Karnataka CM to lay foundation stone for Bannimantap bus terminal on July 19

The foundation stone for the new bus terminal at Bannimantap in Mysuru, proposed at a cost of ₹120 crore, will be laid by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on July 19, even as activists have flagged the location as being unsuitable. The new bus terminal will come up on Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation's (KSRTC) own land, and entails construction of basement parking to handle 5,000 two-wheelers and about 200 to 300 four-wheelers, said Srinivasan, Divisional Controller of KSRTC. He said that once completed, the KSRTC will shift about 1,200 departures to the new terminal at Bannimantap and take away 50% of the traffic load from the existing suburban bus stand. 'All services to Bengaluru, long-distance intra-State and inter-State departures and arrivals will shift to the new terminal, while the existing suburban stand will handle services to Mysuru rural and surrounding areas,' he added. The KSRTC was also planning to route the entry and exit of all buses from the Bannimantap industrial area in order to avoid the Nelson Mandela Road to eliminate traffic congestion within the city. Mr. Srinivas said that the existing suburban bus stand had exceeded its carrying capacity by manifold, and the vehicle density was immense making it imperative to opt for a new bus stand and reduce the congestion in the heart of the city. When pointed to the opposition to KSRTC's plans and suggestions that the new bus terminal should be located beyond the Outer Ring Road, the official said that KSRTC did not have any land on the city outskirts and neither did it have the capacity to purchase land for a green field terminal. 'Government acquisition of land, handing it over to the KSRTC, etc. is a long-term process while the imperatives of traffic reduction at the suburban stand was immediate,' said the Divisional Controller. While the carrying capacity of the suburban bus stand was 1,500 services, it had increased to over 2,600 services over the years, and reached nearly 3,000 to 3,200 services during long-weekends interspersed with holidays on special occasions like Dasara, etc. However, citizens' groups have criticised the KSRTC for adopting a myopic approach and faulted it for the failure to plan things with a long-term perspective. It was accused of shifting traffic density from one part of the city to another without really addressing it. Meanwhile, the Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) has asked the citizens to register their protest by writing a letter to the Chief Minister, to postpone the foundation stone laying ceremony till a comprehensive study was conducted by qualified experts. Bhamy V. Shenoy, founding president of the MGP, has written to the Chief Minister stating that citizens' groups were not against a new bus stand, but wanted a comprehensive study based on a sound master plan to decide on the best location.
