Cop scouts for characters to immortalise them in his photographic art

Bengaluru: Asa boy growing up in a small village in Ramanagara, about 50 km from Bengaluru, B S Shivaraju said all he wanted was to become a policeman. When the 10th pass out made it to the Karnataka Police ranks as a constable, he was predictably thrilled. But fate had other plans for him. The hard-won dream became just a stepping stone and the moniker 'Cop Shiva' a perfect pseudonym, as he chased after a new dream: to become an artist. 'I was posted in Bengaluru and like a magnet was drawn to 1 Shanthi Road, an art space like no other, which really opened my eyes to an entirely new world,' said Shivaraju to PTI. A space that was found to nurture creativity and cutting-edge art by artist Suresh Jayaram, a legend in the artist circle of the city, naturally took note of the policeman, who, as Jayaram once introduced him in his art column for a newspaper, 'carries his village in his backpack as he scouts the city for characters and events that fascinate him'. Perhaps, because he himself was a migrant to a big city, clutching on to his 'cultural identity', not willing to let go of it in the swirl of cosmopolitanism, Shivaraju was able to spot subjects in similar predicament. The drama of the dual lives of these migrants became the perfect fodder for Shivaraju's art. -When he came face to face with two such subjects--one who dressed everyday as Tamil film legend MG Ramachandran and another as Gandhi, each had his own compelling reason for pursuing an idiosyncratic routine--he began his photographic art career with a bang. The success of 'I Love MGR' and 'Being Gandhi' '--the shows made it to some of the prestigious spaces for art in India, like Kochi Biennale and Serendipity Arts Festival -- was enough for Shivaraju to continue his documentation. 'It was becoming increasingly difficult to squeeze in my artistic pursuits, considering being a cop is equally demanding,' added Shivaraju. His mother, who single handedly brought him and his sisters up, by doing chores for daily wages in fields, was apprehensive when he decided to quit his job, he said. 'But she stood by me nevertheless and we are all happier now for the choices we made. I bought her a house in Ramanagara with a garden. More importantly, I get to sleep solid eight hours every day. This was impossible when I was a cop--I was so sleep deprived then,' said Shivaraju. Harvard University's Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute Fellow in 2023.

Recognising Mysuru's global reputation as a hub for yoga, the ADC stated that around 15,000 yoga practitioners are expected to participate. The event will be held per govt protocols. Participants have been instructed to wear T-shirts and track pants and to bring their yoga mats. A rehearsal session will be conducted on June 15 for those interested in a preparatory run. 24 couples tie the knot at free mass wedding in Nanjangud

Mysuru: As many as 24 couples tied the knot at a free mass wedding at Srikanteshwara Temple in Nanjangud here on Thursday. The mass wedding was part of the Mangalya Bhagya scheme — an initiative by the Karnataka govt promoting simple weddings for economically disadvantaged families. P Shivaraju, additional deputy commissioner (ADC), who presided over the mass wedding, emphasised the importance of financial prudence during life's milestones. "There is no need to take loans for weddings. Simple ceremonies can set an example for others and prevent families from falling into debt," he said. Launched in 2020, Mangalya Bhagya is a flagship programme organised by the district administration and the department of Hindu religious institutions and charitable endowments. It aims to support poor and middle-income families by covering wedding expenses, ensuring that financial constraints don't stand in the way of a new beginning, the ADC said. Shivaraju expressed optimism about the growing impact of the initiative, stating, "This year, 24 couples are beginning a new chapter without the burden of debt. We hope to see that number grow to at least 100 in the coming year." Srikantha, president of the Nanjangud City Municipal Council, commended the programme as a "thoughtful and practical approach" to reducing unnecessary expenditure and supporting community welfare. "Such events bring dignity and convenience to families who might otherwise struggle to afford wedding costs," he added. The ceremony was also attended by tahsildar Shivakumar Kasanur and Jagadeesh Kumar from Srikanteshwara Temple.

Mangalya Bhagya: 22 couples enter wedlock in Nanjangud

Additional Deputy Commissioner P. Shivaraju on Thursday emphasised that people should not take loans for marriages but should opt for simple weddings to set an example for others. He was speaking at Mangalya Bhagya, a free mass wedding programme organised on the premises of Srikanteshwara temple in Nanjangud. The event was organised by the district administration, hindu religious institutions, and the Endowment Department. Dr. Shivaraju said the purpose of this initiative is to prevent poor and middle-class families from falling into financial hardship due to extravagant wedding expenses. Launched in 2020, Mangalya Bhagya is an ambitious scheme of the State government. 'No one should take loans for lavish weddings and then struggle to repay them. Instead, opt for a simple wedding so that families can save money and use it for other essential needs,' he said. This year, 24 couples were married through the mass wedding. Mr. Shivaraj expressed hope that at least 100 couples would participate in the event next year. Nanjangud Municipality president Srikanta praised the Endowment Department for organising such a meaningful programme. 'This helps avoid unnecessary expenses and provides an opportunity for the underprivileged to get married free of cost. Hence, more such mass wedding programmes should be encouraged.' Tahsildar Shivakumar Kasanur, Jagdish Kumar from the Srikanteshwara Temple, and other officials were present.
