WNBA Legend Tamika Catchings Sends Message After Kelsey Mitchell Breaks Her Fever Record
Wednesday night's trip to Barclays Center delivered another puzzle for the Indiana Fever, a 98–77 defeat to the New York Liberty.
Yet despite the loss, veteran guard Kelsey Mitchell rewrote the franchise record books.
Just under seven minutes into the first quarter, Mitchell rose to drill her 607th career 3-pointer, officially surpassing Hall of Famer Tamika Catchings as the Fever's all-time leader in made threes.
Catchings set the original 3-pointer benchmark over 15 seasons (2002-2016), retiring as a 10-time All-Star, seven-time All-WNBA First Team honoree, five-time Defensive Player of the Year, 2011 MVP and 2012 champion.
Shortly after the milestone moment, Catchings recorded a congratulatory video message for Mitchell that the Fever reshared on X.
"Records are meant to be broken," Catchings said. "But if there's anybody I'm glad to see break it, it's you. I'm super proud of you. Let's go, Fever. Get that dub."
Selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft out of Ohio State, Mitchell has spent eight seasons anchoring Indiana's backcourt.
She entered Wednesday's contest averaging a career-best 19.3 points per game while connecting on 36.4% of her long-range attempts.
Over 255 games in a Fever uniform, prior to Wednesday's matchup, Mitchell has averaged 17.0 points, 2.8 assists and 2.0 rebounds, earning three consecutive All-Star nods, a WNBA All-Rookie Team selection in 2018 and appearing twice in the league's 3-Point Contest.
In 2023, she was awarded the Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award for her leadership on and off the court, becoming just the fourth Fever player ever to do so, joining Natalie Achonwa (2020) and Catchings (2008, 2016).
As the team prepares for a second matchup with the Liberty on July 22 and its All-Star festivities at home, Mitchell's achievement serves as both a milestone and a motivator.

The expansive collection introduces New Era's evolved functional fandom approach to designing caps built "for all weather, not fair weather." This latest national campaign follows the announcement of New Era's expanded partnership with Allen, which granted an investment stake in the company and an appointment as "Director of Billustration." The commercial showcases the versatility of this year's NFL Sidelines Collection as well as the durability of individual caps designed to withstand the elements. The collection is made for the athletes who leave it all on the field and for fans who stand alongside their team, no matter the conditions. "I was ready to dive into this campaign and bring this collection to life, capturing what players and fans experience on gameday," said Allen. "Adapting to weather conditions on the field is critical for performance, and it's just as important that our gear adapts with us. Across the NFL, fans pack the stands and give everything they've got, regardless of the weather. This campaign celebrates the special connection we have with our fans — a bond that can't be rattled by triple-digit heat or feet of snow." "This collection is designed to meet the needs of players and fans from NFL Kickoff through Super Bowl Sunday and all year round. It complements the full NFL season of gameday experiences, and our longtime friend and partner Josh Allen really brought the Sidelines Collection to life," said Tim Shanahan, Sr. Director of Licensed Products at New Era. "We wanted to showcase how our products can withstand any weather elements and highlight our concept of a high-performance collection for everyone, whether you're calling the plays on the field or calling for other fans in your section to get loud." Collections Built For All Weather The two-part NFL Sidelines Collection features a Heat and a Cold Collection with intentional silhouette crossovers, ensuring that players and fans can find styles suited for any weather setting. Both collections include the 59FIFTY® Retro-Crown A-Frame, 9FORTY® M-Crown, 9SEVENTY®, and 9FIFTY® Split Panel. The Heat collection exclusively offers the 59FIFTY®, 9SEVENTY® Trucker, Visor, Runner, and Bucket caps, while the Cold collection uniquely includes the Cuff Beanie, Beanie, Camper Dog Ear, Pom Knit, and Balaclava silhouettes. This versatile collection offers silhouettes built for every weather condition. The warm-weather styles are crafted in lightweight, water-repellent materials with breathable mesh detailing and feature a premium quick-dry cushioned sweatband to help keep players and fans cool. The cold-weather silhouettes also feature a premium quick-dry cushion and are made from water-repellent materials, but are crafted with heavier, more insulated materials, like wool, yarn, and fleece. Each cap prominently features the team's logo, encased in a silicone patch, allowing the wearer to showcase the pride they have in their team. Campaign Captures Functional Fandom New Era created a spot that pushes creative boundaries, delivering something that is visually impactful and true to the brand. Set on the field and in a sports bar, Allen and fans are seen experiencing all weather elements. The Campaign launches today across multiple platforms, including ESPN, Prime Video, NBC Sports, Fubo, YouTube TV, and Hulu. 🚨 BREAKING: Charlotte complete free transfer for Harry Toffolo
Dean Smith's Charlotte have secured vital defensive reinforcements after completing a move for former Nottingham Forest left-back Harry Toffolo. [recent video] In a [confirmed length of contract] deal, the 29-year-old former England youth international joins up with the Crown amid some of their best form of the current 2025 MLS season, while questions remain surrounding their frailties at the back. Toffolo was previously a standout performer at the City Ground as the club re-established itself in the top flight of the English pyramid, with other postings across a journeyman career including Huddersfield Town, Lincoln City, Doncaster Rovers, Scunthorpe United, and Swindon Town. Charlotte, despite being on a current run of form that sees them reaching the MLS Cup playoffs as things stand, is posting one of the worst defensive records in the Eastern Conference. Toffolo's experience at the back, hopefully, will prove decisive for Smith and company. 📸 Alex Pantling - 2025 Getty Images
