Fund managers boost exposure to bitcoin ETFs, quarterly US filings show

Zawya17-02-2025

Asset managers, ranging from wealth management companies to hedge funds and pension funds, boosted allocations to U.S. exchange-traded funds tied to the price of bitcoin in the fourth quarter of 2024, as the price of the world's largest cryptocurrency soared 47%, according to recent regulatory filings.
The State of Wisconsin Investment Board disclosed in its quarterly 13-F filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission that its bitcoin ETF holdings more than doubled in the final three months of last year, to 6 million shares of the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF by December 31. The fund, which was the first fund of its kind to report investing in crypto following the debut of bitcoin ETFs, couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
Other large investment funds also boosted their holdings in the ETFs, which launched in January 2024.
Tudor Investment Corp, a systematic hedge fund manager, reported its holdings of the iShares ETF -- now the largest of the pack, with more than $55 billion in assets -- climbed to 8 million shares, from 4.4 million shares. The value of those holdings also soared, reflecting bitcoin's jump in value, hitting $426.9 million, up from $159.9 million at the end of September. Tudor didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
An Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund, Mubadala Investment Co, reported its first foray into bitcoin ETFs in the fourth quarter, taking a 8.2 million share stake in the iShares ETF that was worth $436.9 million.
Hedge fund Hunting Hill Capital had no exposure to these ETFs as of the end of the third quarter, but by December 31 had re-emerged as a significant investor, with positions valued at about $131 million by the end of the year.
"We've been actively trading within the broader crypto ETF complex, and the timing of the third-quarter filing may not have aligned with when we bought and sold various ETFs," said Adam Guren, founder and chief investment officer of the firm.
The ranks of those adding to positions included financial advisory firms whose clients have been eager buyers of bitcoin ETFs. Cetera Advisors and NewEdge Advisers were among firms that boosted holdings in several of the ETFs, including products offered by Fidelity, ARK Investments and Invesco.
Other investors were more selective, the filings showed. Cresset Asset Management boosted its exposure to ETFs carrying lower fees, said Jack Ablin, the firm's chief investment officer.
"It's also possible right now to get attractive options pricing for collar strategies, allowing us to protect the downside while giving away less of the upside in exchange, on these bitcoin funds," Ablin said.
The 13F filings are one of the few ways to get insight into how institutional investors are positioned at the end of every quarter. The positions may not reflect current holdings.

Nigeria: SEC warns public against investing in Punisher Coin, $PUN

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued a warning to Nigerians against investing in the cryptocurrency known as Punisher Coin, or $PUN. This, the Commission said is due to its unauthorized presale and lack of regulatory approval. In a public notice, the SEC stated that the promoters or issuers of $PUN are not registered to operate in any capacity within the Nigerian capital market. The Commission stated that 'The attention of the Securities and Exchange Commission ('The Commission') has been drawn to several online publications blatantly advertising unauthorized presale of Cryptocoin termed 'PUNISHER COIN' aka '$PUN'. Particularly perturbing is the write-up by daily Trust E-Paper: 'Cryptos to Buy: Why Punisher Coin Could Join Avalanche and Chainlink as a Top Investment Pick'. 'The Commission hereby informs the public that neither 'PUNISHER COIN' aka'$PUN' nor its promoters have been vetted nor registered by the Commission to either promote, launch, sale, trade or solicit investments from the Nigerian public.' According to the Commission's preliminary investigations, Punisher Coin falls under the category of 'meme coins,' digital assets typically characterized by the absence of tangible utility or underlying projects. 'Further investigation has revealed that Punisher coin or $PUN is a Meme coin. Meme coins generally have no use case, intrinsic value or tangible projects backing them. Any attributed value to meme coin is usually linked to its promoters or the community effort which most often than not are susceptible to pump and dump schemes (a form of fraudulent activity that involves promoters spreading false or misleading information to create a buying frenzy that 'pumps' up the price of a 'coin' and then 'dumps' the coin by selling their own coins at the inflated price. Once the promoters dump their coins and stop hyping the coin, the coin price typically falls and investors lose money).' The SEC stated. The commission highlighted that the value of such coins is often driven by hype and social media buzz, making them vulnerable to market manipulation through schemes commonly known as pump, and the SEC explained that these schemes involve promoters inflating the price of the coin through misleading claims, only to sell their holdings at the peak, leaving other investors exposed to significant losses when the hype fades. SEC, therefore, strongly warned the public to be wary about investing in the purported presale of punisher coin ($PUN) as any person who invest in such a scheme, does so at his/her own risk. 'The Commission similarly reminds investing public of the need to always VERIFY the authenticity of crypto/virtual or digital assets, the registration status of its promoters and trading platform via the Commission's dedicated portal before indulging in any form of virtual or digital assets investment,' the Commission added.

Institutional Bitcoin ETF Holdings Slide Amid Market Rebalancing

Institutional holdings in U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds declined by 23% in the first quarter of 2025, falling from $27.4 billion to $21.2 billion. This marks the first quarterly decrease since the launch of these investment vehicles in January 2024. The downturn is largely attributed to an 11% drop in Bitcoin's price during the quarter, which significantly impacted the value of holdings. However, strategic repositioning by institutional investors also played a role, with some actively reducing their exposure to Bitcoin ETFs. Analysis of Securities and Exchange Commission 13F filings indicates a shift in the composition of institutional investors. Financial advisors increased their share of Bitcoin ETF holdings, rising from 47% to 50%, while hedge funds reduced their stake from 41% to 32%. This suggests a move towards longer-term investment strategies by advisors, contrasted with profit-taking by hedge funds. ADVERTISEMENT The unwinding of the basis trade—a strategy exploiting price differences between Bitcoin futures and spot markets—contributed to the reduction in hedge fund positions. As futures premiums compressed, the profitability of this arbitrage diminished, prompting firms like Millennium Management and Brevan Howard to adjust their holdings accordingly. Despite the overall decline, corporate treasuries continued to accumulate Bitcoin. Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, led public firms in Bitcoin acquisition during the quarter, adding 81,785 BTC valued at over $8 billion. This brought the company's total holdings to 553,555 BTC, underscoring a trend of corporations viewing Bitcoin as a strategic reserve asset.

BlackRock's Bitcoin ETF Achieves Historic Growth Milestone

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF has surged into the ranks of the world's 25 largest exchange-traded funds , reaching $72.4 billion in assets under management just 1.4 years after its launch. This rapid ascent positions IBIT as the youngest ETF among the top 25 by a significant margin, with the next youngest fund being over 12 years old. Launched on January 5, 2024, IBIT has demonstrated unprecedented growth in the ETF landscape. Its swift accumulation of assets reflects a strong institutional appetite for regulated exposure to Bitcoin, coupled with investor confidence in BlackRock's management capabilities. The fund's impressive performance is further highlighted by its consistent inflows. IBIT recorded net inflows on 29 of the past 30 trading days, including a 32-day streak without any outflows. Notably, on April 28, the ETF experienced its highest single-day inflow of the year at $970.93 million, even as Bitcoin's price saw only a modest increase of 1.36%, closing at $95,000. This trend underscores the strong institutional demand for Bitcoin exposure through regulated investment vehicles. ADVERTISEMENT IBIT's rapid growth has also positioned it as the second-largest holder of Bitcoin globally, with holdings amounting to approximately 660,842 BTC. This places it just behind the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, in terms of holdings. The ETF's success is attributed to its low fees and the trust investors place in BlackRock's institutional framework. The fund's benchmark, the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate – New York Variant, provides a reliable and regulated pricing mechanism, further enhancing investor confidence. IBIT trades on the NASDAQ exchange, offering investors a familiar and accessible platform for Bitcoin exposure. BlackRock's foray into the cryptocurrency space with IBIT marks a significant shift in the financial industry's approach to digital assets. The ETF's success may pave the way for broader acceptance and integration of cryptocurrencies into mainstream investment portfolios.
