'This is all I want to do': Meet the Dubliner documenting Ireland's marine life
IRELAND'S MARINE LIFE may appear underrepresented compared to our wildlife – there is much talk of our flóra agus fána , but perhaps slightly less about our ainmhithe agus éisc mhara . Joey Batt, a 32-year-old health and safety and operations coordinator at Dublin Port, thinks so anyways. That's why he's taken to sharing his hobby documenting marine life off Ireland's west coast online to his tens of thousands of followers. The Journal / YouTube Batt was born and raised in Sheriff Street in the north inner city of Dublin. He told The Journal that before Covid hit, he had left Dublin only twice: once to go to Spain and once to France on school holidays. 'We used to go to Balbriggan [in north county Dublin] every year,' he said. He bought his first drone roughly eight years ago to use as a hobby, and then began using it to take pictures. It was only during the Covid years that he began to take interest in what was going on in Irish waters. He and a friend set off in the car when restrictions lifted and decided to head somewhere. 'We just opened Google Maps and said, 'where will go we go?' and we just zoomed in on everywhere. We just found a place and there was blue water on the map, so we said we'd go there.' They drove four and a half hours to Keem Bay in Co Mayo. 'When you turn up around that bend on a sunny day you're just like, what even is this?' Batt said. There were dolphins there at the time. Now, Batt spends most of his weekends travelling the west coast and documenting marine life on his TikTok and Instagram pages, Dublin Drone, which have a combined following of almost 100,000. Dingle Bay's Humpback whale captured in full flight. Joey Batt / Instagram Joey Batt / Instagram / Instagram When he spoke to The Journal earlier this week, he hadn't long returned from five days at Loop Head in Co Clare where he observed basking sharks swimming in formations. 'This is probably one of the rarest events that sharks do,' he said. 'You have these basking sharks that arrive off the coast out of nowhere, and they all just come together in big formations.' It only happens once a year for around a week and there is not a set date to look out for – Batt received word that it had begun and he dropped everything to head straight to Clare. Advertisement 'They still don't exactly know what they're doing, but they're swimming in these beautiful formations,' he said. Tourists gathered to watch the occasion and in the evening times, locals would head down to observe the annual phenomenon. Joey Batt / Instagram Joey Batt / Instagram / Instagram Batt devotes enormous amounts of time to his documentation of these events, but makes no money from it. In Ireland, the only way to make money off social media is through sponsorships and paid advertisements, which Batt has decided not to attach himself to. His main focus is on raising awareness in Ireland of the vastness and intricacies of Irish marine life. 'The plan is to try to help highlight what's out there,' he said. 'That's all I want to do – to really highlight what's in Irish waters.' A grey seal colony relaxing on the edge of Bull Island. Joey Batt / Instagram Joey Batt / Instagram / Instagram He said that many people have no idea the extent of marine mammals close to the country's coast. 'I didn't even know we had dolphins,' he said, before he had travelled to other parts of the country several years ago. The Journal / YouTube For those interested in viewing more of marine life or travelling to various parts of Ireland, Batt recommends both Dingle Bay and Donegal Bay. Dingle Bay is a prime spot to view dolphins, basking sharks, fin whales, and minke whales, depending on the time of year, he said. 'You have the large colony of seals down in Dingle: Ireland's largest colony of grey seals is down in Dingle on the Blasket Island Beach.' And Donegal Bay? 'I'd call it the humpback central of Ireland. Every year they have so many humpbacks.' Next month, he's to begin a marine mammal course, having been put forward for it by Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Readers like you are keeping these stories free for everyone... THE DJ famously had a major crush on a telly star DAMN ODOOM Melvin Odoom has secretly found love – and it's thanks to an I'm A Celeb mate I'M A Celebrity's Melvin Odoom has secretly found love - and it's all thanks to his former campmate. Sparks flew between Radio One DJ Melvin, 45, and his 31-year-old girlfriend Hannah Holland after being introduced through social media influencer GK Barry. 4 Melvin competed on the hit TV show last year Credit: Rex 4 He met his now-girlfriend, Hannah Holland, after the series came to a close Credit: Instagram/hannahroseholland The couple grew close after filming wrapped on the 2024 series in Australia, where Hannah had flown out for work. An insider told The Sun: 'Melvin and Hannah really hit it off and are incredibly happy together. 'They're both keen to keep their relationship out of the spotlight, but their chemistry is undeniable. 'It's now an open secret in the industry - everyone's thrilled for Melvin.' Redhead Hannah spent time Down Under in her role as CEO of HLD - a London-based Entertainment Agency - which represents GK Barry. She signed the star, real name Grace Keeling, who'd gone viral with her relatable and funny TikTok videos during the Covid lockdown. Hannah's paths crossed with Melvin while the pair watched from the family and friends area outside camp after Melvin was fourth to be voted out of the jungle. Presenter Melvin, who openly discussed his single status on the ITV show, had hopes of winning the heart of his cougar crush Carol Vorderman, 64, after leaving the show. He brought a cushion with a picture of her face printed on it as his luxury item on the show. The 45-year-old even role-played a date with her alongside his campmates - calling her his 'dream woman'. Former Countdown host Carol sent a voice note into the jungle spin-off show, Unpacked, telling him: 'See you on the other side.' I'm A Celeb's Melvin Odoom reveals Carol Vorderman has GHOSTED him She ghosted Melvin after sending her his number on social media. Melvin - who co-hosts the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge with Rickie Haywood-Williams and Charlie Hedges - admitted finding dating 'hard' before meeting Hannah. Speaking about looking for a future partner - he described wanting someone 'adventurous, motivated and passionate'. Meanwhile Hannah was focused on work before locking eyes with her now-partner - having secured the first TikTok star in I'm A Celeb history, a place in the jungle. She told followers at the time: 'Myself and Grace put this on our strategy 3 years ago and we bloody have done it! 'I'm so proud of you Grace, I can't wait for you to show the world how kind, funny and quick you are. Enjoy the big kangaroo balls.' GK Barry is said to be "thrilled" for the couple, who attended her 26th birthday party earlier this month. The Saving Grace podcaster and guests dressed as 'grandmas' as they enjoyed a knees-up at The Prince pub in London. Looking almost unrecognisable, Hannah transformed into 'momager' Kris Jenner for the intimate event - while Melvin snubbed the theme and stayed casual in a white top and shorts. Our insider added: "Melvin and Hannah are head over heels, it's the real deal." I'm A Celebrity was watched by eight million people last series, which was won by McFly star Danny Jones. 4 Melvin was introduced to Hannah by GK Barry, who Melvin enjoyed a fun-filled pub trip with dressed up as grandmas Credit: Instagram / gkbarry_

Styled By Niamh: Social media sensation Sian Walton on her not-so Simple Life
As a child, Irish social media star Sian Walton had a very different career in mind for herself – and became an influencer almost by accident. 'I am very much a big animal lover so I wanted to be a vet, but as I got older I hadn't a clue. 'I knew there was something out there for me, though influencing just wasn't a thing at the time,' Sian told Styled. Boohoo Chiffon Satin V Neck Maxi Dress – €29.00 Boohoo Suede tassel jacket €47.00 Boohoo Wide Fit Western Style Harness Detail Knee High Boots €34.00 Newbridge Silverware Dew Drop Oval Pendant with Mulberry Stone €50.00 She said inspiration first struck when she found herself adrift after leaving school. 'It was over 10 years ago. I was only 18 and had just left school, I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. All my friends were in college, and I did a personal training course. 'I started sharing all my workouts, food and anything fitness related. A lot of gym selfies,' she laughed. Sian grew up in the north Dublin countryside but went to school in Loreto on the Green in the heart of the city centre. 'It was a journey every day, but I absolutely loved being in the city – especially growing up in the middle of nowhere basically. It was exciting and different.' Boohoo Morgan Wallen License Cowgirls Printed Oversized T-Shirt €15.20 V by VeryFringe Midi Skirt – Brown€45 Very COACH . Horse & Carriage Enamel Hinged Bangle Bracelet – Gold €125 But she confided, she didn't have many friends at school and ended up losing the few she had because of her hugely popular Instagram and Youtube accounts. 'It was seen as 'embarrassing' at the time. So that really pushed me, and I devoted all my time to posting online. 'I would post every single day. 'After 10 years I've definitely grown a thick skin. I used to be very shy and sensitive, and I've changed a lot by putting myself out there,' she admitted. 'There have been times in the past where I have been upset over comments. Although it's not OK, I do think if you are getting negative comments – it just means you're doing something right!' Hollister Low-Rise Medium Wash Shortie Shorts € 45,95 Savida Maddie Rib Trim T-Shirt €12 However, she says YouTube is worse than Instagram for toxic comments. 'I remember getting a comment on my YouTube channel telling me to go drink bleach. I think I was around 20 at the time. That comment has always stuck with me, she admitted.' Sian – who credits her unusual name, which she 'loves', to her mum's influence – grew up as the youngest of three, with her older brother and sister now living abroad. Her father, Philip Walton, is a professional golfer who took the winning putt in the 1995 Ryder Cup, so it's little surprise that she loves to hit the links. Boohoo Pocket And Belt Detail Bandeau Denim Mini Dress €22.00 Very Burberry Oversized Sunglasses – Light Havana Women's Gucci @Brown Thomas Horsebit sandal €750 Hermes Eperon d'Or Bandana Twilly €315 'I do love to play golf – but just for fun! I definitely would love to play it more – I grew up around it. My dad has taught me a lot, and I absolutely love to go to the driving range with him.' The gym has, unsurprisingly, also been a huge part of her life over the last 10 years. 'I wouldn't call it a hobby, more of a lifestyle – I can't imagine my life without it. Not just for the physical benefits but mentally also. 'It's a complete escape for me and it always puts me in the best mood.' Boohoo Structured Satin Skater Mini Dress €32.50 Sian met her boyfriend and 'best friend', Brook Wright, seven years ago and she currently works front of house at his new venture in Swords, The Brook. 'We met in a nightclub in town and just hit it off from there. We are complete opposites if I'm honest! I'm probably a bit too laid back and he's super organised. 'They do say opposites attract. He has always pushed me to be my absolute best and to believe in myself at times when I haven't,' she said of his support. V by VeryDenim Co-Ord High Waist Jeans – Mid Was €52 Boohoo Studded Felt Detail Western Cowboy Hat €16.00 For now, she doesn't know what the future holds; she is just 'taking it day by day'. But despite her glamorous lifestyle, she does see herself on a farm one day. 'Growing up we had hens, a horse, donkey, cats, the list goes on… but I have always wanted to be on TV as well, so who knows!' The Simple Life Say what you will but fun fashion peaked in the early 2000's. And few people encapsulated bright, bubbly fashion like the glamorous double act that was Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie in their mega successful reality show The Simple Life. Pairing neon bikini tops and bandanas with the shortest of denim shorts wasn't out of the question, and flip-flops, low-rise jeans, even high heels for a day on the farm was par for the course. Cowboy hats, hairbands, neck scarfs, and oversized, outrageous totes and sunglasses can all be used to give a nod to to the style icons if you don't feel like going full-Paris. I Dream of Jeanie V by Very Denim Co-Ord Asymmetric Waistcoat – Mid Wash €42 Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle jeans campaign has made denim the outfit du jour. Denim can be both fun and functional – its beauty lies in the fact it's versatile enough to be styled for any occasion. The one thing to consider when choosing a perfect pair of jeans is that body type is all-important. Asos Nike Basketball NBA Unisex LA Lakers Lebron James jersey vest in yellow €83.99. Levis 501® 90's Jeans €84.00 Skinny jeans are flattering for most body types, whilst barrel-leg jeans work particularly well for pear and hourglass silhouettes. Flares can be tricky to pull off so approach with an abundance of caution. But luckily for us ladies, high-waisted jeans have made a massive comeback and are generally flattering for all shapes and sizes. Fest-Fabulous The festival season is in full swing with Electric Picnic just around the corner. So here is a handy guide to all weather festival essentials. Go wild and express yourself – just don't forget to pack a good pair of wellies. It's a time when you can let your hair down and discard the office day wear in favour of something fun, like hot pants and a cowboy hat. Flowy skirts and oversized shirts and sweaters look great in festival photos, and they have the added benefit of keeping you warm if it gets a bit nippy-which let's face it, it usually does in Ireland. A good jacket is essential, preferably one with a hood, while a tote bag fulfils a dual purpose – they hold a lot and look great in pics. Above all, don't forget to pack SPF and sunglasses. The first is always essential and the sunglasses – well, hopefully you'll need them!
