Bengal girl killed allegedly after TMC workers hurled bombs during victory rally

Kolkata: A 13-year-old girl was killed in an explosion triggered by a crude bomb allegedly hurled by workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) while they were celebrating the party's victory in the bye-elections at Kaliganj in West Bengal's Nadia district on Monday afternoon. Police said they shall spare no stones unturned to nab the culprits . (Representational image) 'Today, a 13-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries sustained from an explosion in Kaliganj PS area of Krishnanagar police district. We shall spare no stones unturned to nab the culprits who were behind the incident. Raids are on in full swing to arrest those responsible for this extremely unfortunate death,' the state police wrote on X. Alifa Ahmed, the TMC candidate, won the bye-election by 50,049 votes. While Ahmed received 102,759 votes, Ashish Ghosh, the BJP-candidate, received 52,710 votes. The by-election was necessitated after the death of former TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed in February this year. Nasiruddin Ahmed was the father of Alifa Ahmed. The TMC has been winning the seat since 2011. 'I am shocked and deeply saddened at the death of a young girl in an explosion at Barochandgar in Krishnanagar police district. My prayers and thoughts are with the family in their hour of grief. Police shall take strong and decisive legal action against the culprits at the earliest,' Mamata Banerjee, chief minister of West Bengal, wrote on X. Ziaul Sheikh, a local resident who was also beaten up, said, 'TMC workers and supporters were playing with green colour, shouting slogans, bursting crackers. Crude bombs were being hurled indiscriminately at the houses of CPI(M) and Congress workers and supporters. One such bomb killed the 13-year-old girl.' The TMC had first won the seat in 2011 when it came to power ending the 34-year-old Left regime. Nasiruddin Ahmed was elected the TMC legislator. In 2016, he lost the seat to Congress-CPI(M) alliance candidate Sheikh Hasanuzzaman. However, Hasanuzzaman later joined Trinamool. Nasiruddin reclaimed the Kaliganj seat in the 2021 Assembly polls. The seat fell vacant after his demise. The bye-election is being seen as a litmus test for both the ruling TMC and its arch rival the BJP ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.

Bypoll results: Congress-led UDF wins in Kerala, TMC wins in Bengal, AAP and BJP secure one seat each in Gujarat

By-elections to assembly seats in Gujarat, Punjab, West Bengal, and Kerala on Monday delivered mixed results, with AAP gaining ground, TMC set to retain its seat in Bengal, and the Congress-led UDF scoring a key victory in Kerala. Kerala: UDF snatches Nilambur seat In a severe blow to the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government in Kerala, the opposition UDF on Monday surged ahead in the Nilambur Assembly by-election and was on the verge of victory as counting neared completion. UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath, son of Congress veteran Aryadan Muhammed, secured a lead of 11,077 votes over CPI(M)'s M Swaraj. The bypoll was widely seen as a mid-term referendum on the LDF government. Independent candidate P V Anvar, the former legislator whose resignation triggered the bypoll, surprised many with his strong performance, securing over 18,000 votes. The BJP candidate, Mohan George, lagged far behind. Celebrations erupted in Nilambur and across the UDF camp, with Congress leaders hailing the result as a sign of growing public support ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.

At least 13 people were arrested in Rajasthan's Pokaran town in Jaisalmer district over an objectionable comment posted on social media targetting local MLA Mahant Pratappuri related to International Yoga Day, police said on Monday said. The incident began after photos from theYoga Day celebration held in Pokaran on June 21 were shared on social media. (Sourced HT photo) The situation escalated late Sunday night when a mob attacked the Pokaran police station following the arrest of the accused Rafique from Gomat village, prompting police to resort to a lathi-charge and detain several individuals. According to Jaisalmer Superintendent of Police (SP) Sudhir Choudhary, the incident began after photos from the state-level International Yoga Day celebration held in Pokaran on June 21 were shared on social media. Among them were images of BJP MLA Mahant Pratappuri. The image drew controversial remarks from the accused who was arrested on Sunday night. Later that night around 10:30pm, as many as 60 people led by Gomat village Sarpanch's husband Firoz Khan gathered at the Pokaran police station to protest Rafique's arrest. Despite efforts by police to pacify the crowd, the protest turned violent as the mob began pelting stones at the police station. No injuries were reported among police personnel. In response, police detained 19 people. Following preliminary questioning, 13 individuals — including Firoz Khan — were formally arrested on charges of obstructing government work and inciting violence. 'To disperse the mob, police were compelled to use batons,' SP Choudhary said, adding that legal action has been initiated against those responsible for the attack on the police station premises and gate. Police have also identified 40 more individuals allegedly involved in the violence. Their names have been included in the first information report (FIR), and arrests are expected soon. SP Choudhary, who rushed to Pokaran late Sunday night, reviewed the situation on the ground and instructed officers to take strict action. 'Anyone posting derogatory content against religious or social figures on social media will not be spared,' he said.
