30 camera traps installed in Bonai forest division to capture ‘tiger' presence
1 2 Rourkela: Following reports of a possible tiger's presence in Sundargarh, wildlife officials have strategically installed 30 camera traps at Jarda and Sole forest ranges in the district's Bonai forest division. "Given the animal's movement pattern, we anticipate its entry into the adjacent Bonai forest division in the district," Lalit Kumar Patra, divisional forest officer of Bonai forest division, said on Wednesday. Last week, pugmarks were spotted near Ujalpur forest range in Sundargarh forest division, prompting wildlife officials to initiate a thorough investigation, suspecting the presence of a tiger in the vicinity. Earlier, Chhattisgarh forest department had alerted its counterparts in Odisha about a suspected tiger's presence at Lephripada in Sundargarh forest division, which had possibly come from Gomarda wildlife sanctuary in Raigarh. It was speculated that the tiger might have moved to Athkosia reserve forest in Ujalpur forest range. In response, the wildlife wing issued an advisory to the Sundargarh forest division, urging the installation of camera traps at various locations to monitor the suspected big cat. Camera traps were subsequently set up in Lephripada range and Athkosia reserve forest, with an alert issued to locals. Residents were advised to avoid entering the forest and refrain from leaving their cattle and goats unattended. Forest officials have intensified patrolling efforts in Lephripada and Ujalpur forest ranges. The tiger's presence was further suspected when pugmarks were spotted in Sadar forest range on Aug 15, following an attack on a cow. Despite the installation of camera traps and increased patrolling by forest officials in Sadar and Bamra forest divisions, the animal could not be captured on camera. Reports suggest that the animal then moved to Bagdih forest range in Jharsuguda forest division. The suspected tiger reportedly travelled 150km in five days, reaching the Kholbilung section under Bamra forest division in Sambalpur district. Pugmarks near a pond in Kholbilung village confirmed the presence of a Royal Bengal tiger. Though camera traps were installed in strategic locations, the tiger is yet to be captured on film. HC seeks record of charges framed against Cong MLA Sanjay Awasthi
Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh high court has directed advocate general Anup Rattan to place on record the photocopies of the relevant documents of the case in which the special judge Solan has framed charges against Congress MLA from Arki, Sanjay Awasthi, and cricketer Vikramjeet Malik . The directions came from the division bench comprising Chief Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawali and Justice Ranjan Sharma during the resumed hearing of a suo moto case pertaining to the pending criminal cases against the MPs and MLAs in the state, on Tuesday. The advocate general informed the court that the special judge Solan had framed charges against Awasthi and Malik on April 21, 2022. MLA Awasthi is facing charges of wrongly authenticating the veracity of cricketer Malik's claim of being a resident of Solan to register himself with the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) and to play with the Himachal Ranji team. Awasthi, who is himself a cricketer, was then president of the Solan District Cricket Association and also served as a municipal councillor in Solan from 2000 to 2005. Malik, born in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, played in the Himachal Ranji team as a bowler and was later part of the Kings XI Punjab IPL team from 2009 to 2011. He then shifted to Rajasthan Royals in 2013, and later Royal Challengers Bangalore picked him in the 2016 auction. The state vigilance and anti-corruption bureau had registered a case of cheating, forgery, and false documentation against various cricketers from other states for obtaining Himachal domicile certificates on false documents. The vigilance had filed the first chargesheet in the court in June 2013 against cricketer Kuldeep Diwan, who claimed to be a resident of Kullu. Malik and another Delhi-based cricketer, Sobers Joban, are co-accused in the case. The high court has posted the matter for the next hearing on Sept 8.
