HBO Max Pulls the Plug on Bookie After Two Seasons

In a surprising move, HBO Max has decided to end its well-received comedy series Bookie after just two seasons, leaving fans of the show disheartened. The series, which wrapped up its second season in December 2024, will not return for a third, marking the end of its run on the streaming platform.
A Brief but Memorable Run
Bookie first premiered in November 2023, captivating audiences with its sharp humor and gritty take on the world of sports betting. Created by Chuck Lorre and Nick Bakay, the show followed a high-stakes narrative filled with chaotic and comedic moments. Its debut season set the tone for a story that blended laughs with the unpredictable nature of its characters' lives. The second season, released a little over a year later, upped the ante with even more daring plotlines and complex situations, further endearing the series to its loyal fanbase.
Despite its popularity, the show's fate was sealed, as HBO Max opted not to renew it. The decision reflects the often unpredictable nature of the streaming industry, where even fan-favorite series can face abrupt cancellations, leaving viewers without closure.
HBO Max's Statement on the Cancellation
In a statement shared with Variety, an HBO Max spokesperson expressed gratitude for the show's creative team and cast, led by comedian Sebastian Maniscalco. 'For two seasons, creators Chuck Lorre and Nick Bakay, along with their talented cast, brought laughter and insight into the world of sports betting,' the spokesperson said. 'While we won't be proceeding with a third season, we're thankful for the opportunity to have worked with such an incredible team on this hilarious comedy.'
A Stellar Cast
Bookie boasted a talented ensemble, with Sebastian Maniscalco at the helm as the lead. The cast also featured Omar Dorsey as Rayfield 'Ray' Ballard, Andrea Anders as Sandra, Vanessa Ferlito as Lorraine Colavito, Jorge Garcia as Hector, and Maxim Swinton as Anthony. Additional notable performances came from Rob Corddry as Walt Dinty and Selina Kaye as Janelle. The show also included recurring appearances by actors like Arnetia Walker, Toby Huss, and Dale Dickey, adding depth to its vibrant world.
The Streaming Landscape and Fan Reactions
The cancellation of Bookie highlights the challenges faced by shows in the competitive streaming market. Fans have taken to social media to express their disappointment, with many praising the series for its unique premise and strong performances. While the show's conclusion is a loss for its dedicated viewers, its two seasons remain available on HBO Max for those looking to revisit or discover its comedic charm.
As the streaming giant moves forward with new projects, the end of Bookie serves as a reminder of the fleeting nature of even the most promising series. For now, fans can hold onto the laughter and chaos of the show's memorable run, while hoping for future projects from its talented cast and creators.

Drake Debuts His Latest Superstar Collaboration At No. 1

Drake is accustomed to reaching No. 1s on the Billboard charts, and his latest smash adds several more winners to his already-historic tally. The rapper has been one of the most successful names in American music for more than a decade, and he often launches new cuts directly in the top spot. That is true again this frame with 'Which One,' his new collaboration with U.K. star Central Cee. While it misses one major throne by a single spot, it still opens as a champion on multiple lists. Three New No. 1s for 'Which One' 'Which One' starts at No. 1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs, Rap Streaming Songs, and Rap Digital Song Sales charts this week. The track is a major smash on streaming platforms – which is a common occurrence for the Canadian hip-hop talent – and even a bestseller, though only when looking specifically at rap. Drake's Career Totals Reach New Heights As 'Which One' arrives, Drake has now collected 27 No. 1s on the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs chart, 22 on the Rap Streaming Songs list, and 25 on the Rap Digital Song Sales tally. On each roster, he has earned well over 120 top 10s — a feat no other rapper has matched. 'Which One' Opens High on Other Rankings Beyond its trio of debuts at No. 1, 'Which One' enters inside the top 10 on several other Billboard tallies. The cut opens at No. 8 on the Streaming Songs chart, No. 3 on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales lists, and in the runner-up spot on the Hot Rap Songs roster. On that last ranking, Drake is held at bay by Kendrick Lamar and SZA's 'Luther,' which extends its run as the longest leader in the chart's history. Another Hot 100 Win for Drake On the all-genre Hot 100, 'Which One' begins at No. 23, marking Drake's three-hundred-and-sixtieth career entry. That is significantly more than any other artist has managed, and he extends his lead over every other artist yet again. The collaboration also earns a quick start on the Rap Airplay chart, beginning its time at No. 25. Following What Did I Miss?' The new cut comes just a month after Drake's solo single 'What Did I Miss?,' which is dipping on most lists but still climbing to new highs on the Radio Songs, R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, and Rap Airplay charts. Both tracks are expected to be featured on his upcoming album Iceman, which is rumored to be released later this year. A Shift Back to Rap on 'Which One' Earlier in 2025, Drake teamed with PartyNextDoor on a joint project heavy on R&B-leaning tracks titled Some Sexy Songs 4 U. 'Which One' brings him back to a more assertive rap style, pairing his own verses with Cee's in another team-up for the two.

Gellar was photographed on the set of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot in Los Angeles on Thursday, Aug. 7, giving fans their first look at her back in action for the highly anticipated series. In the photos, Gellar is wearing a bright red, long-sleeved, deep-V dress with a floral embellishment that hits just above the knee. Some snaps show Gellar's heels that fit with the monochromatic look, while all reveal the fuel that keeps the supernatural Slayer ready to go: a cup of coffee. After years of shutting down interest in returning as Buffy, Gellar began changing her tune within the past year. PEOPLE confirmed in February that a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series was in the works at Hulu with Gellar, the leading lady of the original series, which ran for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003, slated to return. Oscar winner Chloé Zhao is directing the pilot and executive producing, while Nora and Lila Zuckerman are writing, showrunning and executive producing. Gellar is also executive producing alongside Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui and Dolly Parton — who was an uncredited producer on the original series through her company Sandollar Entertainment. Gellar later chimed in to share more details about how the project had come about and to tell fans, "This will be for you." "I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit Buffy and her world, but it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right," she wrote in an Instagram post. "This has been a long process, and it's not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there." The reboot series has been gaining steam over the last few months. In March, Gellar told PEOPLE the Buffy reboot was "progressing probably faster than I'd anticipated." A few months later, in May, Gellar shared the moment she offered Ryan Kiera Armstrong the role of the newest Chosen One. "How do you feel about helping me save the world?" Gellar asked the up-and-coming actress in the sweet video. "Will you stand by my side and save the world?" A clearly emotional Armstrong agreed, and Gellar told her, "Welcome to new Sunnydale." Last month, Gellar shared a behind-the-scenes look from what appears to be a table read for the Buffy reboot, with one photo showing her namecard and another showing a script. "Baby steps," she captioned the post. On Aug. 1, Gellar shared a video of her and Armstrong in the gym, captioning it: "Warrior 1 and 2 We don't sweat … we sparkle."
