Schwarber hits his 42nd homer in a 4-run 8th inning as the Phillies rallied past the Reds 4-1
Schwarber's 42nd homer moved him past Shohei Ohtani and into the NL lead. The Dodgers faced the Angels later Monday night. Seattle's Cal Raleigh leads the AL and MLB with 45 homers. Schwarber has 97 RBIs this season.
Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott (8-3) allowed only three hits through seven innings. But, with two outs in the eighth, he allowed RBI doubles by Weston Wilson and Trea Turner. Schwarber followed with a two-run shot off Tony Santillan to complete the rally.
Abbott bounced back after a rough outing on Wednesday when he allowed four earned runs and a pair of homers in a 6-1 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Against the Phillies, he retired the first 12 batters he faced before J.T. Realmuto doubled leading off the fifth.
The Reds went ahead 1-0 when TJ Friedl doubled and scored on Gavin Lux's single in the first. It was the only run allowed by Phillies starter Taijuan Walker in his six innings.
Orion Kerkering retired the Reds in order in the ninth for his third save in seven chances. Jordan Romano (2-4) earned the victory for Philadelphia, which moved six games ahead of the idle New York Mets in the division.
With one out in the seventh, Reds right fielder Noelvi Marte prevented the tying run from scoring when he threw out Bryce Harper attempting to score from third on Nick Castellano's fly ball.

LONDON (AP) — The Premier League's top official called for patience Wednesday while the seismic legal case involving Manchester City drags on into another season. City was charged by the league in February 2023 with more than 100 financial breaches, including providing misleading information about its sources of income. The case was heard by an independent commission between September and December last year but no verdict has been reached. Punishment could be as extreme as expulsion from the top flight. City has always denied the charges. The issue hangs over the start of another Premier League campaign, with the 2025-26 season starting Friday. But Richard Masters, the competition's chief executive, reiterated the league has no control or say over the timings. Asked in an interview with British broadcaster Sky Sports News why the league could not hurry the process along, Masters said: 'I can't answer that specific question. All I can tell you about is the system and how it works. 'I mean, it's an independent judiciary, essentially. So once the allegations, the charge, has been put forward, they go before an independent panel, which is independently selected, and they are then in charge of the process and its timings. They hear the case, they decide the outcome, and we have no influence over that, over it or its timing. That's right from an independence point of view." 'I just have to wait,' he said, "and legal processes rarely take less time than you anticipated, but we have to be patient.' Taking the Premier League abroad The Spanish league has recently approved a request for a match, between Villarreal and Barcelona, to be played in the United States in December and Masters was asked whether the Premier League had any similar desire to take a game abroad. Masters said the need has lessened. 'We did look at the '39th game' way back when, with lots of controversy. I recall that very clearly," Masters said of a controversial proposal made back in 2008 of having an extra round of matches played overseas. 'Our objective at the time, when thinking about it, was to help grow the Premier League around the world. 'And we've been able to do that through different means, through brilliant broadcast partnerships, through digital technology, investing in other areas, like the Summer Series tournament we've just had in the U.S., and now the Premier League is a genuinely global league. There are billions of people who will be tuning in over the course of the next next nine months to watch Premier League action. So we've achieved that objective by different means, that necessity has dissipated.'

Scottie Scheffler to use a different caddie at BMW Championship as regular deals with family matter
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler is going with a PGA Tour caddie for the BMW Championship as his regular looper, Ted Scott, deals with a family emergency at home in Louisiana. Scott had to leave immediately after the third round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and Scheffler used longtime friend Brad Payne from the College Golf Fellowship. This week he has turned to Michael Cromie. He usually works for Chris Kirk, who missed qualifying for the BMW Championship by one shot. 'He works really hard and does a good job. We're both learning a new golf course this week, so it's been fun,' Scheffler said. The family matter involving Scott was kept private, though Scheffler said he has spoken to him a couple of times and the family was in good spirits. 'I think Ted's where he needs to be right now, and I think caddying is probably the last thing on his mind, as it should be,' Scheffler said. Scheffler finished one shot out of a playoff last week at the TPC Southwind. He remains the No. 1 seed in the FedEx Cup at the BMW Championship and already is assured of a $5 million bonus for staying at the top going into the FedEx Cup finale next week at East Lake. Scheffler said Cromie was learning a lot of the minutiae that often goes unnoticed by spectators, such as when he likes to snack and how often to drink, and how he likes to get the yardage and other conditions communicated to him. There's also the matter of getting yardages from tee-to-green. 'Brad did a great job stepping in, but Brad is a friend, he's not a professional caddie,' Scheffler said. "I think when you have a professional on the bag, it's a bit different. It's not that I don't trust Brad to do the numbers. It was just something that I think both of us probably thought it was a good idea to be double-checking each other. "Going into this week, it will be kind of more of a normal routine for me in terms of preparation over the shot and stuff like that," he said. 'It's nice for me to be able to walk up to the ball, see the shot that I can imagine hitting, and then when the numbers come, we start trying to really dial it in.'

Keegan Bradley as a playing captain? Rory McIlroy thinks the Ryder Cup is too big for that now
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Rory McIlroy believes the Ryder Cup has become too big of an event for a captain to play in the matches and said Wednesday he already shot down the idea when approached about doing it himself someday. But he is no less fascinated by the conundrum facing U.S. captain Keegan Bradley. 'I definitely think he's one of the best 12 American players right now,' McIlroy said Wednesday ahead of the BMW Championship. 'That's why everyone is so interested and it's such a compelling case. I'm just as interested as everyone else to see how it all plays out.' That includes Bradley, who is no ordinary Ryder Cup captain. He is 39, the youngest U.S. captain since Arnold Palmer at age 34 in 1963. He also is the defending champion of the BMW Championship, one of his two PGA Tour titles over the last year that has put him in position to make the team on his own. He would have to win at Caves Valley to earn one of six automatic spots. Then, he makes six captain's picks after next week's Tour Championship. The Ryder Cup is Sept. 26-28 at Bethpage Black. 'I can truly sit here right now and say I don't know what's going to happen,' Bradley said. 'I have to look at myself just like any other player trying to make the team.' The Ryder Cup hasn't had a playing captain since Palmer at East Lake 62 years ago, when the King was still in his prime (he won the Masters the following year) and matches were not much of a competition against players from only Britain and Ireland. Bradley is No. 10 in the Ryder Cup standings. He is No. 12 in the world, with only six other Americans ranked ahead of him. He also is No. 14 in the FedEx Cup, with only eight other Americans ahead on that list. 'If I was the captain, I'd pick Keegan. I think he's played great,' Patrick Cantlay said. Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world who long ago clinched his spot on another American team, said Bradley could only add to what he considers a strong team. 'If that's something that Keegan wants to be part of the team and wants to play, I think he's a guy we'd all love to have on the team,' Scheffler said. McIlroy played with him for two days in the Travelers Championship — Bradley went on to win that week — and said at the time, 'If he doesn't finish in the top six and he doesn't pick himself, then you could say America aren't going with their very best.' Even so, McIlroy has his doubts. The Ryder Cup has become the largest spectacle in golf. Bradley is on calls every week for planning and other logistics that are involved. There are media responsibilities daily during the Ryder Cup. There are lineups to consider. 'You think about the extra media that a captain has to do, you think about the extra meetings that the captains have to do with the vice captains, with the PGA of America, preparing your speech for the opening ceremony,' McIlroy said. "There's a lot of things that people don't see that the captain does the week of the Ryder Cup, especially now that the Ryder Cup has become so big. 'If you'd have said it 20 years ago, I'd say, yeah, it was probably possible to do,' he said. 'But how big of a spectacle and everything that's on the line in a Ryder Cup now, I just think it would be a very difficult position to be in.' He also suggested Bradley probably would be limited to playing one of the two sessions on Friday and Saturday, which might hurt the U.S. team if Bradley had a hot hand that week. Tiger Woods was playing captain at the 2019 Presidents Cup — far less intense, and an event the Americans haven't lost since 1998 — and played only one session a day at Royal Melbourne. 'There's a lot of different things that go into it, and that's why I think ... look, it's just my opinion, but I think it would just be very difficult to do.' Bradley has considered all this, too. He said ultimately he would look at himself the way he does any other potential pick, with advice from his assistant captains and the six players who automatically qualify. 'He might be right,' Bradley said of McIlroy's opinion. 'We don't know. No one knows. Yeah, like everybody's telling me to start the year that a player can't be captain and have a good year. For me, I feel like this is one of my best years that I've ever had.' Bradley said he has spent a career leaning on people for advice on how to prepare for majors, dealing with the media, fulfilling corporate obligations, all elements of professional golf. 'In this instance, there's no one to call,' Bradley said. 'So nobody knows how this could work.' ___
