PM Anwar arrives to officiate Hawana 2025 celebration
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has arrived at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) to officiate the highlight of the National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 celebration.
He arrived at 11.45am and was welcomed by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and his deputy Teo Nie Ching.
Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Dr Zaliha Mustafa; Communications Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa; Bernama Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai; Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin; and Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the director of Hawana 2025.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to address approximately 1,000 guests, comprising local and international media practitioners.
Themed "Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', Hawana 2025 is organised by the Communications Ministry, with Bernama as the implementing agency, and supported by various media organisations and strategic industry partners.
The Prime Minister will also present the Hawana 2025 Special Award and the Hawana 2025 Award, to individuals who have made significant contributions in the field of journalism. In addition, he will present prizes to the winners of the Hawana-DBP 2025 Pantun Festival, held on May 31.
In addition, he is scheduled to present contributions from the Tabung Kasih@Hawana to three veteran journalists in need, as a gesture of appreciation and concern for media professionals who have shaped the landscape of journalism in the country.
Representatives from media associations, journalist clubs, and news organisations from Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, Kuwait, and China have gathered in the capital since Friday, participating in a series of programmes held in conjunction with the prestigious event, now in its fifth edition.
The Hawana celebration was first introduced in 2018 to honour the contributions of journalists to national development, with May 29 chosen as the official date, in recognition of the first publication of "Utusan Melayu' in 1939. - Bernama

Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said there is ample room for the information department to enhance the way it communicates information to the public. (Bernama pic) LUMUT : The information department must disseminate information on key government policies to the public within 24 hours of their announcement, says communications minister Fahmi Fadzil. He said the move is crucial to ensure the people, especially the 1,878 Madani communities nationwide, receive accurate and verified information promptly. 'So, the task I have given the information department is to ensure that Madani communities become the first group to receive accurate information on any announced policy. 'It's a heavy responsibility, but this is their role moving forward,' he said at an event organised by the information department at Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL-Mimet) here today. Present were communications ministry secretary-general Fauzi Isa and information department director-general Julina Johan. Fahmi said there is ample room for the department to enhance the way it communicates information to the public, adding that he had discussed with the management the best mechanisms to be implemented as early as next week. 'I believe the district information offices will certainly carry out their duties well. All of us must work very hard to ensure that the Madani communities under our care consistently receive accurate information,' he said. Earlier, Fahmi met with nearly 150 Madani community members from Perak and Penang.

New mobile system launched to enhance disaster communications

CYBERJAYA : The communications ministry has launched the Mobile Integrated Radio and Internet Communication System (Prime), a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening disaster and emergency response capabilities in public areas. Its minister, Fahmi Fadzil, said Prime is part of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's efforts to support agencies such as the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) in ensuring reliable communication coverage in disaster zones. 'This system is not just for frontline responders, but also for victims and those awaiting rescue,' he told a press conference following the launch of Prime at MCMC's headquarters here today. Fahmi said Prime is a vehicle-based mobile communications system equipped with satellite technology, cellular networks, two-way radios, WiFi, and drones. He said the implementation of Prime would strengthen MCMC's collaboration with key strategic agencies involved in disaster and emergency management, enhancing both the efficiency and resilience of response and communication efforts. Prime will also support community outreach initiatives such as the National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi), serving as a mobile digital hub that enables on-site internet access and community activities. Three Prime units will first be developed in phases, stationed at MCMC's headquarters to support operations in Peninsular Malaysia. 'The remaining two units will be completed by the end of the year and deployed to MCMC's offices in Sabah and Sarawak,' he said, adding that each unit costs RM1 million to build. Fahmi said the ministry would assess potential improvements to features not currently included in Prime. 'For example, with drones, we're exploring ways to deliver and receive information using microphones and speakers. Victims who are trapped can speak directly to rescue teams,' he said. Fahmi said Prime units could be tested as early as October, particularly in states affected by the northeast monsoon.

No need to dissolve Economy Ministry: PM

Anwar explained that the Economy Ministry, which was formerly the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) under the Prime Minister's Department, was elevated to a full ministry during Pakatan Harapan's first administration. Advertisement 'There is no issue of a change (in ministerial structure). The structure is determined by the Cabinet and me, so for now, I don't see any need for a reshuffle,' he told reporters after officiating at Energy Asia 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today. On the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), scheduled to be tabled in Parliament this July, Anwar said it is a collective responsibility of the Cabinet, with the Economy Ministry serving as the main secretariat. He added that various adjustments and reforms are underway in light of the changing economic landscape, including tariff revisions that are impacting key national projections. 'Last week, we also held a meeting to hear input from ministries on policy adjustments being introduced,' he said. On May 28, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Rafizi Ramli tendered his resignation and went on leave, which ends today. On the resignation of Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Anwar said the matter has not been finalised as he wishes to allow time and space before making a decision. 'I usually wait, give them a chance. Reflect, consider, and I will give my view. If possible, I'd like him to continue his service; there's still time before his resignation takes effect,' he said. Nik Nazmi also tendered his resignation on May 28 and has gone on leave until July 3. When asked about the proposed adjustments involving RON95 petrol prices, Anwar reiterated that it will not affect 85 to 90 per cent of the population. He said the opposition's claims that people are suffering due to the subsidy rationalisation policy are nothing more than desperate political gimmicks aimed at creating a negative image of the government. Anwar said the government's move towards subsidy rationalisation is a critical step to ensure sufficient national resources are channelled effectively to benefit the lower-income group. "We want to have enough resources to help the poor, to enhance the quality of education and to provide better public services, including in healthcare," he said.
