Contestants stay at a castle in the Scottish Highlands, where a few are secretly designated as 'Traitors' whose job is to 'murder' their fellow players, without getting caught.
The rest are 'Faithfuls' who try to detect who the 'Traitors' are and banish them from the game before they become their next victim.
The aim of the game is to survive to the final few players. If they are all 'Faithfuls', then the prize money is split among them, but if a 'Traitor' is left, they take it all.

Destination X star exposes off-camera moment after three contestants axed in huge twist
Three Destination X contestants were eliminated in the very first episode in a Traitors-style twist. Destination X contestant Chloe-Anne has opened up about the show's behind-the-scenes secrets after being eliminated not once but twice. The historian from Oxford was one of the 13 strangers battling it out to win £100,000 on Rob Brydon's thrilling series. The players travel across Europe and take part in challenges to try and find out where they are. In a Traitors-style twist, Chloe-Anne was eliminated from the competition in the very first episode, only to be brought back into the game earlier this week in a major twist. She, alongside players Ashvin and Claire, had failed to secure a spot in the game from the very first challenge, leaving them at risk and missing out on the first few days in the Destination X bus. After becoming a victim of the twist, which Chloe-Anne had predicted, having been a fan of Claudia Winkleman's murder mystery gameshow, too, the former contestant went on to reveal what happened behind the scenes. 'I remember right at the beginning at the airport, when we were all sitting down, I was with Dawn and Nick, and we were trying to work out who the other contestants were and who the actors were,' she began. 'There were 13 people we thought were contestants, and I remember turning to them and going, 'I've seen The Traitors, I know what's going to happen, three of us are about to go and then we're coming back'. I said that to them literally just before it happened, but obviously at that point, I was hoping it wasn't going to be me.' Unfortunately, Chloe-Anne was turned away from the first few challenges of the game, only for Rob to shock the other players by revealing their comeback. In the moments after being eliminated the first time, Chloe-Anne recalled feeling 'reasonably chilled' while Claire and Ashvin, who were in the same position, were 'fuming'. 'It was funny for me watching them, like Ash's face, when you see him walk off there you see it for a flash of a second, and his face is so funny in that moment, I've never seen anyone look so murderous in my life, and Claire was pacing up and down,' she recalled. Before returning to the game with the other players, Chloe-Anne said it felt like she was in a 'strange limbo', as they were following the Destination X coach around but didn't have full details on their location. She said, 'I think if I'd been on my own, it would have been really, really bizarre, but at least there were three of us in that same situation, so we bonded and created like a mini family.' She went on: 'We knew vaguely where we were the whole time, but we weren't given any of our belongings or anything like that, it was still very much like we were on our own separate little bus.' Unlike the rest of the players, Chloe-Anne did not have the chance to take part in the other challenges. She admitted feeling a little less prepared for the game, like she was going in 'blind.' 'Obviously, we didn't get to experience any of the gameplay or anything like that, so when we went back in, I felt that we were quite ill-prepared. Everyone else had the chance to put the X on the map three times; they knew what sort of things the clues were, they knew what they were looking out for,' she said. 'We were walking in blind in the same mindset we'd been in from the airport, and I think we were almost a little bit too chilled about it - I certainly was.' Reflecting on her exit after only a few days to actually experience Destination X, Chloe-Anne shared: 'I was really gutted to go again so soon. I feel like my journey on the show was like a game of Snakes and Ladders, and I kept thinking that I'd landed on a snake and gone out, and actually I found myself on a ladder and skipped straight to episode three.' 'I find my game was just continually losing to win until eventually I ran out of luck,' she admitted. 'On that last one, with putting the X on the map, if I had the chance to get that one right and do it again, or not necessarily right but just not go out, then I might have started to get the hang of the game a little bit more and get the feel for how it works, what clues we're looking for and how you piece those clues together.' Despite her short stint on Destination X, reflecting on her experience as a whole, Chloe-Anne said it was 'phenomenal' and a 'whirlwind', despite feeling 'gutted' by her exit. 'It was a very strange experience in that it both felt like it was a really, really long period of time and a really short period of time at the same time. 'It feels like a crazy amount happened in a really short period of time, but yeah, it was phenomenal, a completely unforgettable experience. 'It was like nothing else that is going to happen to me again, probably, or has ever happened before.'

Traitors winner locked in feud with co-star gives surprise update
The Traitors winner Meryl Williams has lifted the lid on her infamous feud with co-star Maddy Smedley, three years after they came to blows on the hit BBC show Meryl Williams has opened up on her infamous feud with co-star Maddy Smedley. The TV star emerged victorious from the first series of the BBC game show, which sees a group of Faithfuls work together to try to work out who the Traitors are and oust them from the castle, and shared just over £100,000 with two other finalists. But viewers will remember that she had numerous spats with fellow Faithful Maddy, and the fiery clashes over their different opinions made up much of latter half of the series that year. Eventually, Maddy was banished from the castle before the final and now Meryl has spoken out about her time on the show. During a chat on Saturday Night with Hayley Palmer, she said when asked about how she coped with the lying and deceit that came her way: "I think I am a good liar and people think that I'm trustworthy. I thought I wouldn't come across as intimidating but then obviously me and Maddy started having our own tiffs with one another. That started in episode six so [her plan] didn't work." It comes after Richard Osman reveals axed Ant and Dec show was 'expensive car crash'. But when she was asked how things between her and Maddy are now, she confirmed to Hayley: "We are friends now." Elsewhere in the chat with the presenter, Meryl, who stands at 4ft 2 as a result of her achondroplasia, spoke highly of the casting process when she applied to be on the programme in the first place. She added: "The one thing I'll take my hats off to The Traitors is the casting. They are incredible, the inclusion they get for both the celebs and our one is incredible. They have between 21 and 75, non-disabled, visually disabled, non-visually disabled - they just ticked all the boxes!" Prior to finding fame on the show, Maddy actually had experience as an actress but despite that, she later admitted that taking part in the programme was a shock to the system. Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, she admitted: "Yeah, I think it was very intense. I think everyone threw themselves into it. "So I realised I'm more of a method actor cause I felt like I was on death row, but then I think everything's heightened. So even you as a person, you're like, who was that? Or did I say that? And then each time I was like, oh my God. Very intense." The intensity of filming The Traitors may have helped in the long run, as Maddy's acting career has gone from strength to strength after leaving the show. She was a guest star in Call the Midwife last Christmas, playing a pregnant, poverty-stricken mother whose family is evicted from their home just as their neighbourhood is gripped by Hong Kong flu on the long-running BBC period medical drama - and fans were overjoyed to see her back on their screens.
