Oregon Football QB target Matt Ponatoski joins Randy Moss with rare accomplishment
Dan Lanning has demonstrated a trend of recruiting dual-sport athletes over the past few years and utilizing players who specialize in sports other than football for the Oregon Ducks. We've seen this most notably with linebacker Bryce Boettcher, who was drafted by the Houston Astros last year, and 5-star tight end commit Kendre Harrison is another example, excelling in both football and basketball.
It appears that the Ducks are after another elite dual-sport athlete in 4-star QB Matt Ponatoski. On Tuesday, it was announced that Ponatoski accomplished a rare feat, winning the Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year for both football and baseball.
According to WCPO's Mike Dyer, Ponatoski is one of only three players to ever accomplish this in the 40 years that Gatorade has been giving out the awards, joining Randy Moss (football and basketball) and Matt Bauer (football and baseball).
Last week it was announced that Ponatoski — the No. 293 player and No. 22 QB in the class — will take an official visit to Oregon on June 20. That will be a massive weekend for the Ducks, with 5-star OT Immanuel Iheanacho, 5-star TE Mark Bowman, 5-star TE Kendre Harrison, and 5-star ATH Jalen Lott all in town as well.

Astros All-Star Closer Josh Hader Place On 15-Day Disabled List With Shoulder Strain

Houston Astros All-Star closer Josh Hader was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained left shoulder. The move, retroactive to Monday, comes after the left-hander reported shoulder discomfort before Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox. "It's (a) punch in the gut," manager Joe Espada said.. "But ... he's seeing doctors right now. We're getting more tests done and hopefully this is not going to be a long-term thing." Espada added that they don't yet know the severity of the injury and should know more after additional testing. Espada said he would not name a closer to fill in while Hader is out, but would use his relievers based on matchups. "I feel good about all those guys," Espada said. Hader, who is in his second season in Houston, is 6-2 with a 2.05 ERA and is tied for third in the majors with 28 saves in 48 appearances this season. To take his spot on the roster, the AL West-leading Astros reinstated right-hander Shawn Dubin from the 15-day injured list. They also designated right-hander Hector Neris for assignment and recalled left-hander Colton Gordon from Triple-A Sugar Land. Reporting by The Associated Press. Oregon Ducks to play Gonzaga Bulldogs in neutral-site basketball game

The Oregon Ducks men's basketball team is finally scheduling a game that fans have wanted to see for quite some time in Eugene. In 2025, Oregon will face off against the Gonzaga Bulldogs on December 21st at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon. CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein was the first to report the news. The Pacific Northwest matchup hasn't occurred since 2019, when Gonzaga came away with a 73-72 overtime victory in the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. The Ducks lead the all-time series 19-4 over the Bulldogs, with the majority of the games dating back over 50 years. The meeting will feature two of the best coaches in the country in Oregon's Dana Altman and Gonzaga's Mark Few, with Altman having 780 career wins to Few's 742. They rank 16th and 22nd, respectively, in head coaching wins in college basketball history. This will be a coveted ticket at the Moda Center, giving fans an early Christmas present with two Pacific Northwest teams facing off. Oregon suspends receiver Jurrion Dickey

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon coach Dan Lanning announced Tuesday that wide receiver Jurrion Dickey has been suspended indefinitely. Dickey, a former five-star recruit, has played in 15 games in two years with the Ducks, but has only had two catches for 14 yards. Lanning did not specify the reasons for Dickey's suspension, but said the team has two team rules, 'be respectful, be on time.' 'There's some pieces of that where I felt like he needed a break from us and we needed a break from that so we could focus on what's in front of us right now," Lanning said. 'Wishing him nothing but the best, as far as success and want to see him get back to where he can be a contributor somewhere; that might be here. That might be somewhere else.' The Ducks were ranked No. 7 in the preseason AP Top 25 Poll. The team was already thin at wide receiver with the loss of Evan Stewart, the Ducks' top returner who injured his knee in the offseason and could miss the season. Florida State transfer Malik Benson, senior Gary Bryant Jr. and redshirt juniors Kyler Kasper and Justius Lowe are expected to help fill the void. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season.
