Son of Briton arrested over ‘drowning' hit him with a car two years ago

Times3 days ago
The husband of a woman whose father-in-law allegedly tried to drown her was jailed for harassing her and hitting his father with a car, The Times can reveal.
Alex Gibbon, 34, pleaded guilty last year to assaulting his father, Mark, and harassing the mother of his two children, Jasmine Wyld, 33.
The Times understands he hit Mark while driving an £80,000 Porsche Cayenne in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, in May 2023.
Mark, 62, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on Sunday after he allegedly tried to drown his daughter-in-law, Wyld, in a row over his will.
Wyld, a hairdresser, was left with a scratch on her chest and fearing for her life after the alleged attack in a swimming pool at a luxury resort near Walt Disney World, Florida.
Mark, a lighting technician who has worked on music videos for musicians including Ed Sheeran, alleged that he and Wyld had been drinking when the row occurred. He has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and battery and will appear in court next month.
Mark was staying with his family at the luxury Solterra Resort in Davenport, near Walt Disney World, when he got into an argument over the 'stipulations of his will'.

It is claimed that during the disagreement, Mark repeatedly tried to push Wyld under the water. This allegedly prompted his nine-year-old granddaughter to jump into the pool and try to save her mother. Police officers at Polk county sheriff's office said Mark pushed her away.
The police said: 'She [Wyld] advised that she could not breathe and believed that she was going to drown. [She] advised that she had to fight Mark in order to get away from him and from under the water but he kept pushing her back under.'
Mark, from Beaconsfield, allegedly only stopped when two onlookers told him they had called the sheriff's office.
He was taken into custody at about 5.20pm last Sunday. It is said that he admitted pushing his daughter-in-law under the water but denied trying to drown her. He is said to have claimed they were drinking when they got into a row.
His son had previously worked with him at his film and television lighting firm Ultralight but resigned as director in April 2023. Mark has since renamed the company as MRG Lighting and he is listed as the sole director.

TOBY SHEPHEARD FOR THE TIMES
Alex pleaded guilty in February last year to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and harassment without violence.
He was sentenced at Aylesbury crown court to a total of 25 months' imprisonment, 36 months' disqualification from driving a five-year restraining order, and surcharge.
The court was told that he had been subject to a community order at the time of the offences.
Mark has worked on television and film sets as well as on music videos for performers such as Sam Smith and Paloma Faith.
Grady Judd, the Polk county sheriff, said: 'It's great that Polk county draws visitors from all across the world but we expect vacationers to behave while they visit with us, just as we expect our lifelong residents to do the same. Because Mr Gibbon couldn't control his anger, he may find himself spending a lot more time in Florida than he had anticipated.'

Incredible moment widow HUGS husband's hit & run killer & forgives him as he bursts into tears in court

THIS is the astonishing moment a woman embraces her husband's hit-and-run killer in court and tells him he is forgiven. Joseph Tillman, 24, was sentenced to 20 years behind bars after killing Charles Johnson in a hit-and-run. 6 6 6 Johnson was riding his bike on Towne Lake Parkway, Georgia at around 3:30pm on March 3 last year when he was fatally struck by a car. Charles - better known as Chuck - was rushed to hospital where he was treated for life-threatening injuries but tragically died a week later. Tillman later pleaded guilty to charges including homicide by vehicle, drinking under the influence, and reckless driving. Incredible footage taken in court shows the moment the 24-year-old breaks down in tears as the victim's wife, Regina Johnson, turns to embrace him. The two share a long hug, prompting tears among members of the courtroom, as Regina tell the young lad she forgives him. Tillman then whispered to Regina: "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry," WSB-TV 2 reports. Watching on in disbelief, Cherokee County Superior Court Judge Tony Baker said: "I don't think I've ever seen the wife of a victim hug a defendant where they killed somebody." In an interview after the trial, Regina revealed she reached for her husband's killer because "God told her he needed a mom hug". "Joey needs healing of things in his past, as we all do. And that is our heart and prayer," she said. The 24-year-old had been drinking at a sports bar and had bought whippets of Galaxy Gas - a dangerous nitrous oxide drug - before getting behind the wheel and passing out. After hitting Johnson, Tillman evaded the scene and another driver, who was also present at the time, was initially charged with the hit-and-run. Johnson has been sentenced to two decades in prison where will have to complete a two year inpatient rehab program, which could lead to suspended prison time. Speaking in court, Tillman said: 'I've committed to the long road of making amends. I've entered rehab, embraced sobriety, began the hard, humbling work of healing. I know I do not deserve peace when I've caused so much pain.' While his defense lawyer, Paul Ghanouni, added: 'He's changed his way of life and seems like he's on a trajectory to continue to move forward with his life in a positive way.' Tributes have since poured in for Chuck who had a "joy for life" and could always be seen with a wide smile on his face. One grieving resident said: "He always had a smile, a joy for life, and always a big heart. "I spent many hours with him and his family, always feeling welcome. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you." While another added: "So sorry for Chuck to have had been involved in such a tragic accident. Our sympathy to the family and may Chuck rest in peace." A third, who remembered Chuck for his generosity, said: "Chuck was a friend whose love of life, Jesus, family, theological discussions with me in various places in the world, and and gentle honesty has immeasurably enriched my life." The 78-year-old was a valued member of his community - serving in various ministries and helping in the local women's shelter. He was married to Regina for 50 years and leaves behind his two adored sons and daughter, and five cherished granddaughters. 6 6

Three men are stabbed next to church graveyard as male, 34, is arrested on suspicion of attempted murder

Three men have been stabbed next to a church graveyard as a man, 34, is arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The horrifying attack, thought to be caused by a knife, happened on the St Mary's Butts street in the town centre of Reading, Berkshire, at around 3.25am today. One male in his teens, one in his twenties and another in his thirties suffered serious injuries in the shocking incident near St Mary's Church. All of them were taken to hospital, where the man in his late teens has now been discharged, while the others remain. The arrested man, who is from Reading, remains in custody, with Thames Valley Police officers now appealing for information and witnesses. Pictures show a massive police cordon around the nearby busy thoroughfare of St Mary's Butts, near the Oracle shopping centre and several popular bars. Multiple police vans and cruisers were seen guarding the scene of the triple-stabbing horror, around which the town centre has essentially shut down. The area is a major transport route for buses and private vehicles - so the cordon caused heavy traffic disruption on an already hectic weekend afternoon. A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said a scene-watch is currently in place at the site of the brutal attack while investigations continue. Detective Inspector Sally Russell said: 'We know this attempted murder will cause concern but we are investigating it as a high priority, with one suspect currently in police custody. 'There is a large scene-watch in place in St Mary's Butts so people will see an increased police presence in the area while officers and staff carry out enquiries. 'I understand people may have concerns but you are welcome to discuss these with any of our uniformed officers. 'Anyone with information or footage should call 101 or make a report on our website, quoting reference number 43250406185. 'We believe there may have been numerous witnesses to the incident, including those with mobile phone footage of it and/or the aftermath. 'So please send any footage or photos to us instead of sharing on social media. 'Alternatively, provide information anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or via its website. 'Lastly, I understand the scene is causing some disruption in the town centre but please be patient while we investigate. 'We will reduce and remove the scene as soon as we are able to. We apologies for any inconvenience caused.'

Scorned teacher-wife blows the whistle on NYC principal's alleged affair with younger married educator: report

The enraged wife of a straying New York City elementary school principal blew the lid off her husband's alleged secret affair with a much younger teacher at his Staten Island school, according to a report. Principal Anthony Cosentino, 43, was allegedly caught in a 'consensual sexual relationship' with teacher Jacqueline Sinodinos, 28, according to The New York Post. The reported affair broke up two marriages, with both Cosentino's wife and Sinodino's husband filing for divorce, according to The Post. The scandal came to light when Cosentino's wife, who is also a New York City school teacher, filed a complaint with the city Department of Education claiming he had been having an 'illicit sexual relationship' with Sinodinos since June 2023. The scorned wife complained that her husband had been giving his alleged affair partner extra funds to spend on a Thanksgiving party and other celebrations for her students. The city had received another complaint regarding the pair in November 2023, and by July 2024, the Special Commissioner of Investigation, an independent watchdog for New York City schools, filed a report with the DOE, detailing the alleged misconduct at PS 21 in North Shore. Cosentino was removed from the school, but has remained on the city's payroll, making $187,632 a year, the outlet reported. While officials with the Special Commissioner of Investigation recommended disciplinary actions — including firing Cosentino — he may just be reassigned as principal of a new school, sources told The Post. Romantic relationships between coworkers are allowed among city school employees, as long as they don't involve a financial component and one of the parties isn't in a superior power position. Cosentino eventually admitted to the extramarital affair, but insisted he wasn't giving the teacher involved any special treatment. The independent watchdog group, however, found that he gave Sinodinos 'highly favorable' reviews and recommended her for tenure, granting her permanent teacher status with protections from firing. Cosentino only confessed after Sinodinos was tenured in January 2024. While another administrator who approved her tenure had 'suspicions of bias' by Cosentino, the watchdog group found no evidence to support that Sinodinos wasn't deserving of the tenure. The scandal broke out just as a separate investigation found that Cosentino was 'negligent' in supervising the school's purchasing secretary, Michele Cenci, who pleaded guilty to embezzling over $145,000 from the school over a seven-year period. Instead of firing Cosentino, the DOE reportedly plans to make him principal of PS 3, The Margaret Gioisa School in Elm Park, sources told The Post. However, New York City Department of Education spokeswoman Chyann Tull told the outlet that wasn't the case, and that Cosentino 'is not currently assigned to P.S. 3,' where a retiring principal will be replaced. 'We take all allegations of this kind seriously, and always follow established protocols to ensure the safety and well-being of our school communities,' Tull said.
