US, UAE agree to establish major defense partnership

Yemen Online19-05-2025
The US and UAE have agreed to establish a major defense partnership, Washington and Abu Dhabi announced on Monday.
This follows the designation of the UAE as a major defense partner by the Biden administration last year.
The letter of intent was signed between the UAE's Minister of State for Defense Affairs, Mohammed Mubarak Al Mazrouei, and Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth last week.
'This LOI represents a shared commitment to develop a structured roadmap that will guide enhanced military-to-military cooperation, joint capability development, and long-term defense alignment between the two nations,' the joint statement read.
'The two sides will explore a phased framework for advancing bilateral force readiness, interoperability, and innovation-driven collaboration.'
Hegseth also announced a strategic initiative between the US Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and the UAE's Tawazun Council to deepen ties in defense innovation, increase joint research and expand industrial and investment partnerships across the defense sectors of both countries.
Separately, the UAE was welcomed into the US National Guard State Partnership Program (SPP) through a partnership with the Texas National Guard.
This will increase military modernization efforts and enhance cooperation in integrated air and missile defense, cybersecurity, disaster response, and operational planning, according to the statement.
'The designation of the UAE as a Major Defense Partner reflects a decades-long relationship anchored in mutual trust, shared objectives, and a common commitment to regional and global security,' the statement said.

Washington Withdraws 700 Marines Deployed in Los Angeles

Washington - Saba: The U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) announced the withdrawal of 700 U.S. Marines from Los Angeles, thus ending a controversial deployment of these forces in the city. Former President Donald Trump had ordered the deployment of thousands of National Guard members and hundreds of Marines to Los Angeles last month to confront protests over arrests carried out by federal immigration authorities — a move opposed by city officials and California's Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement last night that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth 'directed the redeployment of the 700 Marines, whose presence sent a clear message: lawlessness will not be tolerated.' He added, 'Their swift response, steady discipline, and visible presence played a key role in restoring order and upholding the rule of law.' For her part, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced the Marines' withdrawal on the 'X' platform, calling it 'another victory' for the city and stating that the deployment of the forces had been 'unnecessary.' The Marines' withdrawal comes after the Pentagon announced last week that Hegseth had ordered the withdrawal of 2,000 National Guard personnel from Los Angeles, reducing the overall military presence in the city by nearly half. US Analysts Urge Washington to Engage South Yemen to Counter Houthi Threat

Aden — A growing chorus of American defense analysts and foreign policy experts is calling on the Biden administration to recalibrate its strategy in Yemen by engaging directly with southern Yemeni factions, particularly the Southern Transitional Council (STC), to help resolve the enduring Houthi insurgency. According to a recent report published by Stars and Stripes, the failure of past military campaigns to decisively weaken the Iran-backed Houthi movement has prompted calls for a regional realignment. Advocates argue that southern forces possess territorial control, military discipline, and popular legitimacy that could be leveraged to contain Houthi expansion and restore stability. The STC, controls key areas including Aden, Mukalla, and strategic ports along the Gulf of Aden. Experts suggest that bolstering these forces could create a counterbalance to Houthi dominance in the north, especially as the Houthis continue to launch drone and missile attacks on Red Sea shipping and Israeli targets. The proposal remains controversial, given the STC's separatist ambitions and the complex web of alliances in Yemen. However, proponents argue that realpolitik demands a shift from idealistic unity frameworks to pragmatic partnerships that reflect realities on the ground.

Houthi Attack on Israel Prompts Huckabee Call for US Airstrike in Yemen

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee called for American airstrikes on Yemen after Israeli defenses shot down a missile fired by Houthi fighters toward Jerusalem late Tuesday. The interception was the first of its kind since the US-led bombing campaign against Iran began last month. 'We thought we were done with missiles coming to Israel, but Houthis just lit one up over us in Israel,' Huckabee wrote on social media. 'Maybe those B-2 bombers need to visit Yemen!' His remarks came a little over a week after US B-2 stealth bombers carried out Operation Midnight Hammer, a strike that President Donald Trump hailed as a 'historic military success,' declaring the targeted Iranian nuclear facilities 'completely obliterated.' Pentagon officials said more than 30 tons of munitions were dropped in the raid, which relied on the Air Force's small fleet of 20 B-2s. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz signaled that Yemen could be next in line. 'The law of Yemen is the law of Tehran,' he warned. 'After we strike the head of the serpent in Tehran, we will also strike the tail of the serpent in Yemen.' Tension with Yemen resurfaced only weeks after Washington reached a short-lived arrangement with the Houthis: the group agreed to stop attacking US naval vessels in return for a pause in American strikes on Houthi positions. Tuesday's launch appears to have unraveled that deal. Although Huckabee has stressed that he does not set policy, his fiery post points to growing pressure within the US-Israel partnership to hit Iranian-backed groups harder across the region.
