave, Additional Secretary and Director General of Tourism Suman Billa said Kerala had strong potential to emerge as a leading venue in this category, according to a government release. He suggested that the wedding and MICE segment should ideally have separate microsites on the country's leading tourism portals to bring its immense scope into sharper focus, the release said. The three-day conclave, which began here on Thursday evening, is being organised by the Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) Society in association with the state tourism department. Billa said Kerala stood to benefit greatly from the sector's growth due to its inherent advantages. 'The state has excellent ambience and infrastructure, and the need of the hour is convergence by linking the dots to usher in a synergy," he was quoted as saying. He claimed Kerala had a potential business opportunity worth Rs 1 lakh crore in wedding and MICE tourism. Billa also praised the state government's decision to go beyond conventional tourism strategies and diversify into wedding and MICE. Kerala's green-friendly policies and its widely acclaimed Responsible Tourism model have helped the state renew its reputation as a global destination, he said. He further said the recent US imposition of steeper tariffs on India was unlikely to affect its status as the world's fastest-growing major economy. The summit has attracted over 675 buyers, including 65 from abroad, representing countries such as the UAE, UK, USA, Germany, Australia, and Brazil. Seventy-five exhibition stalls have been set up for sellers. PTI HMP SSK view comments First Published: August 15, 2025, 21:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. GST Rejig Plan: Food Items, Medicines, Phones, Insurance—What Is Likely To Get Cheaper?

The proposal also signals that some goods will become significantly costlier India is on the brink of a major GST overhaul that promises to simplify the tax structure and significantly alter the cost of goods and services for millions of consumers. The finance ministry has reportedly put forward a proposal to the GST Council to move from the existing four-slab system to a two-slab model, with rates of 5% and 18%. This strategic shift is designed to make the tax system more straightforward and, as promised by the Prime Minister, to provide a 'Diwali bonanza" to citizens. Cheaper: Processed food, phones Under the new proposal, a vast majority of items used by the common person are slated to become cheaper. The plan outlines that 99% of commodities currently taxed at 12% would be shifted to the lower 5% bracket. This change is expected to bring down the prices of a wide range of goods, including processed food items like butter, ghee, and packaged fruit juices. Other products, such as mobile phones, which are essential for students and the aspirational middle class, are also likely to see a rate reduction from 12% to 5%. This move would not only make these items more accessible but also boost consumption, which the government believes will fuel higher GDP growth. For sectors that are crucial to rural livelihoods, such as handicrafts and certain agricultural equipment, the new structure could mean much-needed financial relief. Essential services like medicines, health, and insurance premiums, which are currently taxed at higher rates, are also expected to see a reduction, making them more affordable for a wider population. The simplified tax structure is also intended to streamline business operations for traders and MSMEs, with promises of benefits like quick refunds and easier calculations. 'Sin tax' items, luxury goods to get costlier While many items are poised to get cheaper, the proposal also signals that some goods will become significantly costlier. The new plan introduces a 'special rate" of 40% for a select few 'sin items" and luxury goods, as an additional punitive tax. These products, which are considered injurious to health or are non-essential, include tobacco, cigarettes, and pan masala. By moving these items to a much higher tax slab, the government aims to curb their consumption and generate higher revenue from them, thereby offsetting any potential revenue loss from the rate rationalisation on other goods. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
