EastEnders casts much-loved actor for special Phil Mitchell episode - and fans will be shocked

Yahoo17-03-2025
EastEnders is set to air a special episode focusing on Phil Mitchell's recovery following his devastating suicide attempt.
During the soap's 40th anniversary episodes in February, Walford legend Phil (played by Steve McFadden) tried to take his own life and was later taken to a mental health unit. In the upcoming instalment, Phil will befriend fellow patient Gaz, played by special guest star Keith Allen, who will help him open up and begin his road to recovery.
The special episode will be set across four weeks, seeing Phil begin treatment to address his inner trauma and understand his depression and symptoms of psychosis. Gaz will bond with Phil, helping him to engage in therapy and group activities after initially being reluctant.

Keith launched his acting career in 1981 when he starred as he played Heckler in the series Wolcott.
The 71-year-old is known for a variety of roles, with highlights including Trainspotting (1996), The Others (2001) and more recently, The Buckingham Murders (2023), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017) and the TV series Robin Hood (2006 - 2009).
Speaking on his guest role, Keith said: "I've written a number one hit single, I've presented Top of the Pops, I've played the lead in the West End and I was at Craven Cottage when we beat Juventus 4-1...Could it get better than that?"
He added: "Well, yes, I've just guested in an episode of EastEnders... What a joy! And what an honour to be a part of Steve McFadden's incredibly moving story line. I may be a resting actor but I now rest in peace."
The BBC soap has worked with several charities including The Samaritans, Rethink Mental Illness, the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), and Mind to ensure Phil's story is portrayed accurately and sensitively.
The show's executive producer Chris Clenshaw has shared his excitement at Keith joining EastEnders, he said: "I'm delighted to welcome the incredibly talented Keith Allen to the cast of EastEnders as he takes on the guest role of Gaz in a special episode focusing on Phil's mental health.
"As Phil struggles to begin treatment, we explore how his relationship with fellow patient Gaz, helps Phil to take the first step in his road to recovery."
Paying tribute to the soap stars, Chris added: "Keith and Steve's performances are both phenomenal, and thoughtfully and sensitively portray the complex realities of mental health recovery and the impact of hypermasculinity."
EastEnders airs Monday - Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and iPlayer

‘Evita' Star James Olivas on Playing a New-Era Juan Perón, Political Parallels, and Puzzles

It's a new week at the London Palladium theater, where the Evita cast is collectively shaking off a bug. 'We were really limping across the finish line this past week,' says James Olivas, who plays leading man Juan Perón. 'We had every swing on and people doing split tracks, which we've never done before, just to get the show up and running. Everyone's incredibly talented, so it worked out.' To his point, the chaos was not in any way obvious to their audience. Reviews of Jamie Lloyd's West End revival of Evita, the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice that first came to the stage in 1978, have highlighted the cast's chemistry and kinetic energy. It's a modern and adrenaline-spiking retelling of Argentina's most famous first lady's story—played by Rachel Zegler—with big rock numbers and Beyoncé-esque hair flips, slaloming through populist politics and celebrity worship. Opposite Zegler is Olivas, a stoic, sinister Perón—and, at 28, an unusually young actor for the role. When we speak, just before call time and warm-ups, Olivas is a beaming, jokey antipode to his character. Diego Andres Rodriguez, who plays Che, waves in the background of our Zoom. (Rodriguez and Olivas share an apartment block in Camden, and a dressing room deep in the Palladium annals.) It's both of their first times in the UK. 'Every day off, we explore as much as we can,' says Olivas. They tried to pitch a trip to Brighton Pride to see headliner Mariah Carey, but couldn't make it work; instead, they went for a Sunday roast at the Greyhound, walked around Kew Gardens, and had drinks in Richmond on the Thames. All the textbook tourist stuff was ticked off weeks into rehearsals. Olivas grew up in Houston, Texas, before moving to Los Angeles for school and college. His focus on football, basketball, and water polo—and plans to eventually follow in his father's footsteps to become a mechanical engineer—shifted after a knee injury, and being exposed to theater in LA. (Constantly hearing him sing in the shower eventually pushed his mom to push him into a community production of Ragtime.) 'From then I did as much as I could,' Olivas says. 'But I thought it was something I would do on the weekends outside of my reliable, steady, nine-to-five job.' His time in conservative Texas had also left him with 'a lot of unlearning to do about what I could be.'

EastEnders actor died broke with no will, records show

EastEnders actor Nicholas Ball died broke and left nothing to his wife, legal documents show. The actor died aged 78 last year following a short battle with illness. He played Terry Bates in the BBC soap and also had roles in Footballers' Wives and Hazell. But records show Ball, of Porchester Square, London, left no will and nothing in his estate. A High Court document shows administration of the estate was granted to his wife Ayda. It reads: 'The application has stated that the gross value of the estate in the United Kingdom amounts to £0 and the net value amounts to £0.' She revealed his death in June last year saying: "It is with the heaviest and broken of hearts, that I share the loss of my beloved Nicky-Nicholas Ball." Ball had been married to actress and psychologist Pamela Stephenson from 1978 to 1984. She left him for comedian Billy Connolly. Ball had a long acting career but reportedly struggled for parts after private eye series Hazell ended. He had played a number of supporting roles in various television series including Z-Cars, Softly Softly: Task Force, The Young Ones, Bergerac, Tales of the Unexpected, Casualty, and Holby City. Director Keith English paid tribute to him after his death, saying: "Fabulous as star of hit TV show 'Hazell' in the 1980s, Nick was a terrific actor - kind and generous. He starred in our short film 'Top Dog' in 2001 in which he was great and we became life-long friends with him and his wife, Ayda Kay. "Indeed, we were honoured when the pair of them asked if they could be married in our garden in 2019. A fabulous affair. "One of our fondest memories was going to see Jerry Goldsmith play The Royal Albert Hall with him and his great friend Mel Smith. "Mel had hired a box for the show. Both men were known hell-raisers and, sure enough, when the four of us rolled up they were both fairly merry and proceeded to football-chant 'There's only one Jerry Goldsmith!' between musical pieces to an uneven response from the rest of the auditorium. "Nick was a loving husband, friend and a wonderful actor. We enjoyed every minute of his company. Farewell and bon voyage."
