Teacher, author, critic, orator — M K Sanu, distinguished fixture in Kerala's intellectual landscape, dies at 98
Sanu, who made his mark in varied fields, leaves behind a distinguished legacy as an orator, author, literary critic, professor, and social worker.
Popularly known as Sanu 'Mash' — a term used to refer to male teachers — began his career as a school teacher in his home town of Alappuzha. A post-graduate degree holder in Malayalam, Sanu later taught at various government colleges. He spent the most number of years at Maharajas College in Ernakulam, where he made a name for himself and became loved by a generation of students.
After retiring as a professor in 1983, Sanu became the president of the Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sangham, a body of pro-Left writers.
In 1987, Sanu contested Assembly elections from the Ernakulam constituency as a Left-backed Independent candidate and won. Although he did not contest Assembly elections after that, Sanu remained a leading light for the progressive movements in Kerala.
He was a literary critic since 1960, and also authored around 80 books in various streams of literature. He left a lasting imprint as a biographer of notable figures such as social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, poet Changampuzha, novelist Vaikom Muhammed Basheer, critic M Govindan, social reformer Sahodaran Ayyappan and writer Kesari Balakrishna Pillai. The biographies were a window into the socio-political and cultural life of 20th-century Kerala. Sanu's writing was particularly influenced by the philosophy of Narayana Guru.
Sanu had been active in the literary world even in during last few years of his life. During the pandemic period, he authored several books, including the biography of Kesari Balakrishna Pillai.
He had won several accolades, including the Kerala Jyothi Award — the highest civilian award given by the state government.

Now, Delhi Assembly runs solely on sunlight, first in the country
The Delhi Legislative Assembly on Sunday became the first legislature in the country to be powered entirely by solar energy, following the commissioning of a 500-kilowatt rooftop solar power plant. Alongside this, the Assembly launched the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA), marking a shift towards paperless legislative functioning. The two initiatives were inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, who called the Assembly's transition a model for sustainable and digital governance. 'This is not just an infrastructure upgrade, but a shift in institutional values,' he said, adding that the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs will provide all possible assistance to the efforts and initiatives of the Delhi Legislative Assembly in this regard. Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta emphasised that the solarisation of the Assembly is a cornerstone in a broader institutional shift towards sustainable and digital transformation. 'The present Assembly building was constructed in 1912 and was home to the country's first Parliament,' Gupta said. Highlighting the balance between tradition and progress, he remarked, 'Virasat aur Vikaas saath chalega (Legacy and development go together).' Gupta added that the solar power plant, installed on the rooftop, is expected to reduce the Assembly's monthly electricity bill by around Rs 15 lakh, or approximately Rs 1.75 crore annually. The savings, he said, would be redirected to developmental work. It will also potentially generate surplus electricity through net metering. The NeVA platform, developed under the Centre's 'One Nation, One Application' initiative, will be fully implemented from the upcoming Monsoon Session. A successful trial run was conducted with MLAs ahead of the inauguration. The trial offered firsthand experience of the digital interface, which includes smart delegate units with microphones and voting panels, RFID/NFC access, multilingual support, real-time document access via iPads, an automated AV system with HD cameras, and a secure, power-backed networking environment. The House will also see the introduction of the Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Bill, 2025, by Education Minister Ashish Sood. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is also scheduled to table the Finance and Appropriation Accounts for 2023-24, which will present the financial position of the national capital. Gupta will also present two audit reports from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG): one on state finances for 2023-24 and a separate report on the welfare of building and construction workers in 2022-23. Sood, who also holds the Power portfolio, will also lay the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission's annual accounts and a notification on Green Energy Open Access regulations.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan courts controversy at Kerala Film Policy Conclave, Minister counters him
The closing ceremony of the Kerala Film Policy Conclave in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday witnessed some dramatic moments when veteran filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan made some controversial statements on the State government's project to promote filmmakers from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities and the one for women filmmakers, with Minister for Cultural Affairs Saji Cherian countering his assertions in his speech. 'The government is providing ₹1.5 crore for filmmakers from the SC/ST communities to make films. I told the Chief Minister that the government is paving the way for corruption through this, but nothing has changed. The intent behind the project is good, but they should be given at least three months of intensive training to make films. All the filmmakers who have made films under this project have complaints about it. They should be made aware that these are public funds. The amount should be reduced to ₹50 lakh. This money is not meant to make commercial films,' said Mr. Gopalakrishnan. Regarding a similar project for women filmmakers, he said that 'just because one is a woman, the government should not be giving money to make films.' They should also be provided training. They should know all the difficulties involved in making a film, he said. Mr. Cherian in his speech disagreed with Mr. Gopalakrishnan and said that even ₹1.5 crore was insufficient to make quality films these days, as most of the filmmakers under the project struggled due to funding issues. 'A rare opportunity' 'In the 98 years of Malayalam cinema's history, those from the SC/ST communities have not got a mainstream opportunity. This funding project is one of the best decisions this government has taken, because of which many new filmmakers from these communities were able to come forward. They were selected by a committee of experts through an intensive screening process,' he said. Mr. Gopalakrishnan's comments invited loud disapproval from a section of the audience, especially singer Pushpavathy. Later, speaking to the media, she said that Mr. Gopalakrishnan was attempting to torpedo a project to promote filmmakers from marginalised communities. 'People from the SC/ST communities have experienced oppression for centuries. Our forefathers have experienced slave-like conditions. It has just been decades since we started getting proper education. Any attempt to torpedo such projects has to be opposed. The government has clearly rejected his remarks,' she said. On IFFK Mr. Gopalakrishnan demanded that the delegate fee for the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) be raised to ensure that only those who were really interested in cinema got in. Recounting an event from the past, he said that 'a group of labourers from the Chala market barged into the theatre just to watch the adult content.' He also criticised the 2023 protest movement by the students of the K.R. Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science and Arts demanding the resignation of the institute's director Shankar Mohan for alleged caste discrimination, which also led to Mr. Gopalakrishnan's resignation as the institute's chairperson. He claimed that the institute was primed for take-off during his tenure, but no one knows the state of the institute now. Countering him, Mr. Cherian said that the institution was functioning effectively. The Minister also countered poet and filmmaker Sreekumaran Thampy's claim that nothing happened after the K. Hema Committee report was published. 'It is because the Hema committee report that this conclave is happening,' he said.
