BBC axing 'flawlessly directed' period drama with 'sublime cinematography'
Period drama enthusiasts have mere days remaining to watch a critically acclaimed film lauded for its sophisticated direction and breathtaking visuals before it disappears from BBC iPlayer.
Atonement (2007) brings Ian McEwan's best-selling novel to life on screen.
Against the setting of pre-war Britain and the Second World War, the tale unfolds in 1935 at a grand country house where a solitary misinterpretation by young Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan) wreaks havoc on her elder sister Cecilia (Keira Knightley) and Cecilia's beloved Robbie Turner (James McAvoy).
Briony's fabricated allegation leads to Robbie's incarceration and eventual military service.
The story then traces each character through wartime chaos and decades of remorse and isolation, delving into themes of romance, shame and the quest for forgiveness, reports the Express.
Under Joe Wright's direction, Atonement boasts a distinguished ensemble featuring James McAvoy as Robbie Turner, Keira Knightley as Cecilia Tallis, Saoirse Ronan as Briony Tallis (alongside Romola Garai and Vanessa Redgrave playing mature versions), Brenda Blethyn, Benedict Cumberbatch and Juno Temple.
The picture is celebrated for its artistic brilliance - "flawless direction and cinematography that is nothing short of sublime," as one critic noted on film review site Rotten Tomatoes - and features the legendary five-minute continuous shot across Dunkirk beach.
Atonement's haunting musical composition by Dario Marianelli consistently receives widespread acclaim. As another review notes: "The soundtrack, the acting, the cinematography is just masterful... If you want to experience what a great piece of considered cinema looks like, this is it."
Atonement garnered universal praise from critics when it hit cinemas.
The film scooped the Oscar for Best Original Score (Dario Marianelli), two BAFTAs including Best Production Design, and a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Drama.
The movie secured seven Academy Award nominations altogether - including Best Picture - and catapulted Saoirse Ronan to international stardom.
"If you enjoy yearning, heartbreak, and crying into your pillow at 2 AM, Atonement is the film for you... By the end, you'll be staring at the screen, tear-streaked and questioning life... A masterpiece in pain", one devoted viewer declared.
Atonement will be removed from the BBC iPlayer catalogue on Thursday, August 8.

She was married to a Hollywood icon before becoming a silver screen siren in her own right...can you guess who?
She stole the heart of a true movie giant with her bombshell looks and then landed iconic film roles in the 1960s and '70s. After landing her Oscar-nominated role alongside Natalie Wood she went on to turn heads again years later in a hit Warren Beatty movie. The former model and actress, now age 88, was once a silver screen siren known just as much for her beauty and long list of admirers. She went on to marry second husband Stanley Fimberg in 1985 but also had high profile relationships with Johnny Carson and TV's original Tarzan, Ron Ely. Now 88, she no longer does much film work but still makes headlines for her public appearances such as sitting courtside at an LA Lakers game, and more recently, admitting she still has a very active romantic life. Can you guess who it is? This iconic glamor girl from the '60s and '70s was spotted looking as fashionable as ever while taking her adorable pooches for a walk in Los Angeles last week It's Dyan Cannon! The Hollywood icon was seen taking her dogs for a walk around her LA neighborhood, in exclusive Daily Mail photos. Cannon looked almost unrecognizable in oversized designer shades and with her famous blonde mane tied up in a high ponytail. She still looked stylish in a black top, leopard leggings, and leather sneakers. She accessorized with bronze drop cross earrings and a black designer purse. Cannon appeared sprightly but at one point did have to wrangle the pups through the streets as one dog seemed less interested in the stroll. Despite largely keeping away from the spotlight these days, Cannon made headlines back in April for sharing details about her still-active dating life. Exclusive Daily Mail photos show the Hollywood star ran into some trouble trying to wrangle her pups on the sidewalk after one showed a little resistance While attending the 10th Annual Hollywood Beauty Awards, she revealed that she still likes to juggle multiple 'friends with benefits' — and there are still 'more to come,' according to People. When she was asked if she was still dating, she responded with an 'of course,' before clarifying that she's only interested if the person is 'somebody very special.' She added that she was seeing 'several special [people]...' at the moment, adding that she had multiple physical connections with partners that didn't come with the baggage of relationships and commitment. 'I have friends with benefits, yes,' she admitted. Cannon began acting in the 50s and early 1960s with various television guest roles, but it was her relationship with film superstar Cary Grant – who was 33 years her senior – that elevated her public image. He asked to meet her after seeing her in Ely's diving drama Malibu Run. The two married in 1965 and had one daughter, Jennifer, before their divorce three years later. It wasn't until after their split that Dyan became a major Hollywood star in her own right thanks to her Oscar-nominated role in the counter-culture hit Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice which follows two friendly couples who experiment with swinging. Wood, Robert Culp and Elliott Gould were the others in the ménage à quatre. She also appeared opposite Sean Connery in The Anderson Tapes and in Otto Preminger's Such Good Friends – which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She followed that up with two more Oscar nods – for the short film Number One and as the gold-digging Julia Farnsworth in Warren Beatty's Heaven Can Wait. Besides Grant, Cannon was also married to businessman Stanley Fimberg, whom she divorced in 1991 after a six-year union. Other notable past relationships include chat show legend Carson, Ely, comedian Mort Sahl, talent agent Ron Weisner and actors Armond Assante, Hy Chase and Michael Nouri. Though she has acted less frequently in recent years, Cannon turned to writing with the publication of her memoir Dear Cary: My Life With Cary Grant in 2011. The book was a bestseller and came after she had turned down lucrative offers to write a memoir about her marriage for decades.

Channel 5 is set to air the first series of All Creatures Great and Small once again, but watching it will be bittersweet for fans of the TV show The beloved series All Creatures Great and Small is making a comeback on our telly screens, but it's set to be a bittersweet experience for fans. Channel 5 will be airing the first series of All Creatures Great and Small once again, with the inaugural episode scheduled for Monday, August 11, at 4pm. First hitting our screens in September 2020, All Creatures Great and Small has since been adapted into five series, allowing fans to journey back to the show's humble beginnings. Revisiting the debut episode, You've Got to Dream, will undoubtedly stir up nostalgia among viewers. However, it'll also be tinged with sadness as we see Dame Diane Rigg reprising her role as Mrs Pumphrey. The late actress graced the first season of All Creatures Great and Small with her presence, before being succeeded by Patricia Hodge in the second series, reports the Express. Diane passed away in 2020 from lung cancer at the ripe age of 92, marking All Creatures Great and Small as one of her final television endeavours. She featured in a total of two episodes. Patricia then stepped into the shoes of Mrs Pumphrey during the second season, which premiered in September 2021. The main cast of All Creatures Great and Small includes Samuel West, Anna Madeley, Nicholas Ralph, Callum Woodhouse, and Rachel Shenton. James Anthony-Rose joined the ensemble in the fourth series. Set against the backdrop of Northern England in the 1930s and 40s, the series is based on Alf Wight's books about a Yorkshire veterinary surgeon, published under the pseudonym James Herriot. All Creatures Great and Small centres on a trio of vets in the Yorkshire Dales, with Samuel West as Siegfried Farnon, Nicholas Ralph as James Herriot, and Callum Woodhouse playing Tristan, Siegfried's younger sibling. The opening episode's blurb for All Creatures Great and Small goes like this: "Newly qualified veterinary surgeon James Herriot travels from his home in Glasgow to the Yorkshire village of Darrowby for a job interview at Siegfried Farnon's practice. Siegfried takes James to his first job treating an abscess in a gelding's hoof. James meets Helen Alderson while treating an injured calf, and she urges him to stand up to Siegfried, who will respect him." It continues: "The locals get James drunk and he mixes up a pair of cats while trying to feed them, resulting in Siegfried almost neutering the wrong one. James manages to prove himself after saving the lives of a cow and her calf, leading Siegfried to offer him a permanent job as his assistant."
