Premier League: Nottingham Forest 3 Brentford 1 Keith Andrews endured a difficult start to life as Brentford manager after watching his team comfortably beaten by Nottingham Forest. Taking charge of a competitive fixture for the first time since being unveiled as Thomas Frank's successor, the former Republic of Ireland international looked on in horror as Nuno Espirito Santo's side exposed the visitors' defensive vulnerabilities in ruthless fashion. Two first-half goals from Chris Wood, which bookended one from Forest's £36m summer signing Dan Ndoye, effectively put the game beyond Brentford's reach before the interval. Igor Thiago's late penalty proved nothing more than a consolation, with Nuno still feeling relaxed enough to substitute most of his most influential performers during the closing stages. Despite Andrews' lack of experience - he has never led a Premier League team before - Brentford owner Matthew Benham's belief in the 44-year-old's talents is clearly strong. But it will have been shaken by the sight of fellow debutant Caoimhin Kelleher being forced to pick the ball out of his net three times before the break, with some woeful defending responsible for all of those efforts. Wood's fifth minute finish marked the start of the deluge, as the New Zealander outmuscled three markers to meet Elliot Anderson's corner before sweeping home. He pounced again just before the break, escaping the clutches of Brentford's rearguard after again combining with Anderson. Moments earlier, following another sustained period of heavy Forest pressure, Ndoye had slipped away from Rico Henry to head home Morgan Gibbs-White's delightful assist. After paying a club record fee to acquire Bournemouth's Dango Quattara on the eve of this fixture, Andrews should not want for attacking talent when the African becomes available for selection ahead of Brentford's next game. But, even with his reign at the embryonic stage, his squad's lack of authority at the back will be a real cause for concern. Quattara's presence should add some much-needed penetration, with Yehor Yarmoliuk spurning Brentford's only clear-cut opportunity before they rallied a little during the closing stages. Jordan Henderson's introduction midway through the second period injected a little more authority into their work. His entrance coincided with the awarding of a penalty to Brentford during the closing stages. Thiago, a peripheral figure until that point, duly converted after Ibrahim Sangara had been punished for handball. Andrews will leave the east Midlands with plenty of food for thought following this ineffective display, which admittedly must be measured against the loss of Bryan Mbuemo and absence of Yoane Wissa as uncertainty continues to shroud his future at Brentford.

Evan Ferguson's new boss closes in on stat held by a former Ireland manager
Gian Piero Gasperini will hit a major milestone next week when he takes charge of Roma for the first time in their season opener against Bologna. For the former Atalanta manager, who green-lit the swoop for Ireland striker Evan Ferguson this summer, it will be his 600th game in charge in Serie A - a figure that only four men have previously hit. One of those is former Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni, who can boast a massive 689 games as a manager in the Italian top-flight. Trapattoni took charge of Milan, Juventus, Inter Milan, Cagliari and Fiorentina during a career that also saw him manage in Germany with Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart, Portugal with Benfica, and Austria with Red Bull Salzburg. It was during his time in Salzburg that he was approached by the FAI to manage Ireland, a role that he held from 2008 to 2013, and included qualification to Euro 2012. Gasperini's career in the dugout began in the underage ranks at Juventus. His first senior role came in 2003 with Crotone in Serie C1. He moved to Serie A in 2006 when he was appointed Genoa boss, and he went on to manage Inter Milan, Palermo, Genoa again, Atalanta and now Roma. At Atalanta he won the 2023/24 Europa League in Dublin, beating Bayer Leverkusen. Other managers to pass the 600-mark are Carlo Mazzone (792), Nereo Rocco (747) and Nils Liedholm (635). Gasperini gave Ferguson, a loan signing from Brighton, another pre-season run-out on Saturday in Roma's 2-2 draw with Saudi side Neom. Ferguson played the first-half before being replaced at the break by Artem Dovbyk. His managerial style is widely expected to bring the best out of the Irish youngster, as he favours a pressing game and has already spoken positively about Ferguson's abilities in that regard. And recently, former Ireland striker Clinton Morrison gave his verdict on the influence Gasperini could have on the 20-year-old. 'It's geared up for him. Gasperini is a top manager,' said Morrison. 'Look at what he did at Atalanta. Just look at (Ademola) Lookman, Gasparini took his game to another level. Now every big club wants Lookman. 'Roma have gained a fantastic manager, and Atalanta have lost one. Ferguson will come on leaps and bounds under him. 'When you have a manager making those kinds of quotes about you as a striker - which I was - it gives you confidence. Just five weeks after being crowned kings of the world, their bid to be serious contenders for the Premier League title took an early knock. Winning a glorified invitational event in mid-summer is one thing. Taking three points from a competitive game against most teams in the English top flight is quite another. Boss Enzo Maresca warned as much before the game, reminding everyone that Crystal Palace had beaten Manchester City and champions Liverpool in two showpiece occasions. Neither side did enough to deserve to win, creating few chances between them. After the disappointment of the Club World Cup banners, genuine joy almost arrived inside three minutes when Marc Cucurella headed a corner goalwards, but Palace's Ismaila Sarr nodded the ball off the line. Meanwhile the away fans were in no mood to celebrate their own recent success, in the FA Cup and Community Shield. And no wonder. Although cup final matchwinner Eze and captain Marc Guehi both started the game, both may be gone before the transfer window closes. What is certain is that the Europa League place they played such a big part in earning, has already been taken off them. The Palace supporters soon launched into a loud, foul-mouthed chant cursing Uefa, former owner John Textor, whose involved with French club Lyon caused the issue, and Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, whose complaint led to his club being promoted from the Conference League at Palace's expense. Within 13 minutes, the travelling support could add VAR to the list of those conspiring against them. Eze thought he had given his team the lead with a thumping free kick. But VAR Hames Bell advised referee England to take a look at the monitor. Most neutrals will feel it was a clever, legitimate goal. Or no less legitimate than the set-piece routines that involved blatant blocking of opponents, with zero intention to play the ball. But Guehi's shoulder-barge on Caicedo led to the goal being ruled out. Palace were encouraged, though, and a fine move ended with Jean-Philippe Mateta drawing a save from Robert Sanchez. Maresca had complained pre-match about the club's reluctance to buy him a new ball-playing centre back and said Tosin Adarabioyo was the only fit central defender capable of playing the Colwill role. Tosin was then injured in Saturday training, so rookie defender Josh Acheampong made only his third Premier League start. Moments later Mateta should have been sent off. His foul on Caicedo was spiteful and fully deserving of a second yellow card.
