Smaller manufacturers drove growth of the sector for the second consecutive quarter, while rural markets outpaced urban growth for the fifth consecutive quarter.Rural markets, which contribute over a third of overall consumer goods sales in India, grew 8.4% year-on-year by volume compared to 2.6% growth in urban India.Rural sector powered small manufacturers with annual turnover below Rs 100 crore which grew 11.9% by volumes, while companies with a turnover between Rs 100 crore to Rs 1,000 crore reported volume growth of 6.4% in the quarter. 'Small manufacturers grew twice as fast than the overall FMCG market, gaining ground due to a low base, rural growth and changing market dynamics, though their long-term momentum remains to be seen,' Roosevelt D'Souza, head of customer success – FMCG, NielsenIQ India, said.Various trends show that the rural could become the new urban for India's businesses, especially FMCG, as villages come up on the consumption ladder, even as rural-contiguous areas, the small towns, are also witnessing resurgence in India's business and economy.

Govt to enable UPI payment in all ration shops within a year
Chennai: Tamil Nadu govt will introduce unified payments interface (UPI) transactions in all 37,328 fair price shops across the state within the next year. As many as 10,661 shops under the public distribution system (PDS) across 37 districts already support cashless payments. Officials from the co-operation, food and consumer protection department said the move is part of modernisation measures, which include ISO quality certifications and renovation of all shops. ELCOT will facilitate the procurement of scanners and POS devices, which will support both card and QR code payments. Each set will cost about 20,000, including the billing machine. "We received complaints that Amma Canteens were receiving PDS ration in bulk in the city. With QR or digital payments, such pilferage will also reduce," said an official from the department. The state operates one of the country's largest PDS networks, distributing rice, wheat, sugar, tur dal, palm oil, palm jaggery, and millets to 2.25 crore ration cardholders. Of these outlets, 35,181 are run by the cooperative department, 1,527 by the Tamil Nadu civil supplies corporation (TNCSC), 152 by other cooperatives, and 468 by women's self-help groups. Digital payments are one of the criteria for receiving ISO certification. So far, 10,149 fair price shops have obtained ISO 9001 certification for quality, and 2,059 have received ISO 28000 certification for storage safety.

RInfra, Rpower say Enforcement Directorate concludes searches

New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) Reliance Group firms Reliance Infrastructure (RInfra) and Reliance Power (RPower) on Sunday said the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has concluded searches at their premises and the companies will continue to cooperate with the federal probe agency. On Saturday, the ED carried out searches against the companies of Reliance Group chairman Anil Ambani in Mumbai for the third day and recovered a number of documents and computer peripherals from multiple locations, according to official sources. The raids were launched on July 24 by the federal probe agency as part of an alleged Rs 3,000-crore bank loan fraud-linked money laundering case apart from multiple other allegations of financial irregularities with crores of rupees by certain companies. 'The action by the ED has had no impact on the business operations, financial performance, shareholders, employees, or any other stakeholders,' the two companies said in their stock exchange filings. Anil D. Ambani is not on the boards of RInfra and RPower. Accordingly, any action taken against RCOM or RHFL has no bearing or impact on the governance, management, or operations of RInfra and RPower, the two companies said. According to ED sources, the investigation primarily pertains to allegations of illegal loan diversion of around Rs 3,000 crore, given by the Yes Bank to the group companies of Ambani between 2017 and 2019. The Union government had informed the Parliament recently that the State Bank of India has classified RCOM along with Ambani as 'fraud' and was also in the process of lodging a complaint with the CBI. A bank loan 'fraud' of more than Rs 1,050 crore between RCOM and Canara Bank is also under the scanner of the ED apart from some 'undisclosed' foreign bank accounts and assets, the ED sources said. Reliance Mutual fund is also stated to have invested Rs 2,850 crore in AT-1 bonds and a 'quid pro quo' is suspected here by the agency. Additional Tier 1 (AT-1) are perpetual bonds issued by banks to increase their capital base and they are riskier than traditional bonds having higher interest rates.
