Daniels had a tremendous season and was deserving of this award. He led the Commanders to the playoffs and even won a playoff game. But Bowers deserved recognition for his historic season.
The main reason Bowers didn't stand a chance against Daniels was his position. Despite Bowers breaking a rookie tight end record that stood for six decades, despite setting the rookie receptions record…twice, and despite setting a new Raiders franchise receptions record (112), a tight end will always take a backseat to an elite quarterback.
Bowers did, lead the way in second place votes, getting 32 — 17 more than Broncos QB Bo Nix who also led his team to the playoffs. No one else was even in the conversation.

49ers' Brock Purdy reconnects with Brandon Aiyuk, relies on Ricky Pearsall in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS — More than an hour before kickoff, Brock Purdy threw to Brandon Aiyuk again. It was more than playing catch in the backyard. Aiyuk, nearly nine months removed from tearing his ACL and MCL in the same knee, moved in and out of cuts at a speed that almost seemed normal for the San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver. 'Obviously he looks great physically, progressing in the right way with his knee,' Purdy said postgame, 'but more than anything, man, you can tell he wants to get back out there and compete, which I love.' It appeared as if he was a step or two away from the Aiyuk of old that helped a rookie Purdy navigate Sin City. Allegiant Stadium was ground zero for what became a budding partnership between the two. A New Year's Day game set the stage for Purdy — recently thrust into a starting role from third string — to connect with Aiyuk on nine completions, matching their combined total across Purdy's first three career starts. Together, they eclipsed the century mark for the first time and led the 49ers to a thrilling 37-34 overtime win in Raiders country. 'The history that we've had on the field together has been awesome,' Purdy said. 'Whenever he's able to get back out there, we'll be ready to roll.' Saturday's nostalgia spanned only a few completions during warmups. Aiyuk is still months from making a full return. Purdy still fared more than fine in his 2025 debut. Ricky Pearsall kept the WR1 spot warm. Purdy and several starters, Pearsall included, played only the opening drive of the 49ers' second preseason game. Of seven passes Purdy attempted against the Raiders, the first three went to Pearsall, who caught each one for a total of 42 yards. Fans had heard of the promising Purdy-Pearsall connection all training camp. What they showed in almost six minutes of game action was proof of concept. Purdy and Pearsall didn't have much time to get on the same page last season. Pearsall missed most of OTAs and training camp due to injury, before a traumatic armed robbery incident in late August left the 2024 first-round pick to nurse a gunshot wound. Purdy recently said syncing with Pearsall upon his return to football was at first a struggle. They worked out together down in Florida during the offseason, and camp has largely allowed Purdy and Pearsall to focus on their chemistry sans Aiyuk and veteran Jauan Jennings, who has not practiced since late July with a calf injury (and a pending extension request). 'Ricky's a real good route runner, sometimes he gets too concerned with beating the guy, understanding that he's got to do it in the time of when Brock's looking at him,' 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said. 'That's something those guys have really been working through and getting really good at.' Purdy found Pearsall on the game's first two plays from scrimmage to move the sticks. Then, on a third-and-18, Purdy went back to the well: a 21-yard strike to Pearsall, who ran a dig into the soft spot of the Raiders' zone defense to preserve the drive. 'We're just always talking, man,' Purdy said. 'He loves football, I love football, and so when you got two guys that are willing to put in the extra work and explain what we're trying to get out of the plays and reps, I think great things can happen from that. 'We honed in on some things this year in camp.' It's not ideal to be without Aiyuk or Jennings, whose timetable to return remains unclear after his near-1,000-yard breakthrough a season ago. Much has been said about the potential acquisition of a veteran wideout to fill the void. At least for now, early returns suggest Pearsall may have the upside to justify pocketing the $14.2 million market value of Amari Cooper (per Spotrac) for a rainier day. Shanahan hasn't ruled out Jennings for Week 1. Perhaps a Pearsall-Jennings duo, plus a healthy Christian McCaffrey and smelling-salted George Kittle, could hold over the 49ers until Aiyuk is ready. Any rust accrued in the time since Purdy last targeted Aiyuk and Jennings does not worry the $265 million face of the franchise. They've been there, done that. 'They have so much experience, that when they do get on the field, they'll pick up right where they left off,' Purdy said. 'I always see JJ in the locker room, and we talk about practice, just what he's seeing. Same thing with Aiyuk. … They care, obviously, and they're continuing to grow mentally and stay on top of their game.'

Commanders activate Terry McLaurin off the PUP list as contract extension talks linger
ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Commanders activated Terry McLaurin off the physically unable to perform list on Saturday amid lingering contract extension talks with the All-Pro wide receiver. McLaurin, who is entering the final year of a three-year, $68.2 million contract signed in 2022, reported to the team on July 27 after skipping the initial four days of training camp and June's mandatory minicamp. That turned a holdout to a hold-in, but has not necessarily accelerated extension talks or returned McLaurin to practice. The team placed its top target on the PUP list with an ankle injury, and McLaurin requested a trade on July 31. He was not on the field Saturday for Washington's final practice before its Monday night home game against the Cincinnati Bengals. McLaurin and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels fueled an offense that ranked fifth in points scored last season and carried the Commanders to a 12-5 regular-season record and the franchise's first NFC championship game appearance since 1991. They haven't built off that success in camp with the Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the New York Giants approaching. Three other offensive starters have missed significant time with injuries. The activation comes one day after offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury expressed a desire to work with a full lineup. 'We need to start getting those guys, when they're available out there,' Kingsbury said. Head coach Dan Quinn said the PUP activation was about beginning the 'return-to-play' process where McLaurin acclimates physically with enough time for a hopeful return to action for the regular season, and that the receiver was 'on the same trajectory as everyone else (in terms) of doing the workouts.' 'We've got a real process in our return-to-play that we believe in,' Quinn said following Saturday's practice. 'We know it works. We'll hit all those steps.' Quinn said he doubted McLaurin would play in either of Washington's remaining preseason games. Daniels, along with other starters, are expected to play 'a few series' against the Bengals in their preseason debut, Quinn said.

Raiders rookie Ashton Jeanty takes a hit, then delivers one in 22-19 loss to the 49ers
LAS VEGAS -- Raiders rookie Ashton Jeanty proved he could deliver hits and absorb them at the NFL level, rushing for a bruising 33 yards and a touchdown on seven carries in Las Vegas' 22-19 preseason loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday. Jake Moody made a 59-yard field goal as time expired for the 49ers (1-1). He also converted a 44-yarder with 37 seconds remaining to tie the game, and then Jaylen Mahoney intercepted Raiders quarterback Cam Miller to set up the winner. 'I was glad the defense gave us a chance with Mahoney getting that interception,' 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. 'Wish he could have returned it a few more yards after it, but set it up perfect for Jake to have to make a big field goal, and to hit a 59-yarder there was huge.' Moody made 5 of 6 field goals while Daniel Carlson made all four of his tries for the Raiders (0-1-1). Brock Purdy played the first series for the 49ers, which ended in a field goal. He was 5 of 7 for 66 yards. Backup Mac Jones completed 13 of 16 passes for 135 yards with an interception, and former Raiders QB Carter Bradley was behind center for the tying and winning drives and finished 8 of 13 for 96 yards. Star running back Christian McCaffrey did not play for the 49ers. Geno Smith completed 6 of 8 passes for 55 yards as the Raiders' first-team offense played the first two series. The Raiders scored 10 points on those drives. Aidan O'Connell guided the team into the fourth quarter, finishing 15 of 23 for 138 yards with an interception. Jeanty was known for his tackle-breaking ability at Boise State, where he was the Heisman Trophy runner-up last season, and he showed that skill against the 49ers. He took a shot to his right shoulder from 49ers linebacker Tatum Bethune in the first quarter and went into the medical tent. Jeanty said he had a shoulder stinger and passed the concussion test. '(Bethune) definitely hit me pretty hard, but I didn't go down,' Jeanty said. He emerged from the tent and on the next series ran over San Francisco cornerback Deommodore Lenoir on his way to 13-yard gain. Jeanty topped off the drive by powering his way into the end zone from the 1-yard line. 'Man, it fires me up seeing the way that he runs,' Smith said. 'He's running through people and he's not shying away from contact. I think he's going to be a really special player. I think he's just got to keep working. There are a lot of things he can get better at, but to see him in space with the ball in his hands and how dynamic he is, it was great to see.' Jeanty, the sixth pick in the NFL draft, bounced back from an underwhelming performance in his first preseason game. He had minus-1 yard on three carries in a 23-23 tie at Seattle on Aug. 7. San Francisco lost three offensive players to injuries in the first half, including starting right guard Dominick Puni, who injured his knee while blocking on a field goal. Running back Corey Kiner was carted off after injuring an ankle and running back Patrick Taylor Jr. hurt a shoulder. The 49ers have already experienced plenty of injuries — particularly at wide receiver — in the run-up to the season. They entered the game without roughly 20 players. Tom Brady attended the game, making his latest appearance as a Raiders minority owner. He also attended a practice and a mock game two weeks ago. He entered Allegiant Stadium wearing a white Raiders jacket and black pants. The seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback wasn't the only notable ex-player in the stadium. Eight Hall of Famers — including Marcus Allen, Fred Biletnikoff and Tim Brown — were among several former Raiders given the silver-carpet treatment. 49ers: Host the Los Angeles Chargers next Saturday.
