No great work has ever been created under influence of drugs, says Prithviraj Sukumaran
Actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran has debunked the perception in society that creativity in the film industry is fuelled by substance, stating that no great work has ever been created under the influence of any substance.
He was talking after inaugurating 'No Entry,' an anti-drugs campaign to mark the launch of a five-year long project, Substance Abuse Free Environment Village (SAFE), in the Ernakulam Parliament constituency at the Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology on Thursday (June 26, 2025) on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The project initiated by Hibi Eden, MP, will be implemented in a phased manner under Project Venda of Fourth Wave Foundation with the support of the Jain (Deemed-to-be-University) and the Kochi-based Future Kerala Mission.
Mr. Sukumaran said that the fight against drugs can be won only if an older generation, which showed how to enjoy life through their lifestyle, and a new discerning generation capable of making the right choices join hands. He wrapped up his speech with the popular film dialogue 'narcotics is a dirty business.' He then administered the anti-drug speech to students.
In his presidential address, Mr. Eden said that the idea behind the project is to ensure the coordination of people's representatives, educational institutions, and social organisations for the serious cause of protecting students and youngsters from drug menace. The project will be implemented in association with the Kochi Corporation, 6 municipalities, and 24 panchayats. Memorandum of Understanding kits were handed over to the representatives from these local bodies. Around 3,000 school and college students attended the function.
The 'No Entry' campaign proposes a strong declaration by the individual and society in general in a collective resistance against drugs. Preventing the entry of drugs into one's body, life and household remains the core of the campaign. SAFE project is an acclaimed programme against drugs being implemented by the Fourth Wave Foundation under Project Venda for the past 10 years.

Drug awareness campaigns mark International Day Against Drug Abuse
1 2 Madurai/Trichy: In observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a series of awareness events were organised in Madurai and Trichy on Thursday, aiming to educate the public—especially students—about the dangers of substance abuse. In Madurai, a human chain rally was flagged off by Madurai district collector K J Praveen Kumar from the Collectorate. The rally, under the theme "Drug-Free Tamil Nadu," involved around 300 college students raising awareness against drug abuse. At Madurai Medical College, the department of psychiatry organized competitions on topics related to drug abuse prevention, with events such as poetry, poster-making, slogan-writing, and short films. Winners were awarded prizes at a ceremony presided over by the college dean, Dr L Arul Sundaresh Kumar. In a similar event, Madurai city police commissioner J Loganathan launched a drug-free awareness rally organized by the anti-drug club of Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College. Approximately 1,000 students participated, pledging to stay away from drugs. The rally, which proceeded from the college to Pasumalai, featured students carrying placards and raising slogans to discourage drug use. Similar programs were organized by other schools and colleges in the city. In Trichy, over 250 participants took part in a rally organized by the department of psychiatry at KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College, in collaboration with Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital. The rally, which began at the Collector's Office and ended at the college auditorium, was followed by awareness lectures focused on this year's theme: "Breaking the Chains! Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for All. " Trichy district collector V Saravanan administered an anti-drug pledge and flagged off the rally. Dr. S. Kumaravel, Dean of KAP Medical College, emphasized that addiction is a "whirlpool" that can pull people in without their knowledge, urging the public to resist not just narcotics, but also dependencies on tobacco, electronic devices, and internet overuse. Meanwhile, students at Government High School, Kalkandar Fort, participated in an anti-drug program titled "Don't Enter Our Area," aimed at curbing the sale and use of drugs near educational institutions. The event featured speeches by Prabhu, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, and senior defense advocate Saraboji, who warned students about the dangers of evil influences. Ministers to welcome Kanwariyas with flower showers: CM
Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday announced that all her ministers, MLAs and senior government officials will personally receive Kanwariyas with flower showers at every entry point into the city during the upcoming Kanwar Yatra. 'In just the first four months of 2025, Delhi Police arrested over 1,100 individuals involved in drug trafficking,' she said at an event at Yamuna Sports Complex. The Delhi government, police and civil society are working in tandem to combat drug abuse—and public participation is crucial to this mission.' .

Narcotics worth over 1,000cr seized in past 3 years, says Meghalaya CM
Shillong: Meghalaya Police seized narcotics worth over Rs 1,000 crore and filed chargesheets against 422 in the past three years, chief minister Conrad Sangma said. The CM emphasised that the govt is committed not only to law enforcement but also to holistic recovery, involving health systems, education, youth engagement and strong community partnerships. "We cannot look at this as just a law enforcement issue. It is a public health, social and developmental issue. DREAM is our mission to fight this together — as a state, as a people," he said and also led the gathering in a solemn pledge as part of the National Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. The flagship programme — Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM) — is a comprehensive, multi-sectoral initiative that addresses both the supply and demand side of substance abuse. Under the initiative, the govt has committed Rs 50 crore over five years to support rehabilitation centres, especially those run by faith-based and community-led organisations. As part of DREAM's community-based strategy, the govt also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Society for Promotion of Youth and Masses, a national organisation. The partnership aims to create customised toolkits and training modules for schools, teachers, local communities and NGOs to build an informed, drug-resilient society.
