A warmer welcome?
America has always been called a melting pot—a place where people from all over the world come to build a better life. But for the past few years, things have been really tough for immigrants, especially those who entered the U.S. without permission.
U.S. President Donald Trump made it one of his biggest promises to kick out millions of undocumented immigrants. In fact, he started his second term with a strict plan: 'Come legally or leave.' Some people agreed with him because there is a real problem—over 11 million people were living in the U.S. without proper papers by 2022, and some were even from India. In February, a big plane landed in Amritsar with 104 Indians who had been sent back from the U.S.
Even though deportations like these keep happening—about 14,700 every month—Trump's way is seen as especially harsh and loud, often involving handcuffs and shame. But now, something surprising is happening.
Many Americans are changing their minds.
New polls say most people don't want such harsh punishments anymore. A Gallup survey showed only 38% support mass deportation, down from 47% last year. And 78% of Americans now believe immigrants who've lived peacefully in the U.S. for years should be allowed to become citizens.
Why the change? Because people see that most immigrants help—they work hard, follow rules, and add value. A CNN poll showed 55% think Trump has gone too far, and 59% are against jailing people just for being in the U.S. without papers—especially if they've been living there for a long time without causing harm.
Even Trump's own political group, the Republicans, is showing a shift: only 48% want less immigration now, compared to 88% last year.
This change in attitude gives hope—especially to Indians who've built lives in the U.S. or students dreaming of studying there. If America listens to its people and softens its stance, it could once again be seen as the land of opportunity, not fear.

Gogoi's Parliament speech proves he acts on behalf of Pakistan: Himanta
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday (July 29, 2025) claimed that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi's speech in Parliament "proved beyond doubt that he acts on behalf of Pakistan". Mr. Sarma alleged that with Mr. Gogoi's wife and both kids having foreign citizenship, he can leave India any time. "Speech delivered by our MP from Jorhat in Parliament yesterday proved beyond doubt that he acts on behalf of Pakistan. His secret trip and close ties with the Pakistani establishment speak volumes," the CM posted on X. speech delivered by our MP from Jorhat in Parliament yesterday proved beyond doubt that he acts on behalf of Pakistan. His secret trip and close ties with the Pakistani establishment speak volumes. With his wife and both the kids holding foreign citizenship, he can leave India… — Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) July 29, 2025 "He is a disgrace to Assam and a betrayal of our pride as proud (sic) Indians," he added. Gogoi, during a debate on Operation Sindoor in Parliament on Monday, had criticised Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for allegedly failing to answer basic questions about the April 22 Pahalgam attack. He had also questioned the government's alleged silence over internal security lapses and the origin of the Pahalgam attack that claimed the lives of 26 people. The CM has been attacking Gogoi for months, alleging that his wife Elizabeth Colburn has a connection with Pakistan's spy agency ISI.

Intel Input, Technical Surveillance, Eye In The Sky: How Op Mahadev Eliminated Pahalgam Terrorists
CNN-News18 learned that on Saturday, a suspicious communication sent from a satellite phone, heightened suspicion that Suleiman Shah and his associates were hiding in Dachigam. Three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam terror attack – Suleiman alias Faizal Jat, Jibran, and Hamza Afghani – were neutralised in Dachigam forest in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday as part of Operation Mahadev, Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed to Parliament on Tuesday. Shah stated that the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report of the cartridges found in Pahalgam matched the M9 and two AK-47 rifles recovered in Dachigam. The rifles underwent forensic testing in Chandigarh to corroborate the Pahalgam evidence. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) also asked the arrested harbourers to identify the deceased terrorists. The identification was confirmed after NIA brought the previously arrested harbourers from Kot Lakhpat Jail to the encounter site for on-the-spot verification. How was this accomplished? On May 22, a specific intelligence input was received by the Intelligence Bureau (IB), as relayed by Home Minister Amit Shah to the Lok Sabha. This input was further refined using advanced technical surveillance and Operation Mahadev was launched. CNN-News18 learned that on Saturday, a suspicious communication sent from a satellite phone, which had been under surveillance since the Pahalgam incident, heightened suspicion that Suleiman Shah and his associates were hiding in Dachigam. Given the high altitude and dense forest cover, pinpointing the heavily armed terrorists was challenging. Officials stated that a quadcopter was deployed to pinpoint the terrorists' hiding location. Equipped with both human and technical intelligence, a joint operation involving army para commandos, CRPF, and Jammu and Kashmir police was launched. Sources confirmed that all three were Pakistani nationals and part of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror group. The mastermind, identified as Suleiman Shah, was killed during a surprise offensive launched by security forces after intercepting the technical signal, the satellite phone transmission, believed to have been used by the terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack. Officials said the other two slain terrorists were identified as Jibran, who was allegedly linked to last year's Sonamarg Tunnel attack, and Hamza Afghani. All three were neutralised in the joint operation, which was backed by sustained intelligence inputs over the past month. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Zelensky's Drones Plunge 150,000 Into Darkness, Strike Homes & Railways; Kills Civilian In Car Blast
'Publicity Stunt': US Calls UN Israeli-Palestinian Peace Talks 'Unproductive And Ill-Timed' The Trump administration has strongly criticised the current UN conference on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia. The State Department called the event 'unproductive and ill-timed,' accusing it of prolonging the war and emboldening Hamas. Officials described the conference as a publicity stunt undermining delicate diplomatic efforts to achieve peace and free hostages. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously called such efforts a 'slap in the face' to the victims of the October 7 attack. Although the US is not participating in the conference, it reaffirmed its commitment to peace initiatives in the region. The statement also condemned French President Emmanuel Macron's recognition of a Palestinian state, which was welcomed by both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. Criticism was notably absent for Saudi Arabia, reflecting the Trump administration's close ties with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. While avoiding an official position on the two-state solution, Trump officials have avoided criticising recent Israeli policies challenging that framework. The focus remains on promoting peace while opposing gestures thought to hinder diplomatic progress.#IsraelPalestine #UNConference #TwoStateSolution #TrumpAdministration #MiddleEastPeace #HamasConflict #DiplomaticEfforts #Macron #SaudiArabia #PeaceProcess 671 views | 3 hours ago
