The Delhi High Court has asked Lava International to deposit Rs 20.81 crore as security covering all past sales from 2019 until 2024 with the court's registrar general. Alternatively, the court has permitted Lava to submit an unconditional bank guarantee of the same amount from a local bank in favour of its registrar general within eight weeks.Failure to deposit the amount would entitle Dolby International to seek a restraint order from the court preventing Lava from selling any more devices in India using the American company's patents, Justice Amit Bansal said, while directing an expeditious trial in the suit. The directions came on a petition by Swedish firm Dolby International alleging infringement of its Standard Essential Patents of its audio coding technology, enhancing the functionality of systems/devices such as mobile phones and tablets by Lava. The judge further said that based on the sales made by Lava for the subsequent period beginning January 1, 2025, Lava shall continue to deposit amounts in terms of the aforesaid rates or furnish a bank guarantee before the Registrar General of this court as directed on a half-yearly basis. However, the court clarified that this order does not confer any final finding on infringement or liability, nor does it mandate acceptance of the plaintiffs' licensing rate as binding. The scope of the pro tem order is limited to ensuring that during the pendency of the suit, the SEP holder is not left without any security, while the implementer retains full opportunity to contest all substantive issues, the order stated. The court noted that Dolby's patents had been within the knowledge of Lava at least since December 31, 2018, when they were first asserted by Dolby.During that period, Lava kept on implementing suit patents. Even after the filing of the present suit, a License Agreement could not be negotiated between the parties, it said, noting that Lava's conduct during negotiations had been that of an 'unwilling licensee'."The financial condition of Lava is such that it is necessary to direct Lava to make a pro tem deposit," Justice Bansal said.In December 2018, Dolby International had offered Lava the option of entering into a global fair, reasonable, non-discriminatory licensing agreement (FRAND) for the patents and negotiated continuously with the Indian company to obtain a bilateral license, or to obtain a pool license from its agent Via LA.However, Dolby claimed that Lava throughout the negotiations engaged in dilatory tactics and never even came up with a counter-offer.As Lava refused to enter into the required license, or even negotiate in good faith with Dolby, and continued selling infringing devices without paying any royalties, Lava obtained an unfair price advantage over the compliant licensees of Dolby who are market competitors of the Indian company, Dolby had argued. Consequently, Dolby International moved the high court seeking a permanent injunction against Lava International from using its patents.Lava on the other hand contended five of the eight patents held by Dolby International had expired prior to institution of the suit, thus the latter cannot charge royalty and claim injunction for their use. The claim charts presented by Dolby International lack clarity and fail to conclusively demonstrate essentiality, it further told the court. Thus, there was no reasonable basis to believe or presume that the patents held by Dolby International qualified as standard essential patents, Lava said.

Indian investors hold steady in US markets amid 'chaos' in Q2 2025: Report

Indian investments in US equity markets in the second quarter of 2025 (Q2 2025) held steady amid the 'chaos' of trade-tariff shocks, volatility and geopolitical uncertainty, said a report by financial technology platform Vested on Tuesday. The company enables investors, primarily those in India, to access the US stock market. Its assets under management (AUM) grew 140 per cent to Rs 5,500 crore in Q2 2025 from Rs 2,200 crore the previous year. Average portfolio size crossed Rs 7 lakh. 'Amid this chaos, Indian investors on Vested didn't just hold steady, they doubled down,' said the financial technology company's Q2 2025 Global Investing Report. Buy volumes rose 20.47 per cent quarter-on-quarter (Q-o-Q), 'reflecting growing confidence in global investing'. According to Vested, Indian investors displayed 'remarkable resilience during the turbulence of Q2 2025'. Alphabet, the parent company of Google, emerged as a favourite, with a 113 per cent surge in investors on the platform. Duolingo (language learning platform)'s stock saw its investor base skyrocket by 2,255 per cent on Vested, highlighting a move beyond just the traditional FAANG stocks, the five major US technology companies: Facebook (Meta), Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Google. Smarter, calmer, more global Instead of retreating during April's tariff-driven selloff, many investors trimmed their positions in volatile names such as Tesla and Nvidia, only to re-enter later as markets stabilised. The report notes growing interest in healthcare majors like UnitedHealth and Novo Nordisk, alongside niche innovation plays such as CRISPR Therapeutics and IONQ Inc. Diversification is also spreading geographically. With the US dollar down 7 per cent Q-o-Q and divergent central bank policies, Indian investors increased allocations to Europe (VGK), China (FXI, CWEB), and Brazil (EWZ). ETFs preferred Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have become the preferred vehicle for global diversification: -QQQM investor count jumped 131 per cent Q-o-Q. -SOXX (semiconductors) grew 101 per cent. -IWM (small-cap ETF) investor base soared 622 per cent. Healthcare-focused XLV saw a staggering 1,087 per cent increase in unique investors, fuelled by interest in GLP-1 drug makers and AI-led diagnostics. Even dividend-focused SCHD, short-term bond fund VUSB, and silver ETF SLV saw steady inflows. 'This quarter wasn't about momentum, it was about method,' said Vested's report. The 140 per cent annual rise in investing reflects a behavioural shift: Indian investors are diversifying portfolios and repositioning during volatility instead of retreating, it said.

Retail participation in mkts increase; demat accounts surge to 194 mn: Sebi

The Indian market is witnessing remarkable participation from retail investors, with a surge in demat accounts to 194 million in 2025 from 36 million in 2019, a senior Sebi official said on Tuesday. Meanwhile, domestic institutional ownership in listed companies has increased from 13 per cent to 20 per cent, while foreign ownership has declined from 22 per cent to 17 per cent. Speaking at an event organised by IVCA Renewable Energy Summit 2025, Ruchi Chojer, Executive Director at Sebi, said that trust is the cornerstone of investment, and India has earned that trust. "At Sebi, our regulatory approach has focused on balancing capital formation with systemic stability and investor protection. Trust is the cornerstone of investment, and India has earned that trust," she was quoted in a statement issued by IVCA. She shared that retail participation has surged from 36 million demat accounts in 2019 to 194 million in 2025. Highlighting the evolution of capital markets in the country, Chojer said that over the last three decades, India's capital markets have transformed into one of the world's top 10 equity ecosystems-- resilient, inclusive, and increasingly driven by domestic participation. In the last 10 years alone, Indian companies have raised nearly Rs 93 trillion through equity and debt, with FY 202425 witnessing a record Rs 4.3 trillion in equity issuance, including Rs 1.7 trillion via IPOs. "This growth is powered not just by policy and infrastructure, but by deepening investor trust," she said. Additionally, she spoke on the importance of capital markets in India's clean energy journey. "As India undertakes its green transition, the role of capital markets and particularly alternative investment funds (AIFs) will be critical. Financing long-gestation sectors like grid modernisation, storage, and transmission requires patient and risk-tolerant capital. Sebi has already enabled blended finance structures, allowing philanthropic and multilateral capital to invest through junior units in AIFs. This is a vital step in unlocking capital for the energy transition," she said. Also, she stressed that India's clean energy transition cannot be driven by listed companies alone and AIFs must play a key role in driving ESG adoption among unlisted investee companies, especially as 40 per cent of AIF capital comes from foreign investors who expect alignment with global disclosure standards. "We are open to proposals for ESG-labelled AIF categories, and we believe well-structured tax incentives can further catalyse investment into sectors with long-term impact and higher risk profiles," she said. Looking to the future, she noted, "India will need an estimated $250 billion by 2030 to finance renewable energy, storage, and transmission. Sebi remains committed to enabling this transformation by providing regulatory clarity, reducing policy risk, and supporting innovative investment structures. Our goal is to ensure that India's capital markets continue to serve not just as engines of growth, but also as platforms for building a sustainable, future-ready economy.

Chinese firms rush to buy Nvidia AI chips as sales set to resume

Chinese firms are scrambling to buy Nvidia's H20 artificial intelligence chips, two sources told Reuters, as the company said it planned to resume sales to the mainland days after its CEO met U.S. President Donald Trump. Nvidia's AI chips have been a key focus of U.S. export controls designed to keep the most advanced chips out of Chinese hands over national security concerns. The U.S.-listed company has said the curbs would cut its revenue by $15 billion. The world's most valuable firm is filing applications with the U.S. government to resume sales to China of the H20 graphics processing unit (GPU), and expects to get the licences soon, Nvidia said in a statement. 'The U.S. government has assured Nvidia that licences will be granted, and Nvidia hopes to start deliveries soon,' said the company, whose chief executive, Jensen Huang, is visiting Beijing and set to speak at an event on Wednesday. The White House, which has previously expressed concern that the Chinese military could use AI chips to develop weapons, did not respond to a request for comment. Chinese companies have scrambled to place orders for the chips, which Nvidia would then need to send to the U.S. government for approval, the sources familiar with the matter said. They added that internet giants ByteDance and Tencent are in the process of submitting applications. Central to the process is a 'whitelist' put together by Nvidia for Chinese companies to register for potential purchases, one of the sources said. ByteDance and Tencent did not respond to a request for comment. Nvidia did not respond to a request for comment regarding the 'whitelist'. Nvidia, which has criticised the export curbs the Trump administration imposed in April that stopped it from selling its H20 chip in China, also said it has introduced a new model tailored to meet regulatory rules in the Chinese market. Huang is set for a media briefing in Beijing on Wednesday when he attends a supply chain expo. The Nvidia CEO also visited China in April and stressed the importance of the Chinese market. 'The Chinese market is massive, dynamic, and highly innovative, and it's also home to many AI researchers,' Huang told Chinese state broadcaster CCTV on Tuesday. 'Therefore, it is indeed crucial for American companies to establish roots in the Chinese market.' Nvidia's shares jumped 5% in premarket trading. Rival AI chipmaker AMD, which has forecast a $1.5 billion revenue hit this year due to U.S. export curbs on China, rose more than 3%. 'This is a major catalyst for Nvidia shares, as many had written off the chance of any meaningful revenue coming from China,' said Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst, Hargreaves Lansdown. Asked at a regular foreign ministry briefing in Beijing about Nvidia's plans to resume AI chip sales, a spokesperson said, 'China is opposed to the politicisation, instrumentalisation and weaponisation of science, technology and economic and trade issues to maliciously blockade and suppress China.' Nvidia has faced increased competition from Chinese tech giant Huawei and other makers of GPUs – the chips used to train artificial intelligence. But Chinese companies, including big tech firms, still crave Nvidia chips for its computing platform known as CUDA. Huang's visit is being closely watched in both China and the United States, where a bipartisan pair of senators last week sent the CEO a letter asking him to abstain from meeting companies working with military or intelligence bodies. The senators also asked Huang to refrain from meeting with entities named on the United States' restricted export list. The move to resume sales of the H20 chips comes amid easing tensions between Washington and Beijing, with China relaxing controls on rare earth exports and the United States allowing chip design software services to restart in China. 'The uncertainties between the U.S. and China remain high and despite a pause in H20's ban, Chinese companies will continue to diversify their options to better protect their supply chain integrity,' said He Hui, research director of semiconductors at Omdia. The H20 chip was developed specifically for the Chinese market after U.S. export curbs imposed on national security grounds in late 2023. The AI chip was Nvidia's most powerful legally available product in China until it was effectively banned by Washington in April. The H20 ban forced Nvidia to write off $5.5 billion in inventories, and Huang told the Stratechery podcast that the company also had to walk away from $15 billion in sales. But now, the possibility of new licenses could represent about $15 billion to $20 billion in additional revenue this year, depending on when the approval is granted and how quick the deliveries can ramp back up, said Hargreaves' Britzman. 'There's also a chance Nvidia can reverse some, or all, of the $5.5 billion impairment charge taken in the first quarter, providing a double boost for earnings.' Nvidia also announced the development of a new AI chip designed specifically for China, called the RTX Pro GPU. The company described it as 'fully compliant' with U.S. export controls and suitable for digital twin AI applications in sectors, such as smart factories and logistics. In May, Reuters reported Nvidia was preparing to launch in China a new AI chip, based on the RTX Pro 6000D, at a significantly lower price point than the H20. The graphics processing unit would be part of Nvidia's latest generation Blackwell-architecture AI processors and was expected to be priced well below the H20 for its weaker specifications and simpler manufacturing requirements, sources said. China generated $17 billion in revenue for Nvidia in the fiscal year ending January 26, or 13% of total sales, based on its latest annual report. Huang has consistently highlighted China as a critical market for Nvidia's growth.
