KUCHING (July 22): Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) MPs gathered at the Parliament building in Kuala Lumpur today for an informal celebration to mark Sarawak Day.
Unable to be in Miri for the official festivities due to the ongoing Dewan Rakyat sitting, the MPs instead came together over a spread of Sarawakian dishes to honour their shared heritage and identity.
Minister of Works and GPS secretary-general, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, said the gathering was a meaningful way to celebrate Sarawak Day, even while fulfilling their parliamentary duties.
'Sometimes, the most meaningful moments are created at the dining table.
'More than just food, today's gathering reflects our bond as one big 'anak Sarawak' family,' Nanta shared in a Facebook post.
Among the local favourites served were Sarawak laksa, mee kolok, nasi goreng dabai, and kuih penyaram.
Present at the gathering were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, and Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib. alexander nanta linggi gps Mps parliament sarawak day

Govt scraps high-value goods tax, adjusts sales tax rates

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has decided not to proceed with the implementation of the high-value goods tax (HVGT), according to the Finance Ministry (MOF). In a written reply on the Parliament website yesterday, the MOF stated, however, that the principles of the HVGT have been incorporated into the revised sales tax structure, with luxury and discretionary items taxed at five or 10 per cent. The ministry said this in response to a question from Datuk Shamshulkahar Mohd Deli (BN-Jempol), who asked about the projected rise in national revenue resulting from fiscal reform measures, including the introduction of HVGT, the digital goods tax, capital gains tax (CGT), low-value goods tax, and the expansion of the SST tax and subsidy rationalisation that are being or will be implemented. The proposal to introduce HVGT was first announced at the revised presentation of Budget 2023 in February 2023. Initially planned to be implemented by May 2024, the government had expected to generate an additional RM700 million annually from it. However, the government at that time indicated that more time was needed to engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure its effective implementation without negatively impacting the economy. Meanwhile, the MOF said the government has taken several steps under direct and indirect taxation to strengthen national revenue collection. Among them is the implementation of the CGT, effective March 1, 2024. 'Based on the current transaction volume and value involving unlisted shares, the government estimates revenue collection of about RM800 million a year,' it said. The sales tax rate revision and the expanded scope of the service tax, effective July 1 2025, are also expected to contribute an additional RM5 billion revenue in 2025, doubling to RM10 billion in 2026. As for diesel subsidy targeting, it has so far generated RM600 million in monthly government savings. Additionally, the low-value goods tax, effective Jan 1, 2024, recorded a collection of about RM500 million for the year 2024. - Bernama

Human rights tribunal, nuclear plans tabled in Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR: The establishment of a Human Rights Tribunal in Malaysia, the potential use of nuclear energy, and a proposal to build vertical schools are among the highlights of today's Dewan Rakyat sitting. According to the Order Paper on the Parliament website, Teresa Kok Suh Sim (PH-Seputeh) will ask the Prime Minister for the latest update on efforts to introduce the tribunal. Tan Kar Hing (PH-Gopeng) is set to ask the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation about the country's preparedness to explore nuclear energy generation, as well as the forms of cooperation currently undertaken with international agencies on the matter. Also of interest is a question from Datuk Muslimin Yahaya (PN-Sungai Besar), who wants details on the Kuala Lumpur City Hall's (DBKL) proposal to build vertical schools ranging from 10 to 17 storeys. Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan) will ask the Foreign Minister whether the federal government plans to involve the Sabah government in any negotiations concerning the Ambalat issue. After the question-and-answer session, the sitting will proceed with the tabling of the Countervailing and Anti-Dumping Duties (Amendment) Bill 2025 for its first reading. The Energy Commission (Amendment) Bill 2025, Electricity Supply (Amendment) Bill 2025, Education (Amendment) Bill 2025, and Mufti (Federal Territories) Bill 2024 are also scheduled for their second readings today. The Dewan Rakyat will sit for 24 days until Aug 28. - Bernama

Abolishing tolls not feasible, says minister

PETALING JAYA: Abolishing highway tolls is not a simple solution as it would require the government to set aside billions of ringgit for highway maintenance and infrastructure, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi told the Dewan Rakyat yesterday. Replying to a supplementary question from Besut MP Datuk Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh, Nanta said the funds could be better allocated to develop infrastructure in states with limited highway access, such as Terengganu, Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak. 'It's not an easy move. If tolls are removed, the government must bear the cost of maintaining these highways and that figure runs into the billions.' He added that a more realistic and sustainable approach would be to reduce toll rates once highway concessionaires have recovered their return on investment (ROI). Nanta's remarks came in response to a question about the government's 2022 manifesto pledge to abolish tolls. In the lead-up to the 2022 general election, Pakatan Harapan promised to eliminate tolls on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) if given the mandate to govern. However, Nanta said a complete removal may not be necessary if concessionaires have already recouped their investments. 'Once the ROI has been achieved, we can revisit the rates, particularly if they are burdensome to the public.' In a related development, Nanta said the government's move to postpone toll hikes at 10 highways is expected to benefit close to one million users, particularly Class 1 vehicle drivers. (Class 1 is the category for trucks, lorries or large and heavy commercial vehicles). He said the decision followed a significant gap between current toll rates and those outlined in concession agreements which permitted increases ranging from 50 sen to RM4.56, or a 79% to 83% hike. 'For example, on the MEX Expressway, the toll rate set for 2025 is RM6.90, but users are currently paying RM3.50 per trip. That's a saving of RM6.80 for a round trip. Over 20 working days, that amounts to RM136 in monthly savings, or RM1,632 annually.' Nanta was responding to a question from Pekan MP Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali on the potential impact on motorists had the toll hikes not been deferred. On July 23, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government had agreed to postpone the planned toll rate increases as part of an 'announcement of appreciation for Malaysians', allowing users to continue paying the current rates. The highways included in the deferment are the MEX Expressway, South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE), Senai–Desaru Expressway (SDE), Duta–Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE) and Kuala Lumpur–Kuala Selangor Expressway (Latar).
