Jaxson Dart impressing in the preseason has not changed the Giants' plan at quarterback
'Serious?' Dart asked, before making a throw that turned into a 30-yard gain and jogging back to the sideline, with Russell Wilson returning. It was all about putting the rookie quarterback in a situation he could face sooner or later in the NFL.
'You don't know what's going to happen,' Daboll said. 'Just be ready to go when your number's called.'
Dart passed that test and has made a strong first impression as a pro since the Giants traded back into the first round to draft him as their potential QB of the future. Completing 13 consecutive passes and 14 of 16 total on Saturday night against the Jets should give the organization and its fans plenty of optimism about what is to come, but it has not changed the plan for Wilson to start and Dart to wait in the wings.
'Russ is our starter, and we're going to keep developing Jaxson,' Daboll said. 'We have a plan. ... We just have to keep working with him and understand there's going to be a lot of downs. I know there's some ups right now, but there's going to be a lot of downs and we just got to keep growing and communicating, just keep getting better.'
Daboll, who is going into his fourth season coaching the Giants after getting the gig in part because of his work in Buffalo to develop Josh Allen on the path to becoming league MVP, insists there's a roadmap being followed. He is not exactly forthright about what it looks like.
In exhibition game No. 2, it included not just one snap but an entire drive for Dart with the first-team offense. Why? 'Because that was part of the plan,' Daboll deadpanned.
Whatever the plan is, and whenever Dart gets his first NFL start, the 22-year-old Mississippi product seems to be on board.
'They've done it with so many other quarterbacks. I trust them in the process,' Dart said. 'I have great guys around me, great coaches who have won and done it at the highest level, so I just look forward to learning each and every day.'
Wilson echoed the other side, saying he's willing to keep teaching Dart what he has stockpiled from playing more than a decade in the league, including winning the Super Bowl at what is now their home stadium in the Meadowlands.
'I'm never shy about giving information and talking about it,' Wilson, now 36, said after his own impressive preseason game that included an 80-yard pass play to undrafted free agent Beaux Collins. 'I think (Dart has) done a tremendous job. He definitely has worked at it every day. He works at it every day, and he asks the right questions. That's what I enjoy about him.'
Daboll appears to enjoy working with Dart, clearly along with general manager Joe Schoen and college scouts seeing enough that they liked to give up assets to use the 25th pick on the 6-foot-2 righty signal-caller. His stance continues to be that the Giants are trying to 'help Jaxson be the best quarterback he can be,' without many details on what that entails.
Part of it is tempering expectations. Barring injury, Wilson will lead New York's offense onto the field for the season opener Sept. 7 at Washington and keep that role for some time. The Giants are trying to exercise patience with Dart and play the long game.
'We spent a lot of time with him, have a lot of confidence in the young man,' Daboll said. 'He's done a good job for us since he's been here in every area you could do — off the field, on the field, leadership, moxie, intelligence — but it's early. We've played a couple preseason games against probably some vanilla looks but he's making strides every day and that's all you can ask of any other young player.'

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams appears to be more and more comfortable with his new head coach Ben Johnson by the day. Coming into this season after an offseason filled with upgrades to the coaching staff and roster, specifically the offensive line, Williams has to pay off the investment the organization has made into him during this year. Williams looked quite impressive in the short showing, completing 6-of-10 passes for 107 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions or sacks. Speaking to the media after the game, Williams jokingly complimented his head coach for being "calmer" during the game in comparison to how he is at practice. 'He's a lot more calmer on game day in the mic than he is in practice with me," Williams said. "It's great. It's exciting to be sitting there, having the headpiece in my ear right after I had however many plays I had, being able to listen to him encourage the guys. I think there was a moment where we were going for it on fourth down or something like that and something happened the play before where we got the call back and we ended up lining up. He was like, 'We're going to go get this right here.' "It's just small notes like that, that are encouraging in the moment. It's something that I don't know if he knows and he's conscious of it, but it's important to us QBs when we're out there having those small notes. He's a lot calmer on game days in the mic and that's a small note.' There was no secret that Johnson was going to come in and apply pressure to Williams quickly in order to have the young quarterback understand his offense in their first year together. The quicker that Williams can pick up the offense, the quicker the team can erase the memory of their 5-12 season last year and put more wins on the board this year while their quarterback grows and develops to the next level. High school sports participation rises nationally thanks to assist from girls flag football
The addition of girls flag football is helping fuel rising participation in high school sports nationally, with a record 8,260,891 boys and girls having participated in the last school year, according to the annual survey from the National Federation of State High School Assns. released on Monday. There were 68,847 girls playing flag football, a 60% increase from the previous year. Girls sports led the increases, including wrestling rising 15%. Football remains the most popular boys sports at 1,001,039. Track and field tops girls sports at 513,808. Girls flag football has been rising in popularity in Southern California. Joe Flacco was obvious QB1 pick, but plenty still needs to be settled in Browns' QB room
There were attempts to manufacture some drama over the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback decision, but it was the exact outcome we've all known for months. Joe Flacco is the starter. No surprise at all. Thankfully, there's still plenty of actual drama to be sorted out in the Browns' quarterback room. Flacco will start in Week 1 but one look at an absolutely brutal six-game stretch to start the season indicates that it might not be a long-term solution. Cleveland is very likely to use more than one quarterback this season. But due to injuries and an odd four-man derby at quarterback, which was created when the team made the unconventional decision to draft two quarterbacks in the middle rounds, it's uncertain what the order will be behind Flacco. And there's just one more preseason game to go. Joe Flacco expected to play Saturday The Browns have indicated they plan to play Flacco some in the preseason finale. Stefanski wants to use this week to simulate a regular-season week, and to do that he wanted his quarterback in place. Not that anyone paying attention thought it would be anyone but Flacco. So Flacco will play some, but presumably not too much. That means there will be some evaluation time for Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, though that's complicated too. Pickett hasn't played yet in the preseason due to a hamstring injury, but he did practice last week and presumably will be ready to play by Saturday. Sanders' status is unknown after he suffered an oblique injury in warmups before a joint practice last Wednesday. Gabriel, who missed the first preseason game, got the start with Sanders sitting last week. So Flacco hasn't played yet because he was the veteran starter who didn't need preseason reps in the first two games, Pickett hasn't played at all due to injury, Gabriel missed one game and Sanders missed one game. That makes the final decisions on the depth chart a little more challenging. Who will be Browns' backup? From all accounts, the depth chart at Browns camp has been fairly static. Flacco has been treated as the starter. Pickett has missed a lot of camp but there's no indication he's not second in line. Gabriel has been third and, even after a very good showing in Cleveland's first preseason game, Sanders has been fourth. That doesn't mean that is Stefanski's final answer on the depth chart. Gabriel played well last week aside from one pick-6, showing a good understanding of the offense and delivering passes accurately. Sanders' talent level was well above his status as a fifth-round pick, and he showed it in his one preseason game. The Browns will first need to decide how many quarterbacks to keep. It's very rare for a team to keep four, but it's an unusual situation. It doesn't seem likely a team would trade for Pickett, Flacco is already named the starter and trading Gabriel or Sanders a few months after trading them seems unlikely. Then, if the Browns do keep four, Stefanski has to order them. If Flacco gets benched, that's when the order will matter. And if Pickett is up next, the order between Gabriel and Sanders will matter if he gets benched later in the season. Perhaps some of that gets settled in Saturday's preseason finale. We know Flacco will be the Browns' starter to begin the season. The rest still seems unsettled.
