Missed opportunities for Wrexham in cup final defeat

Leader Live29-04-2025

Losing finalists to Cardiff City in the showpiece 12 months ago, it was a similar story as the Bluebirds completed a league and cup double with a 3-1 win at Newport's Rodney Parade.
While Cardiff had the better of things, it was the tale of two penalties from Wrexham's perspective.
Abbie Iddenden netted from the spot in the first half, but Ava Suckley's penalty after the interval was saved by Cardiff keeper Ceryn Chamberlain.
Wrexham midfielder Lili Jones told S4C's Sgorio: 'Cardiff made the most of their opportunities and we didn't, really.
'I don't think they battered us 3-1, to be honest, but they scored and we didn't. That's what it's like in football sometimes.
'I don't think luck would have been enough for us today either. I don't think we were good enough in defence, but this is going to hurt for a few days.'
There was a great start from Cardiff and they had the lead in just the sixth minute.
Lily Billingham, the game's standout player, struck a cracking effort from distance and while Wrexham keeper Liz Craven got a touch on it, she couldn't keep the ball out.
Cardiff doubled their advantage in the 29th minute as Ffion Price delivered a terrific free kick into the box and Shannon Evans powerfully headed home.
Within two minutes and Wrexham were right back in it. Iddenden was fouled by Chamberlain and the Reds' striker picked herself up to tuck the spot kick into the corner of the net.
After City enjoyed a promising start to the second half, Wrexham responded and they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Evans on Suckley.
It was Suckley who stepped forward, but her spot kick was hit straight at Chamberlain, who saved.
Cardiff regained their two-goal cushion with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining. Billingham played in Fiona Barry, who took the ball around Craven and then rolled her effort into the net.
Jones added: 'I think we've had a pretty consistent phase two, if I'm totally honest.
'Maybe a week off had tripped us up a little bit. But, there's no excuses.
'Cardiff have had games off as well and it's just a game of football at the end of the day.
'Whoever wanted it more was going to win today and Cardiff came out on top. It's gutting, to be honest.'
In the North East Wales League, Northop Hall were beaten 9-0 at Berriew.
Former Wrexham player Mia Roberts grabbed the opener as Llandudno defeated Y Felinheli 3-1 in the North Wales Coast FA Cup final.

Uefa rules on multi-club ownership prevent any two clubs controlled by the same person or group from competing in the same competition. Both Palace and Lyon have qualified for next year's Europa League, but the Ligue 1 side would have precedence as they finished higher in their domestic league. And now The Times state Forest made contact with European football's governing body to highlight the potential breach. Should Palace be kicked out of the Europa League, it is understood Nottingham Forest would be promoted from the Conference League and take the Eagles' Europa League place. Forest themselves made the necessary changes to their ownership structure when it became apparent both they and owner Evangelos Marinakis' other team Olympiacos could both qualify for the Champions League. Nottingham Forest write to UEFA to 'express concern' over Crystal Palace

Nottingham Forest have spoken to UEFA to express their concern over Crystal Palace's potential involvement in the Europa League as the FA Cup winners attempt to prove their breached no rules Nottingham Forest have written to UEFA to express concern over Crystal Palace potentially participating in the Europa League given the multi-club ownership rules that are in place. John Textor, the American businessman who has a 43 per cent stake in the Premier League side, also owns Lyon, who have qualified for Europe's secondary competition. The Eagles hierarchy have met with UEFA officials to try explain Textor's situation. ‌ Forest however can stand to gain if UEFA do choose to kick Palace out of the Europa League. The Nottingham outfit enjoyed a stellar year, challenging for the Champions League, but eventually having to settle for the Europa Conference League after finishing seventh. ‌ However they could be bumped up if Palace fall foul of UEFA's rules and the Times reports that they have been in contact with European football's governing body regarding the matter. Much may yet depend on whether Lyon themselves are allowed to play in the Europa League. UEFA's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) disqualified Lyon from European competitions in December but allowed them to continue after the club met certain demands. However the French side are being 'carefully monitored' by the CFCB and could be disqualified from next season's Europa League for any breaches. It is understood that Palace case could end up at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Forest could also take the matter to the courts if the Eagles are still deemed eligible. UEFA have previously been rigid in their application of their rules which could count against the FA Cup winners. Eagles shareholders Textor and David Blitzer want to put their shares in a blind trust to ensure the club can compete in Europe next season - but UEFA claim their request has come too late. UEFA rules state that such ownership changes must take place before 1 March to take effect in time for the following season. Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has transferred his shares given his Greek club Olympiacos have qualified for next season's Champions League. ‌ Blitzer is also an owner of Danish club Brondby who qualified for the Conference League. It means there could be issues should Palace want to drop down into that tournament instead. Manchester City and Manchester United both used blind trusts to remain compliant with UEFA's multi-club rules last season. Their partner clubs, Girona and Nice, also qualified for the Champions League and Europa League respectively. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Wrexham 'in talks with outgoing Leicester star on free transfer' as Welsh club eye up Premier League additions this summer

Wrexham are in talks to sign Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward on a free transfer following his departure from Leicester City, according to a report. The 31-year-old will leave the King Power Stadium when his deal expires at the end of the season. He has attracted the interest of the Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney-owned club. Ward made just five appearances in all competitions for the Foxes last term as the side were relegated to the Championship. A move to Wrexham, who will be playing in the second tier next term after three successive promotions, will see Ward return to the club where he came through as a youngster, though he never made a senior appearance for the side. According to Sky Sports' Rob Dorsett, the Welshman is in negotiations with the club over a move. Wrexham are keen to add Premier League quality to their ranks this summer and have been linked with the likes of Ben Davies, Danny Ings and Tom Cairney. On Sunday, Mail Sport reported that the side are still interested in signing Davies despite Tottenham exercising their option to extend the defender's contract by 12 months at the weekend. Davies has been a Spurs player since 2014 and he featured in 28 games under Ange Postecoglou last season, despite not being a member of the manager's first-choice XI. Davies has played 358 games for Tottenham in total, operating both as a left back and a central defender. Davies recently saw his contract extended until June 2026, which means Wrexham would likely need to pay Spurs a modest transfer fee to land him this summer. Tottenham's willingness to let Davies leave could depend on whether or not they are successful in their attempts to sign Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson looks set for a busy summer following his side's promotion from League One to the Championship. Davies has never played below the top tier of English football, having been a Premier League player for his entire club career to date. The 32-year-old made 71 Premier League appearances for Swansea between 2012 and 2014. He has played a further 242 Premier League games for Spurs.
