Nuns are innocent, say family members of tribal women

The Hindu6 days ago
Days after the Chhattisgarh Police arrested three persons, including two Keralite nuns, on charges of trafficking and forcibly converting a few tribal women, the latter's family members have denied the police claim.
The kin said the women accompanied the nuns and a man from Narayanpur of their own volition, and that they are innocent.
However, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, on Monday (July 28, 2025), backed the arrests, saying that 'through inducement, an attempt was being made [by the arrested persons] to engage in human trafficking and conversion'.
The arrest sparked widespread protests from Delhi to Kerala on Monday (July 28, 2025).
Nuns Preeti Mary and Vandana Francis, and Sukaman Mandavi from Narayanpur were arrested on July 25 after a local Bajrang Dal member, Ravi Nigam, filed a complaint with the police, saying that Mr. Mandavi had brought three women to the Durg railway station, from where they had to go to Agra with the two nuns.
'They are being framed'
Speaking to The Hindu over the phone on Monday (July 28, 2025) evening, the sisters of two of the women rejected claims of forceful conversion, and said they themselves had consented to be taken to Agra for a job. Their family members did not have any objections either, they said.
'Our parents are no longer alive and I sent my sister with the nuns so that she could take up a nursing job in Agra. I myself had taken up a job with them in Lucknow and I realised a similar move would help her to become self-reliant. And my sister was completely in agreement. The sisters [nuns] are innocent. Even the boy [Mandavi] is being framed, we sent our sisters with him,' said the elder sister of one of the three women over phone from a police station in Durg.
The younger sister of another woman who was in Narayanpur also demanded the release of the nuns and said her sister left home on July 24, and that the family had converted to Christianity five years ago.
In a related development post the arrests, all three families gave a written submission to the Narayanpur Police on July 26 saying that they were aware that the women were being taken for jobs, said Narayanpur Superintendent of Police Robinson Guria.
On the question of families' consent and the basis for arrest, a Government Railway Police (GRP) officer said they were in the process of gathering corroborative evidence.
Safety issue, says CM
Even as senior police officers in the GRP or the State police were unavailable for comment, the Chief Minister backed the move and claimed the issue of women's safety was being given a 'political colour'.
'Three daughters from Narayanpur were promised nursing training and subsequent job placements. They were handed over to two nuns at the Durg station by a person from Narayanpur, who were taking the girls to Agra. Through inducement, an attempt was being made to engage in human trafficking and conversion,' Mr. Sai said.
'This is a serious matter related to women's safety. The investigation is still ongoing. The matter is under judicial review, and the law will take its course.'
'Chhattisgarh is a peaceful State where people of all religions and communities live in harmony. It is extremely unfortunate to give a political colour to the issue related to the safety of our Bastar daughters,' he wrote on X.

Nuns' bail based on merit, not external intervention, says Minister Sivankutty; V. Muraleedharan contrasts religious freedom in India with global Christian persecution

General Education Minister V. Sivankutty has said that the bail received by the two Keralite nuns, who were held in judicial remand in Chhattisgarh on 'fake allegations' of human trafficking and forced conversion, should not be misconstrued as the result of any external intervention. The court granted them bail after understanding the facts of the case. It was not due to assistance from anyone, as some falsely claim, he added. Mr. Sivankutty was inaugurating a civic reception organised in honour of Catholicos Mor Baselios Joseph I, head of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, at the St. Peter's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Simhasana Cathedral here on Sunday. While reiterating the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government's unwavering support to the Jacobite Church for all just causes, the Minister assured that instances of religious persecution would never occur in Kerala. 'No community, including Christians, will be subjected to such harassment here. But, how many other States in the country can claim to uphold such liberty for believers of various faiths? It is time people realise this reality.' 'Christians persecuted all over' However, former Union Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader V. Muraleedharan drew attention to the widespread persecution of Christians across the world, contrasting it with the relative religious freedom enjoyed in India. He cited instances of violence targeting Christians in countries such as Syria and Iraq to emphasise the gravity of the global situation. 'Christians are persecuted in many of such places. Priests from those regions could tell us what State-sponsored repression of minorities looks like,' he remarked. Mr. Muraleedharan also referred to a recent terror attack on a church at Damascus that left nearly 25 people dead, and the civil war that had engulfed Syria which forced even the Patriarch of Antioch and the supreme head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church, Ignatius Aphrem II, to cut short his visit to India last year. 'In India, whether in Thiruvananthapuram or elsewhere, no one needs to fear getting shot at or dying in explosions while attending such programmes. The situation here is vastly different,' he asserted. Catholicos Mor Baselios Joseph I called for a lasting solution with the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Kuriakose Mar Theophilos, Resident Metropolitan, Malankara Syrian Orthodox Theological Seminary, presided over the function. Antony Raju, MLA, Metropolitan Archbishop Mar Thomas Tharayil of Syro Malabar Archeparchy of Changanassery, Bishop Antony Mar Silvanios of the Major Archiepiscopal Curia of Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, Bishop Mathews Mor Silvanus of the Thiruvananthapuram Diocese of Believers Eastern Church, former Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson and church vicar Alexander Thomas also spoke.

Attack on pastor: Sulthan Bathery police register suo motu case

The Sulthan Bathery police have registered a case as part of the continuing investigation into the alleged manhandling attempt by a group of suspected Bajrang Dal activists against a pastor accusing him of conducting a door-to-door religious campaign for conversion in Wayanad district. The suo motu case was registered on August 2 after a video clip of the alleged attack, which took place on April 2, 2025 following allegations over forcible religions conversion attempts, resurfaced on various social media platforms. Pastor arrested for sexually assaulting five minor girls in Chennai The statement of the pastor who represented the Pentecost church would be recorded soon. However, no formal complaint was raised by the threatened pastor till date. Police sources said efforts were on to identify the attackers involved in the incident. The suo motu case was registered under Sections 192 (wantonly giving provocation with the intent to cause riot), 351 (3) [criminal intimidation to cause death or grievous hurt] and Section 3(5) [criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of the common intention] of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A senior police officer associated with the ongoing investigation said the pastor was threatened by the gang when he reportedly went to a tribal settlement at Cherukad near Sulthan Bathery to invite children to a summer vacation camp on April 2. 'The statement of the tribespeople at the settlement would be recorded soon for more clarity,' he added. The incident comes to light at a time when the State is going through an intense political storm over the recent arrest and imprisonment of two catholic nuns in Chhattisgarh, alleging forcible religious conversion and human trafficking attempts. The Bajrang Dal and the BJP activists had drawn the criticisms of their political opponents and the church in the name of supporting the legal action.
