New Hui Fen sets sights on PWBA Player of the Year award after clinching second title in three days
SINGAPORE – After securing back-to-back titles on the Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) Tour, Singapore's New Hui Fen has set her sights on an even bigger prize – the circuit's Player of the Year award.
The national bowler is now the front runner for the accolade, having captured her second title of 2025 on June 2 by defeating Latvia's Diana Zavjalova 235-187 in the title match of the Rock 'n' Roll Open.
Her latest triumph at Yorktown Lanes in Ohio marked her second win in three days at the same venue. The 33-year-old had clinched the BowlTV Open on May 31.
In an interview with the PWBA, she said: 'Winning Player of the Year is something I've dreamt of.
'Last year, I was close but (Sin Li) Jane bowled so well, but maybe this year is my year.'
Malaysia's Sin became the first Asian to win the accolade in 2024 after claiming four titles, including two Majors.
New was among the 16 bowlers who qualified for the match-play round after placing fifth in qualifying with 2,739 pinfalls.
In the best-of-five match-play bracket, she opened with a 3-2 win against Sweden's Anneli Blomqvist in the round-of-16, followed by a 3-0 sweep of American Jillian Martin.
In the semi-finals, she edged past Jordan Snodgrass of the United States 245-244 to reach the championship match against Zavjalova, who had earlier defeated Julia Bond 267-234.
Both bowlers were on even footing through five frames in the final, but the Singaporean reeled off four consecutive strikes from frames six to nine to finish with 235 to Zavjalova's 187 and earn the US$10,000 (S$12,900) top prize.
Fittingly, New flashed a rock hand sign as she posed with the trophy after her win. She said: 'I'm very happy and grateful for this back-to-back win. I'm happy that my hard work is paying off and grateful to have this opportunity to perform at my best.
'It's been years of intentional training and showing up every day at the gym and on the lanes.'
Next on the calendar for Singapore's bowlers is the June 5-7 PWBA Waterloo Open and the June 10-17 US Women's Open, before they return home.
They will be back in the US for the Aug 5-12 2025 PWBA Tour Championship Week, which includes three events, culminating in the season-ending PWBA Tour Championship.
New, the PWBA 2016 Rookie of the Year, is hoping to continue the form that has brought her tally of PWBA titles to four in a decorated career that also includes medals on the world stage.
On what keeps her going, she said: 'I treat my bowling as a game and I'm a character in that game of bowling – I'm trying my best to level up in every aspect of the game, so that I can be consistent at every competition.'
With New's two wins and Shayna Ng's victory at the Topeka Open in May, Singapore has now captured trophies in three of the five PWBA National Tour events so far.
Singapore Bowling Federation president Valerie Teo said: 'Hui Fen's latest victory at the PWBA Rock 'n' Roll Open is another incredible testament to her resilience and world-class ability, and it caps off what has been a phenomenal run for Singapore bowling.
'We're incredibly proud of what our bowlers have achieved so far this season. With two wins under her belt already, Hui Fen is currently the front runner for the PWBA Player of the Year award through five events.
'While there's still a long way to go, it's exciting to see her in such strong form and in the running for one of the tour's highest honours .'

Squiban of UAE Team ADQ finished one minute and nine seconds ahead of compatriot Juliette Labous (FDJ-Suez) in second place. Squiban stayed in the peloton led by yellow jersey holder Kimberley Le Court Pienaar (AG Insurance-Soudal), as mountains classification leader Elise Chabbey (FDJ-Suez) led the arduous 10-km climb to Col du Beal, before breaking away on the ascent to Col du Chansert. The 23-year-old soon built a lead of over a minute and comfortably took the win in the 123.7km ride from Clermont-Ferrand to Ambert, becoming the second French rider to claim a stage in the event after Cedrine Kerbaol took stage six last year. Mauritian Le Court was the third to cross the finish line as she retained her lead in the general classification. The Tour continues on Friday with a hilly 159.7km ride from Bourg-en-Bresse to Chambery. REUTERS

Ferrari extend Fred Vasseur's contract as F1 team boss

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur was key to persuading Lewis Hamilton to join the team this season. BUDAPEST – Ferrari announced a multi-year contract extension with Formula One team boss Fred Vasseur on July 31, ending immediate speculation about the Frenchman's future at the helm. Vasseur, 57, has been in the post since the beginning of 2023 and he was key to persuading seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton to join from Mercedes this season. But his tenure was questioned earlier in the year with reports suggesting that Ferrari had sounded out Christian Horner, the Briton who was sacked by Red Bull earlier in July and has yet to comment on what he will do next. 'Today we want to recognise what has been built and commit to what still needs to be achieved,' said Ferrari chief executive Benedetto Vigna in a statement released ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. 'It reflects our trust in Fred's leadership, a trust rooted in shared ambition, mutual expectations and clear responsibility. Under Fred's leadership, Ferrari is united, focused and committed to continuous improvement. 'The trust placed in him reflects the team's confidence in its strategic direction and reinforces a shared determination to deliver the results that Ferrari's fans, drivers and team members expect and deserve.' Ferrari are second in the championship after 13 of the season's 24 races but a massive 268 points adrift of dominant champions McLaren. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Ferrari highlighted Vasseur's ability to lead under pressure, as well as bring change to the team. 'I'm grateful for the trust Ferrari continues to place in me. This renewal is not just a confirmation – it's a challenge to keep progressing, to stay focused, and to deliver,' said Vasseur in the statement. 'Over the past 30 months, we've laid strong foundations, and now we must build on them with consistency and determination. We know what's expected, and we're all fully committed to meeting those expectations and taking the next step forward together.' Hamilton made a passionate defence of Vasseur in Canada last month amid speculation the Ferrari team boss could be replaced. 'I love working with Fred. Fred's the main reason I'm in this team and I got the opportunity to be here, which I'm forever grateful for. And we're in this together,' said the 40-year-old. 'Things aren't perfect but for me, I'm here to work with the team but also with Fred. I want Fred here. I do believe Fred is the person to take us to the top.' Ferrari last won a championship in 2008, the year Hamilton took his first drivers' crown with McLaren. The last driver to be champion with Ferrari was Kimi Raikkonen in 2007. REUTERS

No let up as Lions put out strongest side for final Australia test

SYDNEY - British & Irish Lions coach Andy Farrell has made only two changes to his starting team for final test against Australia on Saturday with his sights firmly focused on sealing a 3-0 series sweep. With the series already won after last week's victory in Melbourne, Farrell resisted the temptation to give squad players a run and said he had selected a team he thought was best able to finish the tour with a third test win. "It would mean the world to us, it's something that we promised ourselves that we were going to chase after," he told a news conference on Thursday. "It's a big ask, but it's something that we're determined to do. This is the best 23 to take the group forward." Farrell said one of the most pleasing elements of the tour had been the way all the players had bought into the concept of squad unity, regardless of whether they were selected for the tests or not. "It touches you, it really does," he said. "It touches you in the sense of how much it means to them. For example, you come in after such a big victory on Saturday night (and) the people that were celebrating the most were the guys that hadn't put the shirt on." Blair Kinghorn, who missed the first test because of a knee injury, replaces James Lowe on the left wing as he did during last week's win in Melbourne, while James Ryan starts in the second row in place of Ollie Chessum. The starting back row and halfback pairing remain the same for the third consecutive match, while Tadhg Furlong will start his ninth straight Lions test in the front row. "It's amazing," Farrell said of the Irish prop. "It's been well documented how much he loves playing for the Lions ... and it isn't just the performances that have been through the roof, it's also his manner on a Lions tour as well. "I've never seen him in such good spirits, so he's ready to go again." Captain Maro Itoje will start his eighth straight Lions test having played the first match of the 2017 series in New Zealand off the bench. "Look at the quality of player they are," Farrell said. "Look at the standing that they have with any group that they represent. Those two lads epitomise what it takes to be a top level international player."
