BJP's Nationwide ‘Har Ghar Tiranga' Drive Ahead Of Independence Day: What Is Planned
A circular issued by BJP national general secretary Arun Singh outlined the activities planned between August 10 and 15 across all states and districts
In the run-up to the 79th Independence Day, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced an extensive patriotic campaign titled 'Har Ghar Tiranga–Tiranga Yatra", aimed at reinforcing national unity and celebrating India's recent counter-terror success under Operation Sindoor. A circular issued by BJP national general secretary Arun Singh outlined the activities planned between August 10 and 15 across all states and districts.
Highlighting the campaign's significance, the circular draws from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address in Parliament, where he declared the ongoing monsoon session as 'India's victory celebration", commemorating the decisive offensive under Operation Sindoor. The Prime Minister underscored the operation as a symbol of the valour of India's armed forces and the nation's resolve to dismantle terrorism at its roots.
Between August 13 and 15, party workers are instructed to ensure the Indian flag is hoisted at every home and establishment. Notably, the circular emphasises that wherever possible, hoisting should be done by children, instilling a sense of pride and connection among the younger generation. On the evening of August 15, the flag must be respectfully lowered as per protocol.
A major cleanliness drive will be undertaken from August 12 to 14 at memorials, war monuments, and freedom struggle sites, followed by floral tributes. Special attention will be paid to honouring war veterans, martyrs, and families of police personnel who laid down their lives in the service of the nation.
Senior leaders and workers in border states have been directed to visit border posts with prior permission to honour soldiers stationed there.
On August 14, the party will observe Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas (Partition Horrors Remembrance Day) with silent marches, exhibitions, hall meetings, and outreach to families affected by the 1947 partition.
The circular mandates the formation of state-level committees and completion of preparatory meetings at all levels by August 8. A dedicated team under BJP national general secretary Sunil Bansal will coordinate the programme nationwide, with senior leaders including K Surendran, VD Sharma, and Sadanand Shet Tanavade leading the effort.
To ensure transparency and documentation, party workers are required to upload event details and images on the NaMo App and Saral Portal.
The campaign, BJP leaders say, is not just about national pride but also a collective reaffirmation of India's sovereignty, unity, and unbreakable spirit.

Trump's 50% tariffs fail to hit $30 bn of Indian exports: Pharma, smartphones exempted
Despite US President Donald Trump's decision to double tariffs on Indian goods to 50% from August 6, a major chunk of Indian exports worth nearly $30 billion remains untouched for now. Key sectors like pharmaceuticals and electronics including smartphones and semiconductors continue to enjoy exemptions under a carve-out list that shields them from higher duties. The tariff hike, justified by the Trump administration as a response to India's continued procurement of Russian energy and arms is expected to impact India's labour-intensive export segments. However, shipments of critical products such as medicines, mobile phones and energy supplies have been spared at least for the moment. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In FY25, India exported pharmaceuticals and electronics worth $10.5 billion and $14.6 billion respectively to the US, together accounting for over 29% of its total exports to America which stood at $86.5 billion. Interestingly, India's petroleum exports amounting to $4.09 billion have also been excluded from the latest tariffs due to their placement in the energy exemption list. These high-value categories had previously escaped the initial 25% tariff announced on July 30 as well. While these exemptions offer temporary relief, uncertainty remains. Trump has warned of tariffs going as high as 250% on foreign-manufactured pharmaceuticals and the status of smartphones may shift depending on future policy decisions. The executive order signed on August 6 clarified that all goods currently listed under exemptions would continue to receive preferential access to the US market at lower or zero tariffs. The original 25% tariff was introduced after talks to finalise a limited trade deal between the two countries collapsed. That move, which takes effect on August 7, paved the way for this latest escalation. India and the US are still working towards concluding a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), targeted for finalisation by the end of the year.

Reforms in last 11 years led to transparent, sensitive, citizen-centric governance: PM Modi
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that sweeping reforms introduced by his government over the past 11 years have transformed India's governance model into one that is transparent, sensitive, and citizen-centric. Citing the success of the JAM (Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile) trinity, Modi said that the initiative had plugged massive leakages in welfare schemes and prevented the theft of over Rs 4.30 lakh crore that was allegedly being siphoned off through 10 lakh fake beneficiaries under previous regimes. "Approximately 10 crore beneficiaries listed under various schemes such as the ration card, gas subsidy, and scholarships were found to be nonexistent. These individuals, who never actually existed, were being used by previous governments to funnel money to middlemen. However, these 10 crore fake names have now been removed from the list of beneficiaries by the incumbent government. According to an estimate, this cleanup has resulted in savings of over Rs 4.30 lakh crore, which would have otherwise gone into the wrong hands. Imagine theft of Rs 4.30 lakh crore. Now, this amount is being used for the development of this country," the prime minister said. PM Modi was speaking at an event at Kartavya Path after inaugurating Kartavya Bhavan (Common Central Secretariat Building) 3, the first of the 10 state-of-the-art Central government office complexes planned as part of the Central Vista redevelopment plan. These blocks will house offices of all ministries and associated departments, presently functioning from Shastri Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan, Udyog Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, North and South Blocks and other buildings located at different locations.

'Economic blackmail': Rahul Gandhi slams Trump's 50 per cent tariff on India
NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said US President Donald Trump's 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods is "economic blackmail" to bully India into an unfair trade deal. Soon after Trump announced a penalty of another 25 per cent on India for buying Russian oil, the former Congress president said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should not let Indian interests be overridden. "Trump's 50% tariff is economic blackmail - an attempt to bully India into an unfair trade deal. "PM Modi better not let his weakness override the interests of the Indian people," Gandhi said in a post on X.
