Awang Tengah: Sarawak's Q1 2025 timber exports reach RM625 mln, plywood leads
The Second Natural Resources and Urban Development Minister said this marked an increase of four per cent compared to RM305 million for the same period last year.
He said Japan remained the top importer with RM359 million, followed by India with RM85 million, Middle Eastern countries (RM77 million), China (RM21 million) and the Philippines (RM20 million).
'In line with technological developments, the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) is also working closely with the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) through the TimbeReality.my platform to promote and market timber products through digital platforms.
'To strengthen STIDC's regulatory role, the State Cabinet has approved the Sarawak Timber Industry (Licensing) Regulations 2025.
'In this regard, STIDC has developed the Timber Industry Regulatory and Compliance System (TRACE) to improve service efficiency in line with digital transformation initiatives,' he said in his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting today.
He also said that STIDC is targeting no less than 30,000 hectares for bamboo cultivation by 2030.
'As of April 2025, approximately 4,900 hectares of area had been planted by 17 commercial companies and 200 participants from the community.
'This bamboo yield is important as an alternative source of raw materials,' he said.
Awang Tengah said STIDC had also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last year with the Malaysian Community Care Foundation Resources Sdn Bhd, Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad, Pertama Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd and the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) targeting a bamboo planting area of 10,000 hectares.
'To further strengthen this industry, several local and international companies have already shown interest in investing in the downstream industry to produce high-value bamboo-based products such as tissue paper, packaging materials, textiles and biochar,' he said.

Pakistan to get first US oil shipment as Cnergyico seals import deal
KARACHI/SINGAPORE: Pakistan's largest refiner Cnergyico will import one million barrels of oil from Vitol in October, its vice chairman Usama Qureshi told Reuters on Friday, marking the country's first-ever purchase of US crude following a landmark trade deal. The West Texas Intermediate light crude cargo will be loaded from Houston this month and is expected to arrive in Karachi in the second half of October, Qureshi said. "This is a test spot cargo under our umbrella term agreement with Vitol. If it is commercially viable and available, we could import at least one cargo per month," he said, adding that the shipment was not meant for resale. The deal follows months of multiple negotiations which first began in April, he said, after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose 29 per cent tariffs on imports from Pakistan. Qureshi said Pakistan's finance and petroleum ministries encouraged local refineries to explore US crude imports after the April tariff announcement. Vitol did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside of office hours. On Thursday, Pakistan hailed a trade deal struck with the US, its top export market, and said the agreement would increase investments. The White House said on Thursday the US will charge a 19 per cent tariff on imports from Pakistan. A key China ally, Pakistan has been warming up to Trump after he threatened tariffs. It has credited US diplomatic intervention for ending recent hostilities with neighbouring India and nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. Oil is Pakistan's biggest import item and its shipments were valued at US$11.3 billion in the year ended June 30, 2025, accounting for nearly a fifth of the country's total import bill. The import deal will help Pakistan diversify its crude sourcing and reduce reliance on Middle Eastern suppliers, who account for nearly all of its oil imports. "Gross refining margin is on par with Gulf grades, and no blending or refinery tweaks are required," Qureshi said. Cnergyico can process 156,000 barrels of crude per day and operates the country's only single-point mooring terminal near Karachi, enabling it to handle large tankers unlike other refiners in Pakistan. The company plans to install a second offshore terminal to allow larger or more frequent shipments, and to upgrade its refinery over the next five to six years, Qureshi said. The refiner, which has been operating at an average refinery run rate of 30 to 35 per cent due to tepid local demand, is betting on growth in demand for oil products. "We expect run rates to rise as domestic demand strengthens and local production is prioritised over imported fuels," Qureshi said. Trump said on Wednesday the US would also cooperate with Pakistan to develop the South Asian country's "massive oil reserves", without providing further details.

Global passenger demand grows 2.6% in June 2025, says IATA
KUALA LUMPUR: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported a 2.6 per cent increase in global passenger demand for June 2025, marking a slower growth rate compared to previous months. The aviation body attributed the deceleration to disruptions caused by military conflicts in the Middle East. IATA Director General Willie Walsh noted that while demand growth lagged behind the 3.4 per cent expansion in capacity, load factors remained robust at 84.5 per cent globally. 'Load factors dipped slightly by 0.6 percentage points from record highs but are still very strong,' he said. A regional breakdown revealed mixed performance across international markets. Asia-Pacific airlines led with a 7.2 per cent year-on-year demand increase, though capacity growth slightly outpaced demand at 7.5 per cent. Europe saw a 2.8 per cent rise in demand, while North America experienced a 0.3 per cent decline. Middle Eastern carriers recorded a 0.4 per cent drop in demand, with load factors at 78.7 per cent. Walsh added that August schedules indicate modest capacity growth of 1.8 per cent, suggesting load factors will remain near historic highs during the northern summer. - Bernama
