Woeful White Sox have penguin throw out first pitch: ‘Can he start tomorrow?'

New York Post09-06-2025
Perhaps the solution to the White Sox pitching woes is a little penguin named Pepe.
Before Sunday's game against the Royals, Chicago trotted out Pepe to accompany Dr. Mike Adkesson, president and CEO of the Brookfield Zoo, for the ceremonial first pitch at Rate Field.
Pepe waddled out to the mound from the dugout while Adkesson tossed in a strike.

The White Sox (22-44) could've used the penguin's services during the game, though, as they went on to lose 7-5.

Naturally, fans on social media had a field day with the adorable moment.
'Major upgrade for the White Sox pitching staff!' remarked one fan on X.
'Can he start tomorrow?' asked another.

'Billy, this is Pepe. He's a penguin. He is one of the most undervalued birds in baseball. His defect is he can't fly,' cracked another, referencing the classic scene from Moneyball.

The White Sox have the ninth-worst team ERA in the majors with a 4.12, and the loss to Kansas City was a prime example of their woes on the mound — Chicago's bullpen gave up five runs in a brutal display.

Others couldn't help but poke fun at former NFL player Taylor Lewan, who went viral for his brutal first pitch at a Cardinals game last week.
'Nobody show this to @TaylorLewan77,' posted one fan on X, with dozens of others echoing a similar message.
The White Sox will look to take inspiration from Pepe as they attempt to climb out of a 20 ½-game hole in the AL Central starting with a three-game series in Houston against the Astros beginning on Tuesday night.

Tigers' A.J. Hinch makes scathing comments on Tommy Kahnle's struggles

Tigers' A.J. Hinch makes scathing comments on Tommy Kahnle's struggles originally appeared on The Sporting News The Detroit Tigers have been floundering a bit over the last month of baseball. After the All-Star break, the Tigers' lead in the AL Central has dropped to just 6.5 games over the Cleveland Guardians. While things have been a bit better as of late, with back-to-back series wins over the Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles Angels, there's one player whose struggles have led to a few of the team's losses during their rough last month. Evan Woodberry of MLive Media Group shared comments from Tigers manager A.J. Hinch on the struggles of Tommy Kahnle in recent weeks. Hinch's comments were scathing, and he didn't hold back in criticizing the veteran reliever. "He doesn't get to pitch for free," Hinch said of Kahnle. "The situation is going to dictate whether the innings are there for him. We try to get him in as low-leverage or low-pressure situations as possible so he can work on things... But we've got to compete on the field. This is not practice." It's a brutal string of comments from Hinch on Kahnle. The 36-year-old right-hander started off the year strong, but has cratered in recent outings. Through June, across 34 games, he had a 1.77 ERA, eight saves, 11 holds, and allowed four home runs while striking out 31 and walking nine. His beginning of the year was great, but across the next 15 outings, he's been significantly worse. In less than half the outings he had to begin the year, he's allowed four home runs, walked 13, struck out just eight, and has an ERA of 16.36. While the comments from Hinch are brutal for Kahnle, based on his performance, it's not unwarranted. Kahnle has been one of the worst relievers in baseball since the beginning of July, and his season ERA jumped up to 5.27 after such a brutal stretch. There could be a reason behind his struggles this season: his usage. He's pitched 46.2 innings this season, which is the most he's pitched since 2019 with the New York Yankees. MORE: Tigers top prospects could be impacted by $130 million Roman Anthony Red Sox contract With a month and a half of the 2025 season left, he's already pitched the fourth-most innings he has in a season in his career. Combined with his age, the Tigers reliever could be burnt out. The 11-year veteran might not be in his best shape come the postseason if he continues to pitch. Instead of trotting him out there, the Tigers should find a way to dramatically limit his innings. When he's on, he's a very solid reliever. But his struggles lately are too much, as Hinch's comments indicate he's just about done experimenting with Kahnle. The veteran reliever's struggles are too detrimental, and the Tigers could pivot in another direction. It's a tough decision, especially after how great he was to begin the year. But, based on Hinch's comments, Kahnle is on thin ice in Detroit and could see his time with the team come to an end soon. 'You kidding me?': Fighters lose their minds over Lerone Murphy's KO of Aaron Pico at UFC 319

Lerone Murphy promised to show Aaron Pico isn't quite ready to get past the elite at featherweight on Saturday when he spoiled a heavily-hyped UFC 319 debut with a massive spinning elbow knockout. Murphy (17-0-1 MMA, 9-0-1 UFC) was tasked with welcoming Bellator and PFL veteran Pico (13-5 MMA, 0-1 UFC) to the octagon in the co-headliner at United Center in Chicago. Just like every other time in his career, he refused to lose and emerged with a METHOD triumph to further elevate his own profile in the 145-pound title picture. Bulls rumors: The $80 million contract Chicago offered Josh Giddey at start of free agency

The post Bulls rumors: The $80 million contract Chicago offered Josh Giddey at start of free agency appeared first on ClutchPoints. One of the major questions for the Chicago Bulls this offseason has involved the future of point guard Josh Giddey, who turned into a triple double machine down the stretch of last season. Still, for a while it has appeared that the two sides are quite far apart on talks for a potential new deal to keep the former Oklahoma City Thunder lottery pick in the Windy City. Recently, NBA insider Jake Fischer took to Marc Stein's Substack to reveal the initial contract that Chicago offered Giddey earlier this offseason, and how things have unfolded from there. 'League sources say that the Bulls made an offer of $80 million over four years to restricted free agent Josh Giddey when the offseason commenced on June 30,' reported Fischer. 'Giddey, of course, is seeking an annual salary in the $30 million range. Chicago has been anchored in the $20 million range in annual value ever since its original offer.' Fischer also reported that some other teams have been interested in potential sign and trade scenarios for Giddey, but that thus far, nothing has materialized on that front. 'The Bulls have likewise become generally known over the past few years as a team that can be challenging to talk trade with. Rival executives have had trouble for several trade deadlines in a row trying to pinpoint whether the Bulls were or weren't looking to offload some of their veteran players,' noted Fischer. A big decision for the Bulls While the Bulls' season ended in familiar fashion last year–a play-in game exit vs the Miami Heat–it was a bit easier of a pill to swallow for Chicago fans considering that this time around, their team was led by young talent as opposed to aging vets like DeMar DeRozan. A big part of that youth movement was the emergence of Giddey, who played the best basketball of his career down the stretch of last season and showcased the playmaking at 6'8″ that made him an intriguing draft prospect back in 2021. It remains to be seen whether the Bulls and Giddey will finally come to terms on a new deal any time in the near future.
