Hoffman Estates man attacked 87-year-old neighbor, police say
A Hoffman Estates man was accused of attempted murder in an alleged attack on his 87-year-old neighbor.
Police found the victim with multiple cuts, including to his neck.
It was unclear what led to the alleged atttack.
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - A Hoffman Estates man was charged with attempted murder in connection with an attack on his 87-year-old neighbor on Thursday afternoon.
Michael Fleming, 35, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery of a victim over the age of 60, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, according to Hoffman Estates police.
What we know
Around 3:39 p.m. on Friday, police responded to the 3500 block of Hillside Court for a report of a fight.
Officers arrived and found an 87-year-old man with apparent cuts to his body, including the throat.
The 911 caller told authorities that the other man involved in the fight had fled the scene.
Before the victim was taken to Lutheran General Hospital, he told officers the name of the alleged suspect.
A short time later, police found the suspect near Otis Road in Barrington Hills and arrested him without incident, and identified him as Fleming.
The suspect is a known acquaintance of the victim.
Cook County prosecutors approved charges against Fleming. Police said the alleged attack appeared to be isolated and there was no immediate danger to the public.

Pirro also reportedly told lawyer Sidney Powell, who later pleaded guilty in a scheme to overturn Trump's 2020 election loss in Georgia, to 'Keep fighting' in a November 2020 text message shortly after Election Day. Smartmatic argues Pirro agreed the 2020 election was 'fair and free' in a deposition. 'I believe that there's been no showing that Smartmatic engaged in any problems,' she said, according to court documents. Fox News told The Independent Tuesday, 'The evidence shows that Smartmatic's business and reputation were badly suffering long before any claims by President Trump's lawyers on Fox News and that Smartmatic grossly inflated its damage claims to generate headlines and chill free speech. 'Now, in the aftermath of Smartmatic's executives getting indicted for bribery charges, we are eager and ready to continue defending our press freedoms.' The Independent has also reached out to Pirro's D.C. office and the White House for comment. Fox News has already agreed to pay Dominion Voting Systems $787.5 million in a defamation lawsuit over its post-2020 election coverage. Dominion also sued another right-leaning network, Newsmax, for false claims it had rigged the election, leading to a $67 million settlement. Newsmax agreed to pay Smartmatic $40 million in a similar defamation suit.

Washington County bartender recounts how biker group "brutally and savagely" beat patron
Employees at a Washington County bar are on edge after they were attacked by a big group of bikers. The violent scene unfolded at Forty Bar and Grille in Washington County over the weekend. The bar's owner said she believes it was a targeted attack, and sources said the victim may have been in a different biker group. "They had clubs, bats, knives, guns, I'm assuming," bartender Julia Quartur said. Quartur recounts the terrifying moments she witnessed early Sunday morning. She said dozens of motorcycle club members known as the War Dogs targeted one of the bar's regulars, beating him under this booth. "They all just jumped on him and beat him so brutally and savagely. Like probably 15, 20 of them. They beat him until he literally was not moving on the ground," Quartur said. "What did you do?" KDKA-TV's Jen Borrasso asked. "I'm screaming, me and my other bartender behind the bar, screaming on the top of our lungs to stop, stop, please stop, and just feeling absolutely helpless," she said. Quartur says she, her coworkers and a handful of customers were so scared, they scrambled for shelter in the basement. "I almost felt just frozen in fear and I've never had such a sense of helplessness in my entire life," she said. "They just started destroying everything on the back deck, throwing bottles, throwing chairs through the doors, shattered everything," she added. At one point, sources said gunshots were fired outside of the bar. No one was hit. The bar's co-owner, Cheyenne Dennison, called 911 and rushed to help her employees. "I'm screaming for (the bartenders), trying to get their attention, I'm screaming for them to get out of here," Dennison said. "They finally came creeping up the steps. I knew they were OK. That was my number one thing coming here, is I wanted to make sure my employees were OK," she added. Dennison says the motorcyle club members were gone when police arrived, and so was the victim. "I don't know what caused this. I don't know what would cause anybody to act the way they did," she said. State police are investigating. That attack is prompting local leaders to cancel an upcoming motorcycle event in the nearby city of Washington. Rally on Main had been scheduled for Saturday. City leaders say that will no longer happen, but they plan to bring it back next year.

Over 100 car break-ins overnight Monday, despite this police say they are making progress
Minneapolis Police Department says three juveniles are in custody in connection with the city's car break-in spree. Over 100 break-ins were reported overnight throughout Minneapolis and its suburbs. This marks roughly 580 reported break-ins since July 15. On Tuesday when the sun came up near 41st and Vincent. "You can't really drive when they're breaking the windows of your cars," said Will Ackerman, who lives in Minneapolis' Linden Hills neighborhood. It's clean up time for both Will Ackerman and his grandma across the street. "This is a lot of cars, a lot of damage," said his grandma Berde Ackerman. Minneapolis Police say over 100 cars were broken into overnight Monday into Tuesday across town and several suburbs. That brings the total to more than 580 since July 15th, when MPD says the spree began. "Stopping this problem has been one of our top priorities," said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara. "We have recovered two stolen vehicles earlier today we believe were involved in some of the damage, and we have three juveniles now in custody." Minneapolis Police say they're still looking for others involved in the hundreds of break-ins, the problem is expanding. Bloomington was hit in July with 40 cars smashed in the Great Wolf Lodge parking lot. Police in Edina arrested six people in connection with similar crimes earlier. But catching the prowlers is only part of the solution. Prosecuting presents another problem. "In order to have a case against someone for one particular vehicle, we have ve to be able to prove a specific person damaged a specific vehicle," O'Hara added. Making investigations into each and every report, like Berde Ackerman's, extremely labor intensive. "It happens everywhere, but I didn't think it wouldn't happen here," said Ackerman. Chief O'Hara says they believe separate juvenile groups are causing the spree. He asks you to call 911 if you see or hear something right away. The quicker they respond, the easier it is for them to catch the suspects.
