CBI Director Praveen Sood Gets One Year's Extension

The Centre on Wednesday extended the tenure of CBI Director Praveen Sood by one year.
Mr Sood took over as the CBI director on May 25, 2023 for a two-year term.
The decision to extend his tenure was taken in a meeting of the selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday, officials said.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), based on the recommendations of the selection committee, approved Sood's extension for a period of one year beyond May 24.
Mr Sood is a 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Karnataka cadre. He was working as Karnataka's director general of police (DGP) when he was named as the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Born in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district in 1964, Mr Sood joined the IPS at the age of 22 years after completing his civil engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
He also holds a post-graduation degree from the Indian Institute of Management, Bengaluru and the Maxwell School of Governance, Syracuse University in New York.
Mr Sood, known for his hands-on approach, had supervised investigation of high profile cases involving high net-worth individuals and matters having inter-state and international ramifications.
The tech-savvy officer had worked for the strengthening of the CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems) and the ICJS (Interoperable Criminal Justice System) in Karnataka along with the judiciary.

The Centre debunked claims that the ₹500 currency note will be discontinued by next year, trying to calm the panic among the people caused by the claim. The panic over the future of currency notes began recently when a video on YouTube went viral over the past few days, claiming that the ₹500 notes will be phased out starting March 2026. The 12-minute-long video, uploaded on a channel named Capital TV and gaining more than five lakh views since June 2, triggered confusion and panic among people. The union government responded to the claims through the Press Information Bureau (PIB) fact-check unit, saying the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has not made any such announcement. The Indian government's official fact-checking agency also advised people not to fall victim to any kind of misinformation and always verify any claims made. " ₹500 notes have NOT been discontinued and remain legal tender. Always verify news from official sources before believing or sharing it," PIB's post on social media platform X reads. The ₹500 notes currently in circulation were introduced after the government announced demonetisation of the old ₹500 and ₹1000 notes in November 2016. The current note is 66mm x 150mm and comes in stone grey colour. The back of it has a picture of the Red Fort, complying with the theme of Indian heritage sites. The current ₹500 notes continue to have their amount written in 17 languages, like all the other notes in circulation. These languages include English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had demonetised the previous ₹500 notes, along with the ₹1000 notes, in a televised address on November 8, 2016. The government had billed it as a measure to fight corruption in the country and address the issue of counterfeit banknotes. The news notes came into circulation a couple of days later. The RBI had also introduced the new ₹2,000 currency note during the demonetisation exercise. However, those notes were withdrawn from circulation in May 2023. Despite being withdrawn, the ₹2000 notes remain legal tender.

Union power ministry to act on Haryana's solar house proposal
Union power minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Friday lauded Haryana's proposal to build solar houses in villages and assured that the power ministry will move forward with the idea, a government spokesperson said. The suggestion was put forth by Haryana energy minister Anil Vij during the regional power ministers' conference (Northern Region), attended by representatives from eight states and UTs. Vij said the state is committed to promoting solar energy and aims to make Haryana self-reliant in electricity. A pilot project to set up solar houses is already underway, and if successful, it will be expanded across rural areas to ensure uninterrupted daytime power for farmers. Vij said the state government is making continuous efforts to promote solar energy so that Haryana becomes self-sufficient in electricity. He said department of new and renewable energy will construct solar houses in villages to ensure daytime electricity supply to farmers, enabling them to irrigate their fields and meet their power needs without depending on other sources. He also proposed a policy to regulate infrastructure such as poles and transmission lines over agricultural fields and residential areas. Vij recommended underground cabling in congested zones and called for a technical feasibility study to establish safety standards. Stressing the threat of cyber-attacks, Vij urged the Centre to frame a national cyber security policy for the power sector. Additional chief secretary of Haryana's energy department, AK Singh said that during the May 2025 conflict with Pakistan, web portals of UHBVN and DHBVN companies were targeted by hackers.

SC stays trial against former Haryana IAS officer in Manesar land case
The Supreme Court has stayed trial proceedings against former Haryana IAS officer Rajeev Arora in the Manesar land deal, investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The former IAS officer had petitioned the apex court after his revision petition challenging his summoning by a special CBI court was dismissed by the Punjab and Haryana high court on May 15. A special CBI court had on December 1, 2020 ordered that the former IAS officer be summoned to face trial for committing offence under section 120-B read with 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the Manesar land matter. However, on a revision petition filed by Arora, the Punjab and Haryana high court on December 14, 2020 had stayed the operation and implementation of the order of the special CBI court. Rejecting the challenge to the special CBI court's December 1, 2020 order, the HC on May15 said it found no illegality or infirmity in the order passed by learned special CBI court in summoning the petitioners. An apex court bench headed by chief justice BR Gavai, however, on May 29 ordered that notice be issued to the respondents and 'proceedings qua the petitioner (Rajeev Arora) shall stand stayed till the next date of hearing.' During the trial court proceedings on Friday, Special CBI judge, Rajeev Goyal while referring to the apex court's order of May 29 ordered that proceedings against all the accused persons except Rajeev Arora shall commence. The special court in its June 6 order noted that it is, therefore, seen that all the accused except accused Dhare Singh, Kulwant Singh Lamba, DR Dhingra and Rajeev Arora, have been ordered to be charge-sheeted qua the offences as detailed in the order December 1, 2020. The court said that now arguments need to be advanced on charges in respect of accused Dhare Singh, Kulwant Singh Lamba and DR Dhingra. Learned defence counsels seek time to prepare the arguments. Learned senior public prosecutor Harsh Mohan Singh submits that charge-sheet may kindly be framed against the accused persons who have already been ordered to be charge-sheeted vide order dated December 1,2020. 'I am not able to accept the submission made by the senior public prosecutor as it will not be appropriate to frame charge-sheet before considering the case concerning framing of charges in respect of accused Dhare Singh, Kulwant Singh Lamba and DR Dhingra. In case, the court after hearing contentions of the said accused persons and senior public prosecutor for CBI, concludes that charges are required to be framed against said accused persons as well, then a consolidated charge-sheet qua all the accused persons shall be framed and in my opinion, it will be more appropriate if such a course is adopted, for framing charge-sheet in a piecemeal manner is not desirable. As such, to come up on July 10, 2025 for arguments on charge qua accused Dhare Singh, Kulwant Singh Lamba and DR Dhingra,'' ordered the special court.
