Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired a meeting to review the progress and future plans of the Fisheries sector.The plans are to advance the Fisheries sector while focusing on deep-sea fishing and seafood exports.This comes days after the Department of Fisheries, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, unveiled Rs 255 Crores worth of fisheries projects on April 28 in Mumbai.For this, the ministry organised "Coastal States Fisheries Meet: 2025", where Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh inaugurated and laid the foundation for key projects for seven coastal states and UTs with a total outlay of Rs 255.30 crores under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), underscoring the commitment of the government for advancing the fisheries sector in the coastal states and UTs.The fisheries sector in India plays a crucial role in supporting rural livelihoods and contributing to the country's national economy.With a vast coastline and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 2.02 million square kilometres, India boasts rich marine resources. The marine fisheries sector in India harbours significant potential, estimated at 5.31 million tonnes.Coastal states and Union Territories, which include around 3,477 coastal fishing villages, produce 72 per cent of the country's total fish production and account for 76 per cent of India's total seafood exports.The Ministry also launched a set of key initiatives aimed at strengthening marine fisheries and promoting sustainable practices, including the Marine Fisheries Census Operations, the Turtle Excluder Device (TED) project, and the release of the Standard Operating Procedure for the Vessel Communication and Support System.India is the second largest fish producing country with around 8 per cent share in global fish production. Over the past two decades, India's fisheries sector has witnessed significant growth and transformation.From technological advancements to policy reforms, the period from 2004 to 2024 has been marked by milestones that have bolstered India's position in global fisheries and aquaculture. The Union Budget 2025-26, proposed the highest ever total annual budgetary support of Rs. 2,703.67 crores for the fisheries sector.

FIDE World Cup 2025 could be moved from New Delhi to Goa
The highly anticipated 2025 FIDE World Cup, originally scheduled to be held in New Delhi, may be relocated from the national capital to Goa, The Indian Express has learned. 'The talks are ongoing. While I can't confirm anything at the moment, yes, Goa is the frontrunner to host the World Cup,' Mahesh Candolkar, president of the Goa Chess Association, told this newspaper. The Delhi Chess Association, however, claims to have no information about this change. 'Normally, the All India Chess Federation (AICF) doesn't organise events directly but through state associations. The Delhi Chess Association hasn't been informed about any such development (relocation of the tournament),' said Bharat Singh Chauhan, former AICF secretary and current Delhi Chess Association president. When asked about standard notification timelines regarding the potential relocation of the event, Chauhan added: 'For an international event of this scale, state associations are typically informed six to seven months in advance (if it is to be relocated). We haven't received any communication.' The AICF did not respond to queries regarding the potential change of venue. An email accessed by The Indian Express reveals that the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has also sanctioned Rs. 2.5 Crore to AICF on May 8th 2025, for the purpose of 'hosting of FIDE World Cup to be held in Delhi from 30th Oct to 27th November 2025'. While the exact reasons for the venue change remain unclear, sources close to the chess governing body suggest internal conflicts may be responsible, with potential government intervention to dissolve the current administration and call for fresh elections. Earlier, the AICF General Body, following the National Sports Code, unanimously elected the new set of office bearers for the 2024-27 term in New Delhi in March 2024. New Delhi was initially set to host India's first major international chess tournament since the 2022 Chennai Olympiad, with two AICF officials confirming in March that the biennial tournament, one of the flagship events in global chess, would likely be held at either Bharat Mandapam or Yashobhoomi. If the national capital loses the World Cup, it would be the second potential relocation for a major chess event in India. The Indian Express recently reported that the fourth leg of the 2025 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam tour, also scheduled to be held in New Delhi from September 17 to 24, could be moved to another venue outside India because of a lack of interest from local sponsors. A prestigious biennial knockout tournament, the FIDE World Cup features over 200 players and is one of the most important events for the World Championship cycle, with three out of the eight spots for the Candidates' tournament at stake. The winner of the marquee Candidates tournament will get to challenge the current World Champion, India's D. Gukesh, in 2026.

CM-YUVA campaign: Govt launches drive to aid college students, unemployed youths start own ventures
The state government has launched a campaign across all 75 districts as part of which special teams of officials will visit universities, engineering colleges and other higher education institutions to identify students in their final year, as well as those who remain unemployed despite completing their studies. Once identified, eligible youth will be offered interest-free, collateral-free loans of up to Rs 5 lakh to help them start their own ventures and become job creators. The campaign is being run under Mukhyamantri Yuva Udyami Vikas Abhiyan (CM-YUVA). According to Sarveshwar Shukla, Joint Commissioner of Industries and nodal officer of the scheme, the primary goal of the Yogi Adityanath-led government is to empower every eligible, educated and progressive-thinking youth by helping them launch their businesses. The vision is to transition youth from 'seeking jobs' to 'creating jobs.' Along with financial support, technical guidance will also be provided to ensure the success of these entrepreneurial initiatives. To ensure effective implementation, specialised training is being provided to officials. A two-day capacity-building workshop was recently organised in Lucknow, focusing on improving the rollout of the scheme and enhancing the functionality of the CM Yuva Portal. These trained officials will soon begin visiting campuses to implement the scheme at the grassroots level. According to the government, more than 2.5 lakh youths have applied for loans under the initiative. Of these, more than 1.10 lakh applications have been forwarded to banks, and loans have been sanctioned to over 53,000 applicants, with 40,000 already receiving funds. Young entrepreneurs have started utilising these interest-free loans to launch ventures in sectors — from cake manufacturing and digital marketing to launch ventures in sectors — from cake manufacturing and digital marketing to interior design, laundry services, solar panel installation, tattoo studios and mineral water plants.
