Dope test challenge sets off war of words in Dharamkot amid Punjab's anti-drug campaign
2
Bathinda: Amid the Punjab government's ongoing anti-drug campaign, 'Yudh Nashia Virudh', a heated social media exchange erupted between Iqbal Singh, brother of former Congress MLA from Dharamkot Sukhjit Singh Lohgarh, and AAP MLA Devinderjit Singh Ladi Dhos, over the campaign's execution and impact.
In a social media post, Iqbal Singh challenged Ladi Dhos to urge the chief minister and health minister to establish a high-powered committee tasked with conducting dope tests on the MLA and the coordinators of the 'Yudh Nashia Virudh' campaign in Dharamkot. Singh asserted that the findings of such a committee would be fully accepted by them, and if the results validated the campaign, they would acknowledge its authenticity.
Responding to the challenge, Ladi Dhos announced via social media that he would visit Lohgarh village, which is home of the former Congress MLA, in the Dharamkot assembly constituency, Moga district, on Sunday. He invited Iqbal Singh to bring a team of doctors of his choice to ensure transparency and eliminate any doubts regarding the dope test results.
As announced, the MLA reached Lohgarh village gurdwara on Sunday for his dope test, but no one was there from the other side.
MLA Ladi Dhos then made various allegations against the former MLA and his brother of sand mining and selling posts of sarpanches during his tenure.
The MLA said, "I went for the dope test and waited for over two hours for others to come, but nobody reached to conduct the test as I asked them to come with a team of doctors for the test. It seems they only wanted to attract attention by putting up a fake challenge."
Iqbal Singh countered the allegations, stating that only one and a half years are left in the completion of the tenure, and people will tell who did what in their respective tenures.
As for coming to Lohgarh village with a team of doctors, we do not believe in personal fights. We asked him to get the dope test of the MLA and all coordinators done by a high-powered committee formed by the state govt.
Earlier, during the previous Congress govt, a war of words had ensued between then SAD president and Jalalabad MLA Sukhbir Singh Badal and the then Zira Congress MLA Kulbir Singh Zira over the issue of drugs. Kulbir Singh Zira had challenged Sukhbir Badal to get dope tests conducted at Thatha Kishan Singh village in Zira on Jan 29, 2019, when Sukhbir was to visit the village. Kulbir Zira made the health authorities set up a counter for conducting a dope test at Thatha Kishan Singh village.
Zira got his test conducted, which was negative, but Sukhbir questioned the authority of Zira in asking for the test.

Previous govts repeatedly deceived Delhi: CM Rekha Gupta
Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday slammed the 'previous' Delhi government for obstructing the city's development by preventing central government benefits from reaching people. Gupta was speaking at a public gathering after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Delhi sections of Dwarka Expressway and Urban Extension Road-II on Sunday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi being felicitated by Delhi CM Rekha Gupta during the inauguration of the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), in New Delhi on Sunday. 'The previous governments repeatedly deceived Delhi, and due to petty politics, prevented the benefits of central government schemes and support from reaching people. Schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and Swachh Bharat Mission never reached the citizens of Delhi. Previous governments, driven by narrow self-interest, turned their back on the people and deliberately stalled development. However, PM Shri Modi Ji never turned his back on Delhi, never discriminated, nor bowed to pressure,' CM Gupta said. In response, the AAP leaders have accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of misusing government machinery by forcing sanitation workers and teachers to attend PM Modi's rally under the pretext of official duty. 'On Sunday morning, our poor Dalit sanitation workers in Delhi were called in the name of duty. Now they are being packed into buses and taken to PM Modi's rally. This is the real face of the BJP,' former Delhi chief minister and AAP leader Atishi said in a post on X. The CM said that under the leadership of PM Modi, Delhi has received support in the form of various schemes over the last decade. 'These schemes and this assistance were never fully implemented by the previous government, but even so, the Centre's contribution continues to play a historic role in strengthening Delhi's infrastructure,' she said. 'The inauguration of the Dwarka Expressway and UER-II will give new wings to Delhi's speed. Who would have thought that the journey from Singhu Border to the airport could be completed in just 40 minutes? Who would have imagined that the dreaded traffic jams of Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan and NH-8 could be overcome so smoothly?,' she added. Slamming the BJP for 'cheap politics', Atishi said, 'BJP is openly insulting Dalit sanitation workers. Forcing them under the guise of work and sending them to rallies is illegal and inhuman. MCD commissioner Ashwini Kumar should also face action. BJP has deceived the people of Delhi as well.'

Ramesh submits complaint to vigilance chief
Thiruvananthapuram: Congress MLA and former opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala has lodged a complaint with the vigilance director, demanding a detailed investigation into the corruption involving approximately Rs 100cr by the public sector institution Anert in the P M Kusum project, a central scheme to provide free solar pumps to farmers in Kerala. The complaint calls for an investigation into the irregularities and tender procedures from the project's inception. The complaint is supported by all relevant evidence, he said. The Anert CEO has been named as the primary accused in the complaint, said a statement. "The total financial loss incurred by the govt through these transactions can only be determined through a proper investigation. More culprits involved in the illegal transactions can only be identified through a comprehensive investigation. Additionally, there are various irregularities in the project's implementation. The guidelines issued by the Govt of India as per Annexure-A1 were completely violated, which can only be revealed through a proper and fair investigation," Chennithala said in the complaint. "Despite being eligible to call tenders only up to Rs 5cr, the Anert CEO called for tenders worth Rs 240cr. The first tender issued on Aug 10, 2022, marked the beginning of the irregularities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Vitauthority Learn More Undo There is clear misconduct in the withdrawal of the company Athithi Solar, which had offered the lowest rate in the tender. Typically, when companies withdraw in such cases, their deposit is forfeited but this was not done here. It appears that efforts were made to ensure that companies did not incur any losses even when the first contract was cancelled irregularly. However, the second tender was accepted at a significantly higher amount than the initial contract. The contract was secured at an amount up to 145% higher than what the central govt had set," he said. Even after retendering, deliberate efforts were made to select Tata Solar. The quote from Qantas Automation, which was lower, was disregarded in favour of Tata. Temporary staff were involved in altering even the amounts in the e-tender, he added. In this context, it is requested that a case be registered against the accused officials for these offences and that a necessary investigation be conducted to uphold the rule of law and justice, thereby preventing the embezzlement of public funds through fraudulent means, stated Ramesh Chennithala in the complaint. Opposition likely to field a non-political face
Hours after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced Maharashtra governor CP Radhakrishnan as the Vice President candidate, a number of INDIA group parties pitched for an eminent person, who adheres to Constitution and democratic values but does not belong to any major party, as the Opposition candidate. Congress president Kharge has called a meeting of Opposition floor leaders on Monday. The V-P poll issue might be discussed there, too.(PTI FILE PHOTO) The Opposition is expected to announce its candidate by Tuesday. In the previous election, former Congress minister Margaret Alva was fielded against NDA's Jagdeep Dhankhar. The move irked the Trinamool Congress (TMC) — then the second largest Opposition party, and it decided not to support Alva. To avoid any such mistake, top Congress leaders have indicated that the pick for the upcoming election will be a 'INDIA bloc' candidate and not a party's candidate. A senior floor leader of a non-Congress Opposition party told HT, 'We prefer an eminent person as the candidate and not a politician. But, that person would adhere to the values of the Constitution and democracy.' A Congress leader also said that it is open to fielding a non-politician nominee. 'We will have a detailed discussion with all the leaders of the INDIA bloc. It is not necessary that the candidate must be a politician,' he said A non-Congress candidate who doesn't belong to any political party also makes for a better strategy vis-à-vis parties such as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) or TMC and fence sitters such as Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) or Biju Janata Dal (BJD). At least eleven AAP MPs (barring Swati Maliwal) might have reservation for politicians from other parties but might vote if some eminent personality is fielded. Even as AAP quit the INDIA group, it joined the Opposition's march to the Election Commission last week. On August 8, after the dinner hosted by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi at his residence, 14 senior Opposition leaders including former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former CMs Akhilesh Yadav, Uddhav Thackeray and Farooq Abdullah, TMC's Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O'Brien and CPI(M)'s MA Baby joined Rahul Gandhi for another round of meeting where the issue of Vice President election was briefly discussed. Many leaders supported the idea of fielding a non-politician for the September 9 polls. In 2017, the Opposition had fielded Gopal Krishna Gandhi, ex-diplomat and former West Bengal governor, as its candidate against NDA's Venkaiah Naidu. According to functionaries, Kharge has already discussed the Vice Presidential polls with Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, and Congress general secretary KC Venugopal. On Monday, Kharge has called a meeting of Opposition floor leaders. The VP poll issue might be discussed there, too.
