CCB finds drug peddler they arrested last year still operating from prison
This has again raised questions over security at the prison complex. How can inmates use cell phones despite state-of-the-art jammers is a question that has been dogging the prison for nearly a year now. During a raid on the prison against this accused, he reportedly managed to destroy the cell phone.
Based on the findings of a probe, CCB officials recently seized ₹8.7 lakh, part of the proceeds of the crime from different bank accounts after obtaining a court order under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) Act, 1976.
According to the police, the accused Amir Khan was arrested by CCB officials in November, 2024, in Amruthahalli and the police recovered MDMA crystals worth ₹71 lakh from him. The accused was booked under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and remanded in judicial custody and lodged at the Central Prison.
However, when the CCB recently unearthed another drug racket and arrested a peddler, he reportedly confessed that he was supplying the drugs on behalf of Amir Khan, who was operating from the prison. Further investigation revealed that the accused used to get instructions on WhatsApp from Amir Khan and would supply the drugs to consumers through the 'drop location' method.
Based on this information, officials obtained the body warrant and took Amir Khan into custody which revealed that the money from the drug trade was being transferred to bank accounts belonging to his relatives. The accounts have been traced and the money seized.
The CCB officials invoked SAFEM (FOP) Act, 1976 and NDPS Act, 1985 to seize the proceeds of the crime. The accused challenged the CCB move, but was turned down by the court, sources said.

HRF and HRW demands criminal prosecution against police personnel
The Human Rights Forum (HRF) and the Human Rights Watch (HRW) demanded criminal prosecution of police personnel responsible for the killing of three Maoist armed squad members on the morning of June 18, 2025 in the forest area of Rampachodavaram mandal in Alluri Sitharama Raju district, Andhra Pradesh. In a statement released by HRF on Monday (July 21), they noted that those involved must be booked under relevant provisions of the law, including murder and the SC, ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. It is imperative that an independent, impartial investigation — either by the CBI or under Supreme Court monitoring — be taken up. It cannot be entrusted to the local police, regular or special, since they are implicated in the crime, as HRF's AP and TS coordination committee member V. Krishna said. A three-member HRF and HRW team on July 18, 2025 visited the Rampachodavaram Agency area on a fact-finding into the 'encounter'. 'We spoke with Adivasis of several villages in the Vemulakonda and Akuru panchayats as well as residents of Kintukuru, a remote habitation. The version of the police that a combing party of Greyhounds personnel were fired upon by the Maoists and the retaliatory fire in self-defence resulted in the death of three Maoists is a patent falsehood,' Mr. Krishna told The Hindu on Monday. The rights activists alleged that the three Maoists were ambushed and executed in a burst of one-sided firing by the Greyhounds in the early morning of June 18. The Maoists had encamped deep in the forest area at a location about 3.5 km to the West of Kintukuru village. The camp is at a place referred locally as 'Oota mamidi' a perennial spring abutting a mango tree. Just behind it is a rivulet that flows East to merge with the Pamuleru vaagu. The three Maoists had camped at that spot for over two weeks. A large contingent of Greyhounds went via Kintukuru (Akuru panchayat) past midnight of June 17. They evidently had precise detail of the camp location, which they surrounded from two sides to the South. The Greyhounds opened fire at daybreak, killing all three Maoists. There was no exchange of fire — no crossfire — only a targeted execution. The Greyhounds could have easily apprehended the three alive but they chose to kill them instead, the HRF and HRW members alleged. The three Maoists killed were Gajarla Ravi (of Velishala village in Chityala mandal, Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, Telangana), who was also a member of the Central Committee of the banned Maoist party, Venkata Ravivarma Chaitanya (of Karakavanipalem in Pendurthi mandal, Visakhapatnam district, A.P.) and Kovvasi Anju, an Adivasi from Bodagubal village, Konta block, Sukma district of Chattisgarh. The bodies were taken to the Rampachodavaram Area Hospital the same evening, but the post-mortem was deliberately delayed until the next day. Relatives were forced to wait, plead, and it was only after sustained media pressure that they ultimately received the decomposed bodies late on the night of June 19. By the time they were brought home, the bodies were infested with worms, HRF A.P. State general secretary Y Rajesh said. Since January 2024, over 440 Maoists and unarmed civilians — preponderantly Adivasis in Chattisgarh — have been killed in encounters, many of them allegedly staged, they alleged. 'We call on the Central and State governments in Maoist-affected regions to immediately halt this campaign,' HRW A.P. State president Balu Akkisa said. HRF and HRW are of the opinion that the Maoists' repeated offers to cease hostilities and pursue peace talks warrants the government's utmost seriousness and constructive engagement.

As HC acquits all 12 convicts in 2006 Mumbai blasts case, pressure mounts on Maharashtra govt to move SC
After the unexpected verdict from the high court, the state government now may challenge it and move the Supreme Court. The bench comprising Justices Anil Kilor and Shyam Chandak asserted that the prosecution had 'utterly failed' to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt, and found the statements of the prosecution witnesses unreliable. The court questioned the authenticity of witnesses' statements, asking how they remembered the accused about 100 days after the blast, when their statements were recorded. Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has acquitted all the 12 men convicted in the 7/11 Mumbai train blasts case of 2006, overturning a 2015 verdict by a special court that had awarded death penalty to five and life terms to the other seven. ThePrint tried to reach Advocate Yug Chaudhry, one of the lawyers of the convicts, but he declined to comment. On 7 July, 2006, blasts had rocked the first class compartments of seven local trains in Mumbai's western suburbs within the span of 11 minutes, leaving 187 dead and 829 injured. Special public prosecutor and BJP Rajya Sabha nominee Ujjwal Nikam told media persons, 'If this evidence doesn't stand in high court, then who is responsible for it? Was the investigation flawed? Or was the evidence wrong? What happened? The post mortem of this will take place in the days to come. But today's acquittal is quite serious, and I am confident the government will appeal against this in the Supreme Court.' The pressure for the Maharashtra government to move the top court is mounting, with even BJP leaders appealing to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to do so. Senior BJP leader Kirit Somaiya told media persons, 'This verdict is very shocking. There might be some shortcomings in legal representation, investigation of this 2006 case. These terrorists need to be given capital punishment. I have already appealed to the chief minister to form a good legal team, and challenge this in the Supreme Court. Mumbai deserves justice.' A total of 13 men were charged in the case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) provisions pertaining to murder and criminal conspiracy, Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), 1999, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967. The prosecution had alleged that the plan was hatched by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in Pakistan, and was executed with the help of members of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). In 2015, a special court in Mumbai had convicted 12 of the accused. In its 1,839-page long verdict, it awarded five of these convicts—agreeing with the public prosecutor who called them 'merchants of death'—death sentences, and the rest were handed life terms. The five given the death penalty were Kamal Ahmed Mohd Vakil Ansari, Faisal Ataur Rahman Shaikh, Ehtesham Qutubuddin Siddiqui, Naveed Hussain Khan and Asif Khan—all convicted for planting the bombs. The other seven convicted were Tanveer Ahmed Mohammed Ibrahim Ansari, Mohammed Majid Mohammed Shafi, Shaikh Mohammed Ali Alam Shaikh, Mohammed Sajid Margub Ansari, Muzammil Ataur Rahman Shaikh, Suhail Mehmood Shaikh and Zameer Ahmed Latiur Rehman Shaikh. Only Abdul Wahid Din Mohammad Shaikh was acquitted during the trial. Shaikh had been charged with harbouring some of the accused after they had planted the bombs, but was granted the benefit of doubt as the court had felt that the allegations against him had not been proven. 'I am extremely happy. All the relatives and the accused persons had tears of joy. The judgment comes after 19 years. Our claim that we were all framed has been proven right today,' Shaikh told ThePrint. After the 2015 verdict, the 12 had challenged it in the high court, which was also hearing the confirmation of death sentences. Death penalties have to be confirmed by the relevant high court after a trial court awards them. The high court held hearings in the matter from July 2024 to January this year.
